Angler Q400 overview

  • 1Description

When describing the 400Ws Angler Q400 Monolight the operative word is speed. The light is designed so you'll never miss a shot while waiting for it to recycle. Recycling time is a fast 0.4 seconds at full power, flash duration is an impressive 1/5,000 of a second, and continuous shooting speed can reach a rapid-fire 10 frames per second. This strong emphasis on speed makes the Q400 a smart choice for fashion and event shooting, and since it's fast enough to capture almost any movement at its peak, it's ideal for high-speed photography. You can even bring the Astral Extreme on location, powering it from a generator or inverter if there's no AC power available.

Easy might be the next way to describe the Q400. Adjustments are easily made on the light's back panel which incorporates a carry handle. Soft push buttons control the modeling light, ready beep, and optical slave on/off function. The slave allows you set Instant-Fire or Skip Pre-flash modes and trigger the flash head at distances up to 33'. You can also hard wire the Q400 to your camera via the included 1/4" phono sync cord, or easier still, use an optional wireless radio system such as Impact's ControlSync 16 to trigger the flash from up to 150' away and remotely control its power, modeling, and audible alert.

The Q400's power level, which is adjustable in 1/10 stops over a 6-stop range is displayed on an easy-to-read LCD screen. Both power and modeling lamp intensity are adjustable via simple knobs. The 150W modeling light dims when the flash is triggered while a switchable beep indicates full recycling.

A handy feature of the Q400 is the adjustable mounting bracket that allows you to find the center of gravity for better balance when using heavy front accessories such as large softboxes. A built-in receiver can support umbrella shafts up to 8mm and umbrellas up to 7' in diameter. The speedring/reflector mount is Bowens S-Type, giving you a wide range of choices, not only from Angler but from the many manufacturers who have standardized on this mount. Angler includes a reflector that accepts 7" grids.

    Angler Q400 reviews

Q400 Monolight is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Impressive. My New Favorite Strobe. I wasn't sure what to expect when I starting testing and using this strobe, but in a very short time, I grew to love it. It's a top notch performer in every way. Color and output are solid and very consistent. Controls are simple and I much prefer the rotating knob to an Up and a Down button for adjusting power. Slave mode works as you'd expect and the second slave mode, which enables the optical sensor to ignore pre-falsh from Speedlights, etc works great. There is a 'center of gravity' adjustment on the bottom of the light. A great idea but I feel that it could be better implemented by making it more easily adjustable without the need for tools. Since the Q400 uses a standard S-Type Bowens mount, just about every modifier that has a Bowens mount or speed ring should fit. There are some freakish exceptions, but for the most part, the mount is compatible. One of the best and most amazing things about this light is the super fast recycle times all the way up to max power of 400 Watt seconds. Very impressive recycle times and very fast flash durations. No problem stopping and freezing motion. The light is substantial and has some weight to it, so be careful if you're extending it out on a boom. Combined with the on camera transmitter and USB receiver, this is a great light and the makings of a great system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My third one! I upgraded my two light setup with a third Q400. I've been very pleased with all three lights and adding the third has given me additional lighting possibilities. I would like a fourth some day. :-) Note - I haven't owned any other strobes, so I can't compare it to others, but I will say it's nice to finally have more than enough light on my subjects, relative to my original light setup. I mount all my Q400's on Impact Air-Cushioned Light Stands, also purchased from B&H.
