  • 1Description

The Aputure DEC Wireless Focus & Aperture Controller Adapter for EF and EF-S-Mount Lenses to E-Mount Cameras is a wireless remote adapter controller that allows you to mount your EF/EF-S mount lens on your E-mount camera and control your lens directly, allowing you to smoothly control the focus and iris setting of your lens without relying on your camera's electronics. OLED windows on the adapter and the remote hand grip display lens information.

The hand grip and adapter communicate using 2.4 GHz FSK radio signal, which allows wireless communication up to 328' away. You can manually change focus or set an A and B focus position and control the speed of the focus change. The unit allows you to quickly open the iris to set your focus and then return the iris to your shooting stop. The entire unit comes in a small hard carry case.

    Aputure DEC-E reviews

DEC Wireless Focus & Aperture Controller Lens Adapter for EF and EF-S-Mount Lenses to E-Mount Cameras is rated 2.9 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple and Intuitive This is the prefect lightweight and budget-friendly option for pulling focus on smaller gimbal and stabilizer rigs. PROS: -Ultra smooth focus motion -Lightweight -Fast setup -Does EXACTLY what it it supposed to do! -Decent battery life CONS: -NOT a smart adapter (you cannot adjust aperture from camera controls, even if off) -form factor can be tricky with different mounting plates (the kit DOES come with a height offset piece, but it isn't too sturdy and even less so as the lens gets heavier)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't work. Aputure doesn't respond to questions I've bought 4 lights from Aputure. They're fantastic! So despite the reviews, I bought the DEC wireless focus. I attached it to a lens that Aputure lists as being supported. It would adjust the iris, but not the focus. I tried a several different lenses, but none of them worked. So I updated the firmware (there are two versions, and I was careful to download the correct one). Now the DEC won't even turn on. I filled out the customer service form on Aputure's website a week ago and haven't heard back. I'm super-disappointed by the horrible product and non-existent support from a company that I had previously been recommending to everyone. Save yourself the wasted money and hassle and avoid this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Amazing idea. Very disappointed. The first one I bought did not power up. The second one stopped working the first day within an hour. Would not charge after initial full charge. When it was functioning the hard stops would not program. The lanc cable for the gh4 stopped the focus from working (can't use the record button without the lanc). All around glitchy.I would wait for the dec pro supposedly releasing soon. Hope the kinks get worked out. I was very excited for this item until it completely let me down twice.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not reliable enough for me to use. To be fair, i received an opened box item. The power on the device was left ON. The battery was complete drained. Would not charge unless i left teh device on ON position and it took 9 hours to charge. Once charged, I used it the next day. It worked, did exactly what was advertised... except I noticed that the focus would be mis-calibrated if I manually focus. That means if I touch the focus ring at all on my canon lens, the wireless focus would forget the calibrations and focus does not work. To top that off, the battery level dropped down to 1 bar after about an hour of use. Shortly after (less than 10 mins) it died. This time it died, I cannot charge it no matter what. It was basically just a lens adapter at that point; A lens adapter that cannot change aperature, since it doesnt work.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad, but could use some work First of all the A/B focus points work great. Just set the first focus point and hit the A button. Then set the second point and hit B. It's intuitive, fast and easy. For more run and gun type stuff, however, it's not quite that great. The focus rocker feels more like two speeds. WAY too slow and WAY too fast. They need to address this with a firmware update to give more of a smooth roll on and roll off. Another issue is if you want to go back to pull focus on the lens and then go back to the DEC it will often not be synchronized and will not work correctly. So, then you have to do a power cycle. I did just see that there might be a firmware update but it looks way more difficult than anything else I've seen. You have to have a PC and download drivers to the computer. I will try to update and see if it's any better.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works well but form factor an issue I purchased this for my GH4 Helix Jr gimbal set-up (first time with the GH4 for me) and a friend who already has a GH4 with Canon glass suggested it might be a better option than the Metabones as their build quality seems questionable. What's good: I am using it with my Canon 14mm on the GH4 and the DEC works well. On the Helix I'm finding that I don't really need to use the DEC controller on the fly as I set up exposure and maintain that throughout the shot. I usually have focus throughout the move as well. The good thing about the controller is that it is simple to use and so if I need to I can get someone to operate it while looking at the monitor with me as I fly the Helix. The major problem: This is a biggie for me in that the battery part of the DEC sits below the normal mount point of the camera which means you need to offset the mount with a little adapter that is completely hopeless. It is unusable with the helix as it allows the camera to twist and so throws out the balance of the camera. This means that you have to sit your camera on the very end of your tripod mount which may not always suit your set-up. The design of the Helix is very good and allows for good counterbalancing but I personally would have prefered to keep the centre of balance closer to the middle by mounting the GH4 back from where I have had to. It's not a deal breaker for me, and the price is very good, but you should be aware of this before you buy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from good product, but with some flaws I have used the DEC for my GH4 camera (MFT mount), and decided to buy another for my FS5 (E mount). This is an affordable option for controlling aperture, focus and enabling/disabling recording. Overall, it works as expected, but has a few drawbacks: 1. Frequently looses wifi connection between the remote control and main unit, requiring a reboot to reconnect. 2. The lower mounting bit extends below cameras. Not a problem on the FS5, but on the GH4 and other DSLR cameras, you will need to deal with the funky mounting options. 3. The covering on the handgrip is very slippery. I fixed mine by adding tennis racket tape around it. Problem solved. 4. Battery life is very short. I use an external battery power, as I can't rely on the internal batteries for either the DEC or the remote.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for some things, not everything! I bought this to use with my Sony A7sII and Canon EF lenses. It's a very cool product and definitely has its uses. Mostly I do events and weddings. I feel that the DEC is a cool tool to have in your bag, but I will probably also buy another regular lens adapter. The biggest bummer of it is that the battery on the bottom of the adapter sticks out pretty far, and while they give you a spacer to mount your camera to a tripod, it's less than ideal. It would have been much better to put a 1/4-20 hole on the bottom of the adapter. I may buy a battery grip in the future just to give me a better spacer to mount the camera to a tripod with. The focusing works, even with my Tamron lenses. It's not my favorite way to focus though. There's not a lot of precision in the thumb dial. The biggest plus of this system is the A and B points, where you can pre-set short and long focus points and easily move between them. This is terrific, and frankly is probably worth the price to me. I love to rack focus from one object to another, especially for b-roll at weddings. I imagine it will be terrific in film work also, though I have yet to try it out in that capacity. I also look forward to using it on my 3-axis gimbal. If I could suggest improvements for future versions of this product, I would love if the adapter could be rotated so that the battery is on the side or the top. I think it'd be nice to have a smart version of this adapter that could pass information from the camera to the lens. This would be helpful to make quick adjustments when you don't have the remote handy. As far as focusing goes, a focus wheel like other wireless follow focus systems would be ideal. Overall, I do not suggest that this be your only way to adapt lenses if you do a lot of run-and-gun shooting. But if you have the cash, it's a really fun and interesting tool to help you tell your story.
