Blackmagic Design CINEURSANEVFP overview

  • 1Description

The Blackmagic URSA Viewfinder is designed specifically for use with the URSA and URSA mini digital film cameras. It features a high-resolution 1920 x 1080 color OLED display, precision glass optics, and an adjustable diopter to fine tune to your vision. It also has a built-in digital focus chart to help when focusing on your subjects. To boost the longevity of the OLED screen, the viewfinder uses a built-in sensor that only turns the screen on when you're looking through it. It screws directly onto the top of your URSA camera and is adjustable, so it can be used with the left or right eye.

Note: Blackmagic URSA Mini Shoulder kit is required for mounting the URSA Viewfinder on URSA Mini, URSA Mini Pro, or URSA Broadcast.

    Blackmagic Design CINEURSANEVFP reviews

URSA Viewfinder is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth it for Mini Ursa, needs firmer update I tried my smallhd and sidewinder, but this is just so much easier and better. Great ergonomics, and I can leave it on and fit it into the case. Resolution is fabulous, lateral adjustment is great and leaves plenty of room for a follow focus. One complaint is the ir sensor will turn the display off during filming if is cool or windy, my hope is black magic corrects in firmware update, there is no reason to save heat or energy while recording. All in all a must if you plan to shoot from the shoulder.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The best view in the house...when its on This viewfinder is one really one of a kind. As an URSA 4k owner I found it very appealing to buy a sturdy, awesome 1920x1080 resolution, specifically built viewfinder for the URSA and URSA mini series cameras. The only problem I have with the URSA viewfinder is that it likes to randomly kick into sleep mode. There might be a setting for that but just haven't found one yet...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Viewfinder. This is seriously one of the best viewfinders in the camera business. It's easily as good as, if not better than Zacuto's Gratical and even Arri's. I use it on an URSA Mini 4.6k and it absolutely rocks - it's a much have accessory for that camera. However, I wish the design was a bit more versatile for use with other cameras, although Wooden Camera and other 3rd party companies are making adapter kits for it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great viewfinder, does not mount directly to URSA Mini Blackmagic Design has made the decision to not sell their URSA Broadcast accessories with the necessary components to attach the viewfinder. The Viewfinder only includes a 3/8" fastener which only works if you also have the URSA Mini Handle and lower dovetail. You may alternatively purchase the 1/4"-20 fastener for the EVF separately, but it's not cheap and should be included if this accessory is intended for use with the URSA Mini.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good except... This is a great viewfinder. Very sharp, easy to use and has a lot of options. Everything you need in a viewfinder except for its positioning. It needs to have greater adjustability in positioning. When you have a camera on your shoulder, you need to be able to adjust the viewfinder in a position that is just right for the operator. This is something you can't do with this viewfinder. It's not bad mind you, it's just not ideal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have for URSA and URSA Mini cameras Hands down, this is the EVF you want if you have an URSA or URSA Mini. The mount allow could be reason enough: solid. Inside, the 1080 OLED means you don't see a single pixel and there is now delay between what the camera sees and what you're seeing in the viewfinder.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A terrific design with some caveats This is a really good first effort for the URSA camera. The construction is all-pro super-durable. The screen looks great! In use, however, the design falls a tad short of a professional viewfinder. The aperture of the eyepiece lens is significantly smaller than one found in a pro piece, so one must press one's eye firmly into the opening in order to see corner-to-corner. After a long day, this becomes fatiguing. With a wider aperture, one can see the whole screen when one's eye is a half-inch away or farther, making quick checks much easier. I also don't understand why the screen was designed with fragile components that will wear out if regularly left on during an entire shoot. Despite the fact that OLED can look fantastic, I think long-lived practicality is more important. There's a sensor to turn the eyepiece off when my face is away, but it also goes off in the middle of a shot, which is quite startling (BM has been responsive in trying to mitigate this tendency). One can override the sensor, but BM warns this will shorten the life of the viewfinder. All this makes the unit seem a little finicky. After all, framing, exposure, and focus is what the eyepiece is about...and we have the flip out screen for more critical evaluations of the picture.Lastly, the rubber eyecup is poorly designed and falls off easily. A replacement costs $25 and I've gone though three cups in one year. I've worked in news and EFP for decades and never lost a cup before using this camera. Despite these growing-pain observations, I suspect this viewfinder is much more convenient for shoulder-shooters than one cobbled together with 15mm tinker toys.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Ursa Mini must I've purchased the viewfinder just because needed more accurate focusing and better exposure judgement on bright sunlight, but I found it was an ideal complement for any situation. I can hace different setups on the viewfinder, the camera screen and also the Video Assist, since Blackmagic Ursa Mini firmware allow you to decide to include luts, peaking, framing and so on for each individual SDI output and monitor, so it's fabulous. Super sharp, super accurate, not having any standby problems like others, so the IR sensor seems to work just fine. Positioning it's perfect. Big eyecup, nice and confortable, even wearing glasses. Also adds more stability due to the new point of contact. The only downside is that it is quite big to store and I should get a custom case for it, but I can deal with it.
