  • 3Direct Playback and Viewing
  • 4Simple Copy and Back-Up
  • 5Versatile Control
  • 6Interface

Sony's PMW-PZ1 4K SxS Memory Player makes playing back 4K footage as easy as inserting your SxS card and pressing play. It features a single SxS card slot, HDMI output, 4 x 3G/HD-SDI outputs, analog audio output, and a 3.5-inch LCD. This combination enables the seamless playback, copying, and monitoring of 4K and HD video across a diverse range of applications not only for video production but also for development of 4K equipment and 4K video walls at events, exhibitions, museums, and other venues.

The player supports XAVC Intra and XAVC Long at frame rates up to 59.94p, with planned future updates to expand the formats the unit supports. You can connect an optional USB drive and copy directly from an SxS card to the USB, choosing the level of data verification you wish. The built-in 3.5" LCD monitor lets you watch playback without requiring any additional hardware. The VTR-style buttons allow you to control playback without engaging a menu system.

Multi-Format
The PMW-PZ1 supports multi-format playback capability for 4K and HD. It can playback a variety of formats including XAVC Intra, XAVC Long, with further format support planned. It also supports playback of material recorded at a variety of frame rates including 4K at 59.94p, 50p, 29.97p, 25p, and 23.98p
Direct Playback and Viewing
You can playback footage from SxS memory cards or from an external USB storage device (real time playback from external drives not guaranteed). Please use appropriate media depending on bit rate of the data. (Sony recommends SSD or RAID-type HDD)
Simple Copy and Back-Up
The USB interface is designed for connection to an external USB storage device. This enables users to copy data in SxS media directly to external storage without the need for other devices. The PMW-PZ1 creates a copy log (csv format) in the external USB storage device, which helps users to easily check the file names of copied files. For greater accuracy in the copy process, users can activate a verify function before copying to avoid any copy errors.
Versatile Control
You can control the PMW-PZ1 directly from the front panel, which features a high-quality, 3.5-inch, color, LCD front screen. Control is also possible with USB mouse through the USB interface.
Interface
The PMW-PZ1 incorporates a host of versatile input and output interfaces, including a HDMI port and four 3G/HD-SDI outputs. The HDMI port allows you to connect to professional monitors and projectors, or even consumer TVs. Independent analog audio output are built into the unit, for independent monitoring or connection to speakers. Two USB interfaces, one for connection to external USB storage and the other to a mouse device for the user to control the PMW-PZ1, provide access and control over an optional external drive.

Sony PMW-PZ1 Reviews

not as good as advertised

Bad instructions, does no intergrate well with other equipment such as a Black Magic Monitor or a Sony HDV 1080i DV Cam. Sony SxS-1 memory cards are almost impossible to find same goes for aftermarket card readers. Think I will chalk this up to a bad buy, set it on the shelf and give Panasonic a try.

Highly NOT RECOMMENDED

Nice field deck for SxS transmission via SDI

This unit arrived with the original v1.0 firmware and needed to be immediately updated v1.1 in order to playback many of the XAVC 1080 formats. It was a major feat to hunt down the new firmware version on the web. Additionally, the current firmware will not playback MPEG 720/60p that can be recorded in the PMW F5/55. Some major clients like ESPN, Fox and ABC still want delivery via SDI in 720p. Also, in the copy function needs a way to rename the root files with an alpha numeric menu function not just a random number generation. Its not as easy as plugging in a card and hitting play. There is some menu levels to go thru before the unit will play clips.

question

I have Sony FS5. May I use SxS to SDXC adapter to play footage on this device?
Asked by: Alexander
We are unable to test so it is our opinion that since the PMW-PZ1 can read the formats that you can record on the SDXC card, it should work. However, possible performance issues may occur.

Yes. It can playback formats native to Sony PMW-F5/55 cameras in MPEG1080i/XAVC1080p/MPEG 720p as well as 4K. Sony has just released a firmware upgrade to v1.2 to allow MPEG 720p playback.
