Blackmagic Design CINEURSANEVFP Reviews

Blue Screen

I used the viewfinder for couple of productions and now the screen is all blue. Sending back this product since the quality is really bad.

Great image

Great product. Only complaints are the price, and the viewfinder head could be less fluid. Gravity tends to sink the viewfinder down. But it's perfect, especially for sunny days outside.

Great image but quality is flawed

This viewfinder (purchased with the new Ursa Broadcast G2), has a great image and quality optics, along with convenient, programable buttons. The major flaws with it are 1) does not come with proper 1/4-20 lockdown screw necessary to keep the viewfinder in place! Contacting tech support, their only answer is to buy one (not cool after spending over $6,000 on their gear)! 2) adjustment screw to lock sliding position does not work - no matter how tight you can still move the eyepiece 3) rotation tension screw also does not work, leaving the eyepiece to tilt down on its own. The electronics, optics, and image quality is absolutely great - but the housing is cheap and may not hold up - very disappointing.

Not good for sports production or run and gun ENG work

Been using this viewfinder on a package sports production and can't stand it. It has nowhere near the ease of use of competitors Sony, Panasonic, Ikegami, etc. Eyepiece will not slide over to give the user the proper level of comfort as it only slides forward and backward. The picture slit is incredibly small. You absolutely have to use the focus assist as the eyepiece does not offer a setting to increase the peaking, or at least we have yet to find it. The eyepiece goes black constantly. When we have new ops in and out we spend half a basketball game looking to try and shut off this function. It is the dumbest feature I've ever encountered on an eyepiece. The diopter is lame and oh forget about a shotgun mic mount like most manufacturers offer. Instead we're gaff taping one to the handle. To me this budget viewfinder is barely worth $100, completely overpriced at $1500. Can't understand the glowing reviews on here quite frankly. There has never been a piece of equipment I've ever felt compelled to write a review about, but this one takes the cake its so bad.

Excellent viewfinder

I like how robust this viewfinder is and how seamlessly it attaches to an Ursa Mini camera. It's imagery is also excellent and is easy to get frames into focus.

Adds Precision to Viewfinder decisions

This is indeed an excellent viewfinder. I purchased a modification kit that allows me to use this viewfinder on my BMD URSA Mono Pro 4.6K with a top cheese plate & NATO handle from a third party vendor. I've read that approach has been taken to use this viewfinder with RED cameras & others. Of course, my warranty is voided, but I can still update the viewfinder.

Really Good

Would have given this five stars a few years ago, but it seems like this should be at least a few hundred dollars less in 2022. Great solution for the Ursa though. Good optics, mounting system and function buttons. I wish the function buttons were silent though... they clicky.

question

Has anyone used the URSA viewfinder and the Zacuto Gratical X? Which is better?
Asked by: Robert
From what we are hearing, the URSA viewfinder is excellent and works perfectly with the URSA cameras. The Gratical X is exactly the same as the Gratical HD only does not have the same software. Therefore the X has the same great image as the HD thus making it a world class viewfinder. The Graticals have the advantage in that they can be used with any camera while the URSA viewfinder really is just for the URSA's.

What are third party top handle options that can be used with the URSA viewfinder?
Asked by: Yoram
You most third party top handles that mount via single 1/4"-20 would work with the Blackmagic Design URSA Viewfinder and your URSA. The Wooden Camera Mini Top Handle for Canon C70 (BH #WO282700) for instance would work well.

Will this work on the Black Magic Production Camera?
Asked by: Rankinstein
The URSA Viewfinder is designed to work with the URSA line of cameras. The SDI output of the Production Camera will work with the URSA Viewfinder, however you'll need to power the Viewfinder separately and will have to rig something up to mount it.

question

Does it work with the blackmagic cinema camera 2.5k? I read somewhere that it only accepts 1080 60p signals...
Asked by: Mateo C.
The URSA manual states the HD-SDI connection used for the Viewfinder is 1080 HD. There is no stipulation of 60p that I see. I wonder if this would be appropriate for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5. The Viewfinder only comes into it's own by being able to use the embedded information in the HD-SDI signal for the various displays. Hopefully, someone will report what they find out in using this.
