Aputure HR672 overview

  • 1Description

The most powerful light in the series, the Amaran HR672S Daylight LED Spot Light from Aputure is an LED panel that uses 672 95+ rated LEDs to render colors with optimal precision and accuracy. The light's 5500K color temperature means that you can easily match it with other daylight sources like HMIs and cool white fluorescents, as well balance the unit with ambient daylight conditions. An orange conversion (3200-5500K) filter is supplied to match tungsten lights or for creative late day lighting effects.

Among the R672S's advanced features is wireless control of the light's functions and light intensity from up to 328' away thanks to 2.4 GHz FSK technology. This is an especially valuable tool for adjusting lights hung overhead or on large sets or locations. It's also great for solo shooters and multi-light setups. The included remote control has 4 discrete channels to defeat interference and 3 groups for multiple setups. The HR672S produces a spot 25-degree beam angle with an impressive brightness of 18,800 lux at a distance of 1.6, and features a stepless rear dimming dial for adjusting light output from 0 to 100%. The light panel can be powered by the included multi-voltage AC adapter or the included Sony-type batteries using the dual rear battery slots. Four LED indicator lights on the back of the unit display the remaining battery life.

The 9.37 x 7.48 panel is only 1.26" thick and generates little heat, allowing it to squeeze into places where other lights, especially incandescents, just can't go. The Amaran HR672S ships with the previously mentioned multi-voltage AC adapter, 5/8" tilting mount for stand mounting, a 5/8" spigot with 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threads, an orange CTO conversion filter and a diffusion filter to soften the light's output.

CRI 95+ for Accurate, Pure Light
The color-rendering index (CRI) is a quantitative measure of the ability of a light source to reproduce the colors of various objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal or natural light source. With a CRI of 95+, the HR672S ensures natural and lifelike rendering that's ideal for color-critical applications such as fashion, documentary, short films or art and textile evaluation
Impressive Output
The HR672S emits 4636.8 lumens of light - about equal to a traditional 400W incandescent light and it's flicker-free no matter at any shutter speed or FPS rate
Thin but Durable Design
The HR672S has 628 LED lamps packed into a compact design that is slightly larger than the original iPad. It's an LED light that doesn't sacrifice power for portability
328' Wireless Range
Using 2.4GHz FSK technologies, you can easily the HR672S's adjust brightness with the included wireless remote. Multiple channels and groups also ensure that several different lights can be controlled without interference from up to 328' away
Diffusion Filter
The HR672S comes a white diffusing filter to soften the light's output
Advanced Dual Power System
Two methods can be used to power the HR672S: an AC adapter or Lithium-ion batteries. Batteries can be recharged while the HR672S is being powered by an AC adapter
Slim Profile
The HR672S is only 1.26" thick - significantly thinner than many competitive LED units

    Aputure HR672 reviews

Amaran HR672S Daylight LED Spot Light is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beyond a Good Bargain Purchased this based on a review from Film Riot. This spot is AWESOME! Light weight, extremely portable; it is worth every penny! Not only will it illuminate a dark room, the dimmer expands its versitility making it a great fill light. Best feature is that if plugged in, it charges while you are using it! So if I am doing a fixed shot, I'll do a couple of takes with the light mounted on a C stand, then unplug it & move the stand anywhere in seconds for an alternate angle or even have a PA hold it in a tracking shot. I see two more of these in my near future!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from it's bright It's a great little light. Very bright, good color, lasts a long time and doesn't get hot. You will most likely have to diffuse it when using it as a key light indoors. This presents a problem, the light doesn't have anything that you can attach a piece of diffusion gel to it. I've been using my fold out diffusion/reflector, but have to put that on a separate light stand. You can buy a softbox for it, but I've read reviews that say the softbox cuts off the airflow and overheats the light. Other than that the light is great and I've been using it a lot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from High Value, Potential for Concern Down the Road Bought two of these and really love the light output. I bounced one off a reflector as a soft key in the shade (single, MCU) and it works. I've read that they're equivalent to 400W tungstens but they're not quite that bright IMO. Maybe 250W. Still, two of them can light an interview subject quite well and they're infinitely portable. Also the color temp is not 5600k, it's closer to 5000k. My issue is that both of my lights have experienced slight flicker when maxed to 100% brightness. Usually this occurs when the light is off axis, tilted up or down. When mostly perpendicular to the floor they are fine. I contacted Aputure about this and they suggested I RMA'd the lights thru B&H, which I'll do as soon as I'm back Stateside.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great power for the $$ Use this to fill interview subjects in full sunlight. Great product. Lots of power and seems sturdy enough. Colour seems very good. Battery mounts are fiddly and being at the top of the unit, can make it a bit top heavy. Case zippers did not last long. Would like case to hold light with batteries attached. Run time is very reasonable with included batteries, we will see how well their charge capacity lasts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent light and a great buy This is the brightest LED light I've owned, with the most accurate color I've seen from this technology yet. This spot version can easily light small, close subjects (as in tabletop product work) to over 500 footcandles, but is equally usable as a key or (with added diffusion) fill light in video interview situations. It is extremely light and compact. It mounts easily on a lightweight stand, but the size, shape and weight make it possible to put it in many positions, even with improvised supports, where a hot, corded light could never go. At the price, it is an amazing deal with the two batteries included. Although I will probably use AC most of the time, the option to go cordless is a good bonus. I ran down the batteries to test it and at full intensity, it worked for about 90 minutes. In practice, it is likely you'd have it dimmed down some and could get even more time. The long cord on the AC adapter is a plus. It will reach the floor even with the light on a high stand, so I don't have to clamp or tape the power supply box to the stand. The remote control works well. I only have one light and can't test the multiple channel features yet. Did I mention that this thing is tiny? I have three other LED fixtures that do not produce as much light but are at least three times the volume and five times the weight of this one. It does get fairly warm for an LED light -- but not enough to pose a hazard to personnel or furniture. It cools down rapidly when turned off. The all-plastic construction is lightweight and compact, but it probably won't hold up to too much abuse. The battery indicator, a four-segment LED on the back, could be a lot more useful. It just flashes while charging, but doesn't indicate the progress of the charge. And while running the light, it is very pessimistic, indicating empty when about half the battery lifetime still remains. I was amused to find three spare LEDs in the package. It's a thoughtful touch, but I probably wouldn't even be able to measure the difference if three out of 672 lamps were to fail. Having reviewed this light, I am planning to put together a full compact interview kit out of the Aputure lights. A Lightstorm LS1S, this HR672S and an HR672W flood, with three compact stands, would be a killer setup for a one man band video shooter like me. This light is an incredible bargain and an excellent performer.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Returning it I was extremely disappointed with this monitor. I tried to calibrate it to work with my GH4 and the darks were way too dark, even with brightness set to 100%. Yet I give it two stars as I want to be fair, I know I shoudn't have expected much more for that price range. Just don't expect accurate color, brightness and contrast. This is a good monitor if you only need to frame your picture and need a bigger histogram or the extra tools.
