SmallHD MON-501 overview

  • 1Description

Small HD's 501 HDMI On-Camera Field Monitor Kit includes the SmalHD 501, SmallHD LP-E6-Type Battery and Charger Kit, HDMI cables, acrylic screen protectors, a neoprene sleeve, ball mount, an 8 GB SD card, a cleaning cloth, and a hard-sided storage case. The 501 brings full HD resolution to an on-camera monitor the size of a smartphone. The screen packs 441 pixels per inch, providing a sharp clear image on such a small screen. It features HDMI input, HDMI output, and it takes just 3 seconds to boot-up. The unit is 3/4" thick and weighs about 9 ounces, so it is light enough to mount to your camera without weighing you down.

Small HD has developed a menu system designed to be easy to navigate with the built-in joystick. Within the system is the Pages system, which allows you to create and store up to 8 preset configurations. You can easily see the effect of your configurations on the image, swiping between the configurations using the joystick. The 501 supports 3D LUTs, and you can save those as a configuration page as well. It is worth pointing out that you can apply a configuration page setting to either the monitor's screen, the output, or both at the same time. You can also assign a different configuration set up to the monitor's screen and the output.

The SmallHD 501 on-camera monitor features a Full HD, 1920x1080, LCD display, with a pixel density of 441 PPI. The 501's LCD display is able to produce 85% NTSC Color Gamut (greater than the REC. 709 color standard), rivaling the color capabilities of OLED technology.
The monitor sports an HDMI input and HDMI output.
You can apply a 3D LUT to the monitor and still view your video in real-time.
The configuration system, Pages, allows you to create and store up to 8 presets. Presets can include focus aids, exposure aids, camera metadata, 3D LUTs. Once created, you can navigate between the presets merely by swiping the built-in joystick. You can see up to three presets displayed on the screen at the same time as you swipe between the presets, which is different than having to engage a menu system and trying to remember what the name of the preset means. You can see the effect of your configuration on the video.
The hard sided storage case holds the 501 monitor and accessories, providing protection during transport and storage.

SmallHD MON-501 reviews

501 HDMI On-Camera Field Monitor Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product Excellent product, I use with BMPCC.. And it works great... All the features are useful and easily accessible.... The only issue I had was you have to use a code to activate it the first time... I followed the steps to activate it but didn't receive the code... Had to call them the following day to get the code... Luckily I didn't have to use it the day before... This was the only issue... The performance is excellent!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great monitor w/ minor issues. I use with a GH4, this monitor provides an excellent image with many useful adjustments and software widgets especially the pages feature, all in a compact and lightweight package. I bought this field kit since I had no Canon batteries/chargers around. My complaint is that the batteries required are Canon only - I am so over having multiple kinds of batteries for multiple devices. It should have a battery plate (eg for Panny batteries) or a power socket for external supply. Activation via on-line codes etc seems an unnecessary step but worked snmoothly. On the Gh4 if you shoot 4k the camera downgrades the HDMI feed to 1080 which according to the camera may slow autofocus but I am not using AF, nor would most 4K shooters I guess. The 1080 image is perfectly fine for monitoring purposes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from All The Monitor I'll Ever Need This is not going to be a full-on technical review. This will simply be a practical review from a sound man who picked up a camera after a six-and-a half-year hiatus from filming to begin working on a series of personal projects. Even after an overdue prescription for new eyeglasses I found myself needing some additional help achieving sharper focus on my SONY FS-100. I opted for a smaller 5-inch monitor to cut weight and the smallHD 501 met my simple criteria: HDMI only input, build quality, lightweight and reasonably priced. Overall, this is all the monitor I'll ever need. My focusing is spot on now. Works great indoors. There are two caveats however with this monitor. First is the extremely short battery life in the field. If you're going remote you better carry at least six Canon LP-E6 batteries and have a charging station nearby. And at a two-and-a-half hour charging rate per battery it would be wise to have a large charging system like the Dolgin Engineering TC-40. Also, it can be quite difficult to read the monitor in outdoor light. Plan on investing in some sort of a monitor hood. Other than that, I'm extremely pleased with the monitor and its performance. For those of you needing HDMI and SDI plan on bumping up to the smallHD 502.
