Garmin 010-01508-00 overview

  • 1Description

Whether you're actively involved in geocaching or just looking for a portable GPS unit to take with you on a hike into the woods or the urban jungle, the Garmin eTrex 20X GPS Unit is sure to be useful. This easy to use navigation device will indicate your current position and lay digital breadcrumbs showing where you've been. The handheld GPS unit's 2.2" 65K color sunlight-readable screen displays your position in an easy-to-read manner. You can attach this GPS to many different items with a variety of optional mounts.

This unit utilizes both GPS and GLONASS satellites for quicker signal acquisition so you get a fix on your position approximately 20 times faster than GPS alone. The receiver also can interpret Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) signals so you can receive information from terrestrial antennas even when your view of the sky is obstructed. The WAAS system also provides greater position accuracy overall. Adding to the GPS technologies, this device also features HotFix satellite prediction which uses an algorithm to mimic the movement of the Earth. This technology allows the receiver to quickly regain satellite connection after a couple days of non-use, eliminating long initialization times. A worldwide basemap is stored on the unit's internal memory so you will always have an idea of where you are.

The eTrex 20X features built-in paperless geocaching software, so you can transfer your data to your computer with the supplied USB cord or upload it onto the Web. The unit's screen displays key information, including location, terrain, cache difficulty rating, and hints and descriptions of hiding spots. All of this means no more manually entering coordinates and paper printouts for your geocaching hobby. You can store up to 2000 waypoints on the receiver's built-in memory as well as 10,000 points, 200 saved tracks. A microSD card slot lets you load TOPO 24K maps for hiking, BlueChart g2 charts for boating, or City Navigator NT maps data for turn-by-turn routing on roads.

    Garmin 010-01508-00 reviews

eTrex 20X GPS Unit is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from NICE PIECE OF EQUIPMENT This will be used mostly in the Intermountain West. Finding old rendezvous sites, ghost towns, etc. A couple of days ago, it was used to help mark part of a friends mining claim in the Sawtooths. Great info from the satellite page, including coordinates. The documentation is awful, but there are enough youtube videos to get you going. This is a popular item, so lots of videos. For the rest you won't find, an email on the customer service page seems to work pretty good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great GPS Screen is large enough but not too big for battery drain. Use with hunting card, integrates card well. Found interface intuitive. Good price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best GPS unit for the money I have been using eTrex 20s for over 5 years. I bought this one as a replacement for one I lost. I decided when I bought the first one it was the ideal item for performance versus cost, and I still feel that way. The newer eTrex20x has been improved in a few key respects. I still find it a bit slow to settle down when I using it for geocaching, and slow to start up after loading large data files. But it's otherwise accurate and convenient, and I can live with the limitations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for geotagging I use the tracks from my eTrex 20 to geotag images using GPicSync. The Garmin BaseCamp software let's you build 'adventures' which can display your track and even link images to the track making for a great travel show for your friends. One caution is that you need to be sure that your eTrex and camera are time synced if you are travelling across time zones. I set mine to UTC when planning such a trip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great handheld GPS Got this unit to carry hiking to track my route and give me better details of distance direction and elevation change. Downloaded Birdseye so I could get better details of what is in the area of my hikes. Battery life seems to be good. Lots of information on the device. Going to use it on my boat to mark waypoints on large lakes that I don't have maps to. Great piece of equipment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The most convenient gps ever! I like all Garmin products. This new gps has a lot of advantages: colorful screen, maps, easy manual. It is very convenient to hold in my palm and it doesn't take a lot if space in my car. Thank you for the best price and service!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Useless manuals Nice product. I downloaded the full manual. I am glad I didn't print it out as it would have been a waste of paper. You can only use this thing by playing with it. Trial and error. Don't rely on it in the woods, until you master it.
