Aputure AL-528 overview

  • 1Description

The on or off-camera Amaran AL-528S Daylight LED Spot Light from Aputure is a daylight-balanced (5500K) LED light that delivers precise color accuracy thanks to its high CRI 95+ rated LEDs. The light produces a spot 25° beam angle with a brightness of 4,380 lux at a distance of 3.3' and features a stepless rear dimming dial for adjusting light output from 0 to 100%. The AL-528S can be powered by the included AC adapter or optional Sony F/FM/QM-type batteries using the dual rear battery slots. Four LED indicator lights on the back of the unit display the remaining battery life.

The 9.37 x 7.48 panel is only 1.26" thick and generates little heat, allowing it to squeeze into places where other lights, especially incandescents, just can't go. The AL-528S ships with a multi-voltage AC adapter, 5/8" tilting mount for stand mounting, a 5/8" spigot with 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threads, an orange 5500 - 3200K conversion filter, a diffusion filter to soften the light's output, and a carry case with shoulder strap.

Powerful and Compact
The AL-528S has 528 LEDs packed into a compact design that is the same size as the original iPad. It's an LED light that doesn't sacrifice power for portability
High Color-Rendering LEDs
With Amaran's advanced LEDs featuring a color-rendering index of 95+, the AL-528S casts a more radiant, natural light
Color Temperature and Diffusion
The AL-528S comes with two filters: a tungsten filter to change the color temperature from 5500 to 3200K, and a white diffusing filter to soften the light's output
Frictionless Brightness Control
Freely rotate the brightness wheel to adjust the AL-528S intensity. An adjacent LCD screen displays the power of your light by percentage for repeatability and consistency
Slim Profile
The Amaran is only 1.26" thick - significantly thinner than many competitive LED units
Double Power Supply System
The AL-528S can be powered by two ways: AC adapter or 2 Lithium-ion batteries. The two methods of power can also be used simultaneously so you can charge your batteries while using your light. The Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used (Sony F/FM/QM series) and easily sourced. It also features a 4 LED lights to indicate remaining battery power. When the light is almost out of power, the status LEDs blink red
Carrying Case
Included with the AL-528S is a convenient case for your light and all of its accessories, such as filters, lamp bracket, and the AC adapter. The compact design makes it perfect for shooting on the run

    Aputure AL-528 reviews

Amaran AL-528S Daylight LED Spot Light is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from fantastic for single person interviews! While it won't be confused with a 1x1 from Dracast or Litepanels, this LED is insanely bright for the price. The color accuracy is excellent for the price as well. Two things to keep in mind- this light is very hard and they are not lying when they say it's a spot light. The angle of the throw is quite narrow. I use this light diffused with a minus green for single person interviews and it's perfect. I definitely would not use this to light two person interviews though because of how narrow the angle is. There is a 1/4-20 female thread on each side of the light though for connecting multiple lights together, so I may get a second one in the future though because they are so affordable! The plastic housing feels a little light and therefore feels more breakable than the housings on higher end LEDs. The adjustable mount it comes with also feels plastic-y and like it will be stripped after a year of regular use, but we shall see!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 10/10 - Would Buy Again! I literally use this product for every project - photography and video production. Professional, high quality product for such an affordable price. Below is my experiences with this light in photography and video production. PHOTOGRAPHY I use it as a fill while using a portable flash as a key. It sounds unorthodox. But, for the given situation, it pairs great. the color temperature matches perfectly. Also, the high range of light intensity allows me to reach the desired look with precision. The best part is the portability. Ever since I purchased a couple Sony batteries, I have fallen in love with this product. I can easily move around the this LED panel without having to worry about cable management. I have yet to use it for portraits. Can't wait to try it out for that. VIDEO PRODUCTION The first time I used this LED panel for video was when I was recording an interview. Because the interview was taking place in the direct sunlight, the situation for composing a decent shot was quite grim had it not been for this little LED panel that could. We decided to use the sunlight a the rim light by putting the sun to the back of the subject. We positioned the Amaran on the opposite side of the sunlight as a key. We assumed we needed to punch the intensity to 100%. Then we realized that this thing was so powerful, that we brought down to 60%. The position of the Amaran also allowed it to function as a rim for the other side. This broke the subject away from the background and really sold the look as professional. The light was perfect. The shadows on the subject's face had the slowest falloff - it was like butter. Mind you, we set up this shot in 10 minutes and all we used was the sun and the Amaran to pull off a professional look. OVERALL I would highly recommend this LED panel to anyone. If you're just starting out, get it. Skip tungsten and any other old school lighting setups. I have a whole light kit of tungsten lights and only use it if the Amaran can't do it - which is rare. For those professionals, get it. It's a handy, portable light that can complement any professional arsenal.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple, Effective, BRIGHT! The 528S is a great, versatile, and low-profile light that's perfect for lower budget situations. PROS: No flicker at different frame rates Bright, clear light at useable CRI Small, not heavy at all Mounts easily everywhere CONS: A little difficult to add non-native light modifiers (ie- black foil, barn doors, third party diffusion) Build quality seems unlikely to handle high-stress situations OVERALL: Amazing and effective. Just be realistic about what you need it for.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Light High light output for its size. Light weight. It is great for general use, but I wouldn't use it for serious portraits. We use it for a copy stand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great! Great light. I use it mainly for detail shots at weddings. Portraits works great as well especially if you are going for something with a lot of contrast. It's very light weight and easy to use. You can hand hold it or put it on a light stand. The color temperature seems to be pretty accurate as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Punches well above it's weight. But how to use it? I don't know exactly where this fits in a location lighting kit but it would be a wide shot, it does perform as speced very very well. Super lightweight, even flimsy maybe, but Chimera were considered that when introduced so moving on. All that needs to be known now is that the spot is tight and symetrical and long and 4 hours batt runtime with built in bypass charging and good color and good included bag. The 1/4 adapter pin is very poor quality, the stand adapter pan/tilt thing is plastic and I don't even know what to call it other than funtional junk. But any amount of grip kit adapters or still photo ball heads could be used to force that to the trash. So get/make something else premiumim to replace those. This is a light source and a good one. What might not be so easy to get around is how to soft box it, or barn door it, or gel it. Maybe those solutions will come from the after market but be aware leave these running for a while with the vent holes covered and you probably will have problems. A KinoFlo or soft-fastend Lightstorm stlye barn door kit would be ideal and a KinoFlo style grate for the wide version and there you go.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, but not outstanding I just took it out of the box, and already I have some problems- First off, the battery mountings were inoperative out of the box, so I'll be returning this one. I was able to plug it in with the included AC power supply, and found it to be satisfactorily bright. The mounting hardware it comes with is impressively robust, but the construction of the light itself is pretty light weight. Probably not ideal for situations where it's likely to get bounced around a lot. Also, I found the design of the battery releases to be of the El-Cheapo variety: Just a clip spring molded into the battery mount. I found it impossible to free the battery with just my fingers, and had to use a small screwdriver to push the clip down far enough to release the battery. Also, have fun when the spring clip breaks. So- Plusses: compact and light, good and bright for its size. Minusses: lightweight construction, inconvenient design on battery cradles, and possibly poor quality control. You're getting what you pay for here, but if you need a light that's going to be used mostly indoors, it could be a good low-cost option.
