Genius idea or the pix-e line of recorders. Slip it out of the back of the recorder and straight into your computer to download. Stupidly fast! and amazingly cheap for the mSata memory components. All companies should adopt this 'open' kind of media writing.

Solid build

Bought this to put inside the Samsung 500GB msata drive and this thing is all metal. Better build construction than the entire Atomos shogun monitor I had before.

Lovely, and if you have 1, can't go wrong with 2

Bought this so we have 2 speeddrives with out E5 recorder, the empty case is super cost effective, especially if you have an SSD lying around you picked up on sale. Makes our production time between events much less stressful to swap in a new speed drive rather than chewing pencils and pens trying to get the last recording moved off & the media empty & snapped back in before the next service starts.

Great concept. Works as advertised.

Thank goodness for this enclosure. I dropped my own mSATA (480 GB unit) and it works like a charm. I can edit right off of this unit. Good price and much better than regular SSDs or other expensive media.

Genius!

The implementation of the speed drive is excellent, I found it so convenient to just pop it into any computer right after shooting. And the build quality of the enclosure is top notch! I definitely recommend buying your Msata SSD separate, it's great that they allow you to do this.

Super easy to put together and cheaper this way. A couple times the drive has not been recognized by my Pix E5, but as always Sound Devices Cust. Service was great and helped me figure out what to do. Hopefully as firmware grows this will be even more rare. I love these as media though!

great product. well built. easy to use

If you have a PIX recorder, this is obviously a must have. I picked up a couple extras for recording longer events. Highly recomended. Well built.

Would the Samsung 1TB 860 EVO SATA III M.2 ...

Would the Samsung 1TB 860 EVO SATA III M.2 Internal SSD (MZ-N6E1T0BW) be compatible with this enclosure? It appears the Samsung 1TB 860 EVO SATA III M.SATA Internal SSD (MZ-M6E1T0BW) has been discontinued.
Asked by: David
It is compatible with the Samsung M.Sata cards (MZ-M6E1T0BW) specifically. NOT THE NEWER M.2 860 EVO. I found some on ebay, but, yes I believe they are discontinued.

Can anyone recommend an mSATA card for this ...

Can anyone recommend an mSATA card for this enclosure as of today (January 2020)? I just acquired a second-hand Pix-E5, and would like to pick up a card to pair with this enclosure.
Asked by: David
The card recommended by the BHphoto staff is incorrect - M.2 SSD is the wrong shape. Please correct this BH as it's confusing. The other responses are correct - mSATA. Search for Pix-E5 approved storage devices on the Sound Devices website.

question

Which mSATA card is recommended for this enclosure?
Asked by: Richard
Currently (as of July 2016) Video Devices has only listed the Samsung 850 EVO mSATA cards (either 250gb, 500gb, or 1tb) on their approved media list recommended to work with their speed drive enclosure. I would imagine other brands of mSATA cards may work but if you want to be safe like me then get the approved 850 EVO in the size you need. B&H carries all three of those sizes!

question

Has anyone tried using these as an external drive to edit off of?
Asked by: Rudolph James
This is just the hard drive enclosure with a USB 3 plug. You need to purchase the Solid State drive separately. Depending on the type of footage you probably could edit off of it, but this enclosure is made more for capturing footage on the PIX-E and then offloading it to another drive to edit with. There are plenty of other options for USB 3.0 Hard Drive enclosures if that's what you are looking for.

question

For you with 256Gb how much recording time do you get with at 4k Pro Rez 24fps?
Asked by: Richard
I use the recording PIX linked to the rec camera button. So, you dont generate too many handless. You can work with this for 6 hours with no problem. I recomend 2 of 256GB, so you can switch whenever you want to do backups, and im pretty sure you wont need more space in one day (or maybe 2). Just did a job using it for 10 continuous hours shooting musicians.
