Whether you are about to embark on an expedition to the ends of the Earth or a more subdued day hike, the Garmin GPSMAP 64st has features you will appreciate. This GPS unit's 2.6" screen lets you easily navigate through its many features as well as its pre-loaded topographic maps and satellite photos. A 3-axis compass is built-in so you will always know your heading. An altimeter lets you know how far you are above sea level, and can help predict weather trends. The unit runs off two AA batteries or the optional rechargeable NiMH pack.

Purchase of this unit also includes a 1-year subscription to BirdsEye Satellite Imagery. This service provides you with up-to-date aerial images of the terrain you are navigating so you can plan the best route. This also allows you to find parking areas, trailheads, and possible places to camp. These views are also useful for geocaching activities.

This unit utilizes both GPS and GLONASS satellites for quicker signal acquisition so you get a fix on your position approximately 20 times faster than GPS alone. A worldwide basemap is stored on the unit's internal memory so you will always have an idea of where you are. The unit's built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass shows your heading even while standing still, no matter how it is positioned. It also houses a barometric altimeter which tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude so you will know your distance from sea level. The altimeter also lets you plot barometric pressure over time which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions.

The 64st also features built-in paperless geocaching software, so you can transfer your data to your computer with the supplied USB cord or upload it onto the Web. The unit's screen displays key information, including location, terrain, cache difficulty rating, and hints and descriptions of hiding spots. All of this means no more manually entering coordinates and paper printouts for your geocaching hobby.

You can wirelessly share your data and images using the built-in Bluetooth connectivity with other Garmin devices. This unit also features ANT+ technology so your GPS can communicate with other devices so equipped such as heart rate, cadence, chirp and tempe sensors. Smart notifications let you receive emails, texts and more, right on the screen from your iPhone 4s or later wirelessly.

Store up to 5000 waypoints on the receiver's built-in memory as well as 10,000 points and 200 saved tracks. A micro SD card slot lets you load TOPO 24K maps for hiking, Trailhead Series TOPO maps for famous trails, BlueChart g2 charts for boating, or City Navigator NT maps data for turn-by-turn routing on roads.

GPSMAP 64st Handheld GPS is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use and accurate I am using the GPS for snowshoeing and hiking. I like having the buttons for easy use while wearing gloves. The pre-installed 100k TOPO map is nice for Midwest hiking. The points of interest database is very, very good as well. If you are doing serious mountain hiking, consider getting 20K TOPO maps from Garmin or the free online sources. Another nice feature is the large 8 gig memory of the ST compared to the other GPSMap models. It has room to store a number of large detailed maps. I also added a 32 gig micro SD card, so I have a huge amount of space for storing data. Finally, I love the build quality, it is very solid.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Handheld GPS Unit Finally replaced my Magellan Meridian Platinum whose display died after 10 years of faithful service. This unit has all the features that I liked in the Magellan and much more. TOPO Maps come preloaded, and backlit color display is easy to read. Some of the control buttons are a bit small, but that is expected from such a compact device. Placement of buttons on the unit is perfect for me. Looking forward to testing its performance in narrow valleys and high tree cover areas that are common here, to see if Garmin's claims of superior reception are true.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product In the era of smartphones and touch screen devices sometimes 'old school' is the way to go. The unit is very intuitive to use; a few minutes spent with the device and you'll be up and running. Being able to power with a set of AA batteries certainly is superior thinking; I have several units with proprietary battery assemblies and those should be banned from the backcountry or by anyone using the device professionally...you can't beat the ubiquitous AA for convienience. The device acquires satellites quickly and holds them even in dense cover. The screen is clear and adequately sized...larger and I'm certain battery life would suffer; it would also not fit the hand quite so nicely. Garmin's BASECAMP (application used for route planning and sharing data/ trips) is less than perfect, but, I'm certain this is something the company is working on.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Like the unit accuracy, dislike the software and mapping I have a love/hate relationship with Garmin as I find their offerings overpriced and short of software. This is my second unit as I am ok with the reliability, accuracy of the GPS and track recording though admittedly I do get differing results when retracing same tracks and routes. Use common sense and don't ever rely on step to step accuracy. The downsides are in the Garmin software both in the unit and online. In the unit the menus and commands are cumbersome and old. Try naming a saved track or waypoint. Agh, it is so archaic. Garmin BaeCamp needs attention as it is a poor platform though admittedly improving. Garmin irritates me with their topo mapping and pricing as they are mostly outdated and poor. I have four Garmin units and annoyed at spending hundreds of dollars buying Garmin 24K topos. Word of warning, if you buy the maps buy the SD card and don"t download as the downloads do not seem to be transferable. Garmin, if you are listening, get out of the '90s and start looking at what the smartphones are doing. I have to spend money on a phone anyhow and the GPS tracking is very close and in some ways better than your dedicated units. The rechargeable battery pack is not worth the high price tag. If you look onto the unit yourself you may be able to figure out how to use your own for a fraction of the cost. I have been doing this on unit #1 for two years now and no issues whatsoever. All in all, if you need a dedicated unit this is not bad. I still use mine everyday on our local trails but for how much longer I cannot say.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic does-it-all GPS Small size, easy to carry and can be mounted anywhere. Screen is big enough to see, color and image is clear, no problems with screen glare in the sun. I purchased the additional street maps and can use it for turn-by-turn directions in my car or on my motorcycle. In the airplane, I switch to the direct route mode and it's great for casual VFR flying. I can't find anything wrong with it. If you want a touch screen, then this isn't for you. I didn't want a touch screen and this perfectly meets all of my needs. Fantastic!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product, but didn't come with all components. Happy with product in general. Only complaint is USB charging cable wasn't included as advertised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good GPS I am not sure I understand the reviews that say it is difficult to operate. It seems pretty intuitive. The manual that comes with it is a decent starting point, but there is plenty of information online to fill in the blanks. Fast, accurate, and the included terrain map is very detailed saves you from having to buy it separately. And of course there is B&H's usual fast shipping and great service.
