Axler WISP-20M overview

  • 1Description

The WISP-20M from Axler is a handheld motorized gimbal stabilizer designed for use with mirrorless or similarly sized cameras. It utilizes quiet brushless motors to isolate your camera from unwanted hand shake along the yaw (pan), pitch (tilt), and roll axes, allowing you capture smooth, fully stabilized shots with camera and lens combinations weighing up to 1.9 lb.

The gimbal stabilizer offers two distinct operating modes: a Follow Mode that allows the camera to smoothly follow the pan and tilt motion of the unit, and a Lock Mode to keep the camera in a single position, regardless of how the stabilizer is moved. A thumbstick on the back of the handle is used to switch between modes and adjust camera pan and pitch tilt. Additionally, a button on the camera platform activates a Low mode, lettings you invert the stabilizer for easier low-angle shots.

Designed for ease of use, the WISP-20M features a sliding quick release plate for quick camera attachment and balancing. An offset adapter plate is included to fit wider cameras or cameras with an off-center 1/4"-20 socket. Once balanced, the internal gyros automatically stabilize your camera when the device is powered on. The motors are powered using three readily available 18650 rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which provide around two to three hours of continuous operation. Batteries and a micro-USB charging cable are included.

For added versatility, there is a 3/8"-16 threaded socket at the bottom of the handle that allows the stabilizer to be mounted on a tripod, monopod, or jib. A 5V USB port on the handle can be used to charge a smartphone or to power an included compact and flexible LED light, useful when working in dimly light environments.

    Axler WISP-20M reviews

Handheld Gimbal for Mirrorless Cameras is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeded expectations I do a lot of adventure sports videography - sometimes deep in the backcoutry on snowboard or many miles in on trail on mountain bike. I didn't want a big, bulky gimbal for my GH4 as I knew if I got something that size, I'd often leave it behind. This is going to do the trick nicely. It's compact and can fit in my pack well. And, most importantly for anyone considering it, it's a very good stabilizer. I've just been testing it so far (and will update when I have action imagery to show), but it was very easy to set up and the test shots I've gotten have been very smooth with a natural horizon. Seems like a great bang for the buck so far.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Suitable for anything SMALLER than a GH4 or Sony Alpha For a frame of reference, I attempted to use this with a Panasonic GH4 with Panasonic 12-35mm and 7-14mm lenses. Single sentence review: This device is sublime for any compact mirrorless camera or enthusiast compact, but not for SLR-style mirrorless cameras. Pros: 1. Well made with a good case. 2. Delivers on battery life promise 3. Easy to balance 4. Good value, less than competitors (Ikan, Beholder, etc) marketing the exact same device under different branding. Cons: 1. Only works well with compact prime lenses, 2. Walking shots take a lot of skill (your footage, while smooth, will bob up and down quite a bit) 3. Longer lenses that shift the center of gravity will cause the gimbal to wig out if the back of the camera (such as the eyepiece) bumps aft motor (and it will at even minor angles). 4. Attempting to adjust anything (focus, settings, zoom, etc) will cause the gimbal to wig out. 5. The handle motor (ie rotational) is an acquired taste, no matter which mode you have it set to.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from If you want to spend an hour mounting .... This thing is terrible. I have a Panasonic GX85 and a small lens. I took over 2 hours trying to get it to mount correctly. It constantly would drift to the right and get off balance. Returning it ASAP.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great gimbal for travel w/ a compact camera I've traveled around the world with this gimbal using a Sony RX100 M4 for vlogging. It's been fantastic. I've also shot a short film with the Sony A7S + 50mm (B&H #SO5018B). PRO + Compact and easy to wrap and throw in a backpack + Batteries last for a long time (3-4 hrs) + One of my favorite features is that the handle is so wide you can just rest it on any level surface while setting up. First, balance your camera, then you can set it down. It's really important to be able to put your camera down and free up your hands for all sorts of reasons, like dialing in camera settings, resting between shots, putting a new battery in your camera. CON - I had one issue in Singapore where it was extremely humid and the unit listed when doing a long pan with the joystick. The next day I could not recreate the problem. - Need a coin or screwdriver to adjust balance. Overall, I'm a big fan of this stabilizer. The quality of smoothness you get from it looks excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the price! I wasn't disappointed! Although it's tricky to set-up and balance, like every handheld gimbal, the end-result is fantastic. I used my GH4 on this stabilizer and tested many different shots. For example: -Walking, either in lock or follow mode, the shakiness was reduced by 90% and camera shake was barely noticeable. -Power walking was about the same as normal walking, and the shakiness was little to none. -Running (this one amazed me) The reduction of shakiness was about 85%. In many shots, I ran up and down hills. I ran jumping over tree stumps, over curbs, etc. and I was not disappointed. -Walking up and down stairs was also another amazing result. One has to take into account that gimbals like these don't do everything and you can't expect them to deliver you results that those gimbals costing thousands of dollars give. You have to really practice with this gimbal to know its limitations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Using with A6300..Great build quality, would def recommend gives smooth shots, with slight vertical movement as expected with all of these gimbals...just learn the ninja walk and you'll be good :) overall pretty happy with the purchase, i havent been able to run the batteries all day on a project yet so i cannot speak on how long they actually last.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Needs better instructions I purchased this for my Canon Mirrorless and found it to be very difficult to put together and even more difficult to balance. I am still trying to get used to it.....I just wish that there was a better one on the market as I would pay much more to get a product that was easier to assembly, adjust, and use!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very difficult to put together and get adjusted to the camer I haven't actually used it yet but after spending nearly two hours last night trying to get it put together and adjusted to my Canon M5, I am not impressed. The directions, as are most directions, POOR AT BEST. Fortunately I had a friend come over and between the two of us I THINK we have it adjusted properly...this is not easy at best...Hopefully once I get it adjusted and see how it actually works, if it works, I will be in a better position to judge just how good it actually works.....
