Fujifilm 16mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

Fast and wide, the XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR Lens is a 24mm equivalent wide-angle lens designed specifically for Fujifilm X-mount mirrorless cameras. Two aspherical and two extra-low dispersion elements are incorporated within the lens design to minimize chromatic, spherical, and axial aberrations as well as distortions for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination. A Nano-GI coating has also been applied to alter the refractive index between elements and suppress flare and ghosting. Conventionally thought of as an ideal lens for street, travel, and landscape photography, this wide prime also features a minimum working distance of less than 6" for photographing close-up subjects.

Complementing the optical assets, the lens also features a weather-resistant design with nine different seals in eight different areas to prevent moisture and dust from entering the lens, as well as enabling its use in temperatures as low as 14°F. A quick and smooth autofocus motor helps to deftly acquire focus in as little as 0.11 sec., and manual focusing use is benefitted by the inclusion of a depth of field scale for presetting focus.

Wide-angle 16mm prime lens provides a 24mm equivalent focal length when used with Fujifilm X-series mirrorless digital cameras.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also aids in selective focus control.
Two aspherical elements control spherical aberrations and distortions and two extra-low dispersion elements help to reduce lateral and axial aberrations. The combination of the two designs minimizes overall distortion and maintains edge-to-edge illumination and sharpness.
A Nano-GI (Gradient Index) coating has been applied to alter the refractive index between the glass and air in order to better suppress lens flare and ghosting for diagonal incident light.
An HT-EBC coating has been applied the entire surface of each element to for controlling ghosting and flare for greater image clarity.
A weather-resistant design includes nine different seals in eight areas to prevent dust and moisture from entering the lens, and also permits working in temperatures as low as 14°F.
A quick and quiet autofocus motor pairs with a two group floating focus system to achieve precise focus in as little as 0.11 sec.
Contrasting the wide field of view afforded by the lens, a minimum working distance of less than 6" is ideal for photographing close-up subjects.
Nine rounded diaphragm blades contribute to a pleasing out-of-focus quality to benefit the use of shallow depth of field techniques.
Depth of field scale benefits working with manual focus and presetting your focus position.

    Fujifilm 16mm f/1.4 reviews

    XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR Lens is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 132.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tremendous Wide Angle Lens I purchased the Fujifilm 16mm f/1.4 R WR lens to replace the 18mm f/2, which I was not thrilled with. The 16mm f/1.4 is much larger and heavier than the 18mm. In fact, it is the largest Fujifilm lens that I own, but what a tremendous lens. The image quality and bokeh that this lens produces is absolutely incredible. It focuses so close that it can also be used as a macro lens. It may very well be the best prime lens that Fujifilm has produced, and I have owned most of them. I also purchased the Fujifilm LH-XF16 Lens Hood. While the hood is overpriced, it does a great job of protecting the front element in crowds, and makes the 16mm f/1.4 the sexiest lens I own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wide, Fast, and Sharp This is a beautiful lens, free of the distortions typical of wider lenses, it's 84 field-of-view is rich, colorful, high-contrast goodness. The maximum aperture of 1.4 allows for astonishingly shallow depth of field, in spite of the wide angle of view. It's a superb general-purpose lens, most at home in limited spaces: automobile, museum, backyard, etc. It would also be an outstanding landscape lens. I've read a number of review complaining about the lens's size and weight, but I don't find it to be large or heavy. I wish it were a 62mm filter thread like the 23mm f/1.4 and the 56mm f/1.2. Excellent build quality, very satisfying fit and finish. Very glad I purchased this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent This is my fifth Fugi XF prime, I also own the 14mm f/2.8 on the wide side. I mostly wanted this lens for street photography, both during the day and of course at night with the fast f/1.4 aperture. I shoot close and found the 23mm f/1.4 a great street lens, but a bit too long for my up close in-your-face style. The 14mm was a bit too wide and the 16mm is just right for my style of shooting. I also carry the X100S, so that covers the 35mm equivalent should I choose to use it. I fully agree with other comments about he fine build and quality of this lens....it is beautiful. I nearly bought this lens in Bangkok a day before B&H announced the Fugi promotion....saved myself $300!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp, Fast, and wide Purchased this lens to complete my prime kit which also the 35 f/1.4 and 56 f/1.2. I went back and forth between this and the 10-24 but in the end I went for the prime because of the 1.4 (vs. 4) and the ability for this thing to be sharp even wide open. The results? I love my 35 to death but it is near impossible to get this thing off the camera. Stop it down just a bit and it's razor sharp to infinity. Bokeh from a wide angle? No problem. Landscapes and seascapes? Perfect field of view and DOF. I've even shot some portraits with this lens. Amazing. The 10-24 might be more versatile but if you're looking for a prime wide-angle in the Fuji system this is the one to get IMHO.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best 24mm (equivalent) lenses I've owned I've used a few 24mm equivalent lenses before, and this one really stands out to me. The 24mm perspective just offers a great field of view without obvious distortion. This lens is sharp, can stand a beating, and is fully weather-sealed. I've been in downpours for hours where I'm literally drying the lens with a towel and it has held up beyond my expectations. This is my go to landscape lens for the X-Series. The only complaint that I have with the lens, is the aperture ring could be a bit more firm to prevent accidentally shifting into another aperture value, but that's about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another High Quality Lens From Fuji I do a lot of low-light photography in small venues, such as pubs, restaurants, and even a small recording studio. Although I have several other fast fuji primes (23/1.4, 35/1.4, and the 56/1.2) I sometimes need additional field of view that the 16/1.4 provides. (approx 36 ft when subject is 20ft distant). This is another high quality lens from Fuji and I haven't been disappointed. I usually shoot wide open and the images are sharp despite the 1.4 aperture. The hyperfocal is also short, which provides additional flexibility for manual focusing and getting depth of field to infinity (at f2 hyperfocal is approx 21 ft). Another high quality lens to consider if you need a fast/wide lens for the Fuji x-system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lens I've ever owned ... This is a beautiful lens for the fujifilm x-series. I'm using it on the x-t1, with the square lens hood (lh-xf16, much more stylish than the included petal-shaped hood) and it's a great looking set-up. I also have the gariz brown leather half case which adds to the size of the camera body and helps balance it out, as this lens is on the larger side. Performance is great, the manual focusing clutch is perfect. The wide-angle is a great perspective, and the images I've taken with it stand apart. It definitely has the aesthetic appeal and solid construction we've all come to expect from fujifilm. I highly recommend this lens for other x-t1 users. You will not regret it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must Have I have the XF 56mm f/1.2 and the XF 23mm f/1.4. Which are both very very nice in their own right, but this is just better. This lens is unforgettable. I can't think of anything bad. The performance is stunning, the manual clutch is awesome, it looks absolutely gorgeous with the LH-XF16 lens hood, and I really like the perspective. Since I got the lens it hasn't come off my X-T1. I find myself coming up with excuses to go out and take pictures, because of this lens. Money well spent.
