Sony HXR-NX100 overview

  • 1Description

The HXR-NX100 NXCAM Professional Handheld Camcorder from Sony brings high-quality performance, adaptability, and ease of use to a compact, handheld body. The camcorder features a single Exmor R sensor with Full HD 1920x1080 resolution, Sony G lens with 12x optical zoom range, and a 24x Clear Image Zoom. The integrated zoom lens features individual lens control rings for focus, iris, and zoom. The lens can be used in either full-auto mode with servo control, or as a completely manually operated lens.

The camera supports storing up to 6 picture profiles and allows you share profiles between multiple NX100 camcorders. The camera also supports Sony's Slow and Quick Motion for shooting HD video at variable frame rates. Recording to a variety of formats, frame rates and codecs, the camcorder supports the XAVC S codec recording Full HD video at up to 59.94p, AVCHD 2.0 up to 59.94p, and DV for SD video. Your footage is recorded to media via 2 x SD memory card slots. You can choose to record simultaneously to both cards or use the relay mode which switches recording automatically to the second memory card when the first one is full. The two card slots can be controlled independently from two separate record buttons. 2 x 3-pin XLR audio inputs support line, mic, and mic + 48 V (phantom power) for using professional microphones. The camera also includes IR capability for shooting in extremely dim lighting conditions as well as date/time stamp functionality.

1" Exmor R CMOS Sensor
The HXR-NX100 incorporates a 1.0-type Exmor R CMOS sensor with 14.2 million effective pixels, which is approximately the same size as Super16mm film frame. The R designation signifies that this is a backside illuminated sensor, which places the circuitry behind the photosites, allowing more light to reach the sensors and resulting in greater low light sensitivity.
Depth of Field
The 1.0-type offers more shallow depth of field than 1/2.88-type or smaller sensors.
Sony G Lens with 12x Optical Zoom, 24x Clear Image Zoom
The HXR-NX100 is supplied with a fixed 12x 29mm wide-angle Sony G lens. The 12x optical zoom can be doubled to 24x with Clear Image Zoom, and the Digital Extender function can double this range again, up to 48x zoom.
Frame Rate Flexibility
The camcorder records using the AVCHD 2.0 codec for Full HD 1920x1080 resolution video at frame rates of 24p, 30p, 60i, and 60p. The camcorder also offers 720/60p AVCHD capture, 2x slow motion and 60x quick motion recording, as well as standard definition DV recording. The two SD card slots enable simultaneous or relay recording.
Lens Control
The three lens rings enables smooth, natural adjustment of focusing, zooming, and iris control. It can also be used in full-auto mode or completely manual for maximum creative control.
Built-In Filters
The HXR-NX100 is equipped with a ND Filter function, allowing you to choose four conventional mechanical ND filter positions (Clear, 1/4ND, 1/16ND and 1/64ND) for better exposure and depth of field control).
Media Slots
The HXR-NX100 is equipped with two memory card slots, one of which is for SDHC/SDXC cards only, while the other slot is compatible with SDHC/SDXC and Memory Stick PRO Duo (Mark 2)/Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo cards. Please note that, because of the data rate and file structure required for XAVC S recording, you must use a separately available Class 10-rated SDXC media card to record XAVC S.

Two media slots can be used to record in either "SIMUL" or "RELAY" mode. "SIMUL" mode permits simultaneous recording to two memory cards, while "RELAY" mode automatically switches recording from the first to the second memory card when the first is full.

You can set up the two Start/Stop buttons on the HXR-NX100, one on the grip and one on the camcorder body, to independently start and stop recording on different memory cards while recording in "SIMUL" mode.
Multi-Interface Shoe
The MI Shoe expands your options to use accessories without cables, such as optional HVL-LBPC Video Light or the UWP-D wireless microphone series.
EVF and LCD Viewfinder
The HXR-NX100 incorporates a 0.24-type 1550K dots EVF and 3.5-type 1550K dots LCD.
Multi-Format Recording
The HXR-NX100 records AVCHD and DV, which are suitable for conventional workflow, and newly implemented XAVC S 50Mbps, which realizes better image quality.
Picture Profiles
You can fine-tune the look of movies before shooting by adjusting up to 99 parameters such as gamma, knee, black level, color model/level/phase and more. Adjusted parameters can be saved along with other settings as a profile, and up to six profiles can be stored for later recall.

You can copy the settings from one HXR-NX100 to another HXR-NX100 so that user can shoot with multiple cameras in the same settings. The picture profiles only work with the same model of camera.

    Sony HXR-NX100 reviews

HXR-NX100 Full HD NXCAM Camcorder is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 78.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't be happier I upgraded the Sony NX100 from a Sony NX30, and I couldn't be happier. The image quality and zoom capability are perfect for my needs; one of my first complex shoots with it was a ballet performance in an outdated theater (very old lighting system), and I shot from the booth (about 100' from the stage). I still captured crisp, clear balanced close-ups of the solo dancers with very little manual adjustment. I mostly use this camera for business marketing videos, and my clients saw the quality improvement right away. I am thrilled with it, and looking at purchasing another one this year. I do have a couple of notes that aren't quite complaints, but just factors to consider. 1) The file import software is rather cumbersome (similar to Adobe Bridge to me). I previously used the Sony PlayMemories Home software because my other cameras had USB connections on the ready. With this camera, I love the idea of popping out the memory cards for file transfer, but Sony PMH doesn't recognize the card as a camera, and therefore doesn't string the file chunks together. So, I'm stuck either connecting this camera via its USB option, or using the import software that I don't like. 2) Coming from the NX30, I'm very used to a touch-screen. This camera looks like the viewscreen is a touch-screen, but it isn't. Just took a little getting used to was all. All in all, I love this camera, and so do my clients.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy as can be with this beast of Camcorder!! I shoot run and gun all across Chicago. I used to run with a Sony VG30 and every time I seen a low light shot coming I started to sweat hoping that the shot would be usable...Not anymore!! The Sony HXR-NX100 is an untamed beast in all conditions from the built in ND filter to it's extreme low light capabilities. This is by far the best outcome of a new video camera purchase ever for me and I have been shopping since the nine nine! If your looking for an all around heavy hitter this is it pound for pound, bang for buck period.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very pleased! I purchased this for an upcoming video shoot which included both interviews and short scenes. I spoke to a B&H rep before buying to make sure the video quality matched my other Sony HD camera. I found the rep knowledgeable and helpful in making my decision. When the camera arrived and I set it up and tested it I was extremely pleased with its capabilities, image quality, size and weight. Having this second camera at the shoot allowed us to get another angle. In looking at footage it does perform well in low light situations as compared to my other older Sony camera. In well lit locations I found the image quality a bit better, but not so much as to be generally noticeable. All in all a great HD camera for the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Camera for the price I use this camera for mainly sports and I've always liked the way Sony camera work with features that make things easy to use. The only couple of features that I don't like is the position of the hot shoe in reference to the rest of the weight of the camera. It's front heavy. I use and external monitor most of the time and it makes this camera very lens heavy. I wish they would have balanced the camera more. There are also a lot of manual features that have the controls on the left side of the camera but some of the main features I use every time are hidden in the menu inside. Like the simple task of reseting the timecode. There isn't a button for it, you have to go in the menu every time and reset it. Overall I am very pleased with the image this camera has. It is very clear and does pretty well in low light. For the price, I can't complain. Its a good camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow - Exceeded my expectations! I bought 2 of these to go along with an AX33 I already had so I could get consistent colors and quality. This weekend I was on 11 different outdoor, and some indoor, locations from 7 am to 9:30 pm (EST) One NX100 was on a tripod, the other on a Shape shoulder rig with a shotgun mic and the AX33 was on a jib. I've been reviewing my clips and could not be happier. Crisp, clean, great dynamics, great low light performance, wide shots, close ups, panning, zooming, still and moving. From the extremely handy ND filters, with a screen prompt when you are on the wrong one, to all the other optional manual controls and readouts... I was just blown away. I don't have a lot of experience, a couple of years, and neither did the 2nd camera operator, but this camera makes it sooo easy to get amazing shots. I must have watched at least 20 reviews and read everything I could get my hands on. The NX100 is perfect for what I do. And, B&H was spot on from ordering to customer service, shipping and pricing from NY NY to Ottawa Canada. Thanks!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Right on Target Video professional since the old days of 21lb shoulder mounts. This unit has everything anyone would want at a great price. One well kept secret is that the Image Stabilization system is NOT overriding. No floaty seasick look. Finally! The lens has enough zoom for any normal shot. Wish it was just a bit wider. Big deal. Use one of my Cinema DSLR's then with a 17-40 lens. The NX100's Focus is always spot on. On Full Auto it does everything for me so I can concentrate on the shot. It comes with a Full Remote Control unit. Also has a full-res Clean HDMI output. Nothing like using a 422 output for Green Screen Scenes. The camera is noticeably nose heavy so be careful. It can literally tip over in your hand if you have a light on the Hotshoe. Comes with all the integrated settings you always wanted. XLR port cross linking for Stereo Mono sound. LANC control thankfully has the normal 3.5mm port. Not the D-sub type of port. However I will harp about one thing. The Viewfinder has a poor scan rate so you see the RGB scan lines at times. The eye port is TINY! And the res is poor. But after all - who cares. I use the LCD Panel anyway. Overall? Love it! Bought (2) of them. Why not? (2) Camera shots are so much faster.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from High-Performance Hybrid at an Unbeatable Price I need to preface my review with the fact that I am a long-time Sony-camcorder user and am mostly basing my review on other Sony camcorders that I have used, own, or researched. I consider this a hybrid-camera: one that was born out of Sony's R&D with previous models. It takes the concept of the ENG-style shoulder camcorder, combines it with the form-factor of the EX1, borrows the prosumer features of the NX3/1, keeps the optical/imaging system of the X70/AX100/CX900, and repackages it all in this awesome little lightweight package that totally rocks! Oh yeah, and it's about $1K+ cheaper than comparable prosumer cams... So what's the catch? Well, so far I honestly can't find one. Based on my knowledge of previous Sony camcorders, the NX100 met 90% of my hopes and expectations. The size/weight are perfect. The kit battery has plenty of juice. The external battery charger was an unexpected but highly-welcomed surprise. The standard Sony L-battery and power supply are tried and true. Now to the really good parts! This is a prosumer cam with almost all the bells and whistles that set a good ENG prosumer cam apart from a high-end consumer cam at a price point typical of the latter. 3-rings, all very smooth and precise allow for very accurate adjustment. Focus peaking is spot-on. The focus ring is easy to use, the zoom ring is typical of fly-by-wire servo zoom rings, and the iris ring is smooth and step-less...wonderful! LANC is included for remote control zoom and start/stop! Audio is full-featured: 2 channels of internal or external XLR with phantom power, fully adjustable, low-cut, limiter, manual levels, and the option to use the hot-shoe with Sony's wireless mic system. Buttons are placed on the side for all your essential camera functions for full-manual control. The NON-touch screen is a welcome feature as you can actually navigate the menus by a traditional keypad. Buttons are assignable as well. Two-card slots are a welcome upgrade coming from CX900s and I'm very happy to see the inclusion of XAVCS 50Mbps. This cam to me seems to be everything the the X70 wanted to be with what I loved about the NX3/1 at a price cheaper than both. It doesn't get much better than that! Oh yeah, it also has picture profiles reminiscent of the EX1 which is unheard of at this price point! Sony's getting back around to producing some epic gear at competitive prices. I have a theory about the low price. 4K is the in-thing right now, and HD is seen as going the way of SD. The camera companies and TV manufacturers are pushing 4K, so in order to compete in prosumer land, Sony needed to produce a camcorder for people who want the clean, beautiful picture a 1 chip puts out but who don't need 4K and want it in a prosumer ENG package. This cam delivers and I have no complaints in that regard. I would like to dabble in 4K, but just a heads up to anyone who cares...4K is just an intermediate format that will be replaced in less than 5 years. Sure, we are going from 2MP to 8MP video with 4K imaging, but when 8K comes out we will be pushing about 32MP at high frame rates like 120Hz progressive. Now THAT is impressive! 4K just pales in comparison to 8K, and NHK, a leading global broadcasting company, has already stated they are skipping 4K and developing 8K broadcasting systems. A word to the wise: don't get too invested in 4K because your gear will be outdated in less than a decade. Also, higher frame rates are making a comeback. 30p is the standard these days, but 60p is gaining popularity. What is the visual difference between 60p and 60i? Not much other than that the internet doesn't do 60i so it is down-converted to 30p for uploading. Oh yeah, we've had 60i since the 1940s...ironic? 4K shows how quadrupling the resolution from HD does not make as much visual impact as it does doing the same from SD. HD looks much better than SD, but 4K doesn't look 4 times better than HD. It just looks a little better. Why am I saying all this? The NX100 is a killer HD cam that is tack sharp, has low noise, and brilliant color. It is in no way inferior because it doesn't put out or record a 4K signal. Now I must say there is one thing I really don't like about this camera. The NX3/1, X70, AX100, and CX900 all suffer from this same problem: the slowest zoom speed is STILL TOO FAST. Come on Sony, lens servo motors are analog devices by nature and can be infinitely variable in speed. PLEASE release a firmware update that allows us to utilize a slower zoom speed! It is for this ONE reason that I take off a star because after all this time, Sony still refuses to recognize the need for slow zooms. My EX1 can do it, but the picture quality from that camera just doesn't look as nice as the rich, deep, and clean picture from the NX100. Is B4 lens-handling too much to ask in a prosumer cam? I guess so... But don't let that defer you. That, in my opinion, is the only weakness of this amazing camera. If your work is ENG, events, corporate, run-and-gun, documentary, etc. then there is no reason NOT to get this cam, even if you use it as a B-cam. My own shooting style for theater performances and church services requires slow and subtle zooms, so this is a bigger deal to me than it is to most other people. I realize that so I want to put that in perspective. Guess I got spoiled with the EX1's zoom handling after using it for 6 years. Bottom line: this cam is revolutionary in terms of what it offers for the price tag. When you look at what you get for the money, it is more than worth it. Just buy it and you'll know why.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Cam for price First off if you're even considering this camera I extremely recommend you using a Lexar 128GB Professional 1000x UHS-II SDXC Memory Card (Class 10, UHS Speed Class 3) b/c if not the camera will have problems processing the footage. I use Avid Media Composer and it will not even read the data from any card less than the one I suggested. The camera is great but only if you have a high memory card in place otherwise don't bother, get yourself a cheap camcorder. U have to use the right equipment to make anything work. You can't go cheap on everything.
