Leica Q (Typ 116) overview

  • 1Description

A no compromise compact, the black Leica Q (Typ 116) Digital Camera wields a full-frame 24.2-megapixel CMOS sensor within its exceptionally portable, and beautiful, body. Leveraging the power of the Leica Maestro II series image processor, high-resolution, low-noise imaging is possible at sensitivities up to ISO 50000 and at a continuous rate of 10 fps. Also, the camera utilizes a Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. lens to allow users to dramatically separate the subject from the background as well as work in difficult light conditions.

The design is benefitted by Leica's classic simple aesthetic and the body has easily read laser engraved lettering, numbers, and dials. Construction is solid with a machined aluminum top plate and a lightweight magnesium alloy body. Also, it has a large thumb rest on the back and a diamond pattern on the front leathering to ensure a firm, comfortable grip over the camera. Further, the Q (Typ 116) has a built-in 3.68-megapixel LCOS electronic viewfinder which provides a live through-the-lens image with handling similar to that of a rangefinder.

In addition to fully manual control with physical operation using the aperture and focus rings on the lens, auto focus is possible using a contrast-based system. This enables fast, sharp imaging at the click of the shutter. The rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD monitor helps by allowing users to quickly take control of their focus by just tapping on their subject. Focusing aids are also available in the form of Focus Peaking and Live View Zoom.

Another benefit of the updated Maestro II processor is Full HD 1080p video capture at 60 or 30 fps. A built-in stereo microphone enables high-quality sound recording and an integrated wind filter limits extraneous noise. Full manual control will then allow users to dial in the exact look they want or need for their shot.

Share your photos and videos instantly thanks to an integrated Wi-Fi module which allows you to link the camera to a smartphone, tablet, or computer. The Q also has an NFC chip for tap-to-connect functionality with certain devices and the free Leica Q app lets you take remote control of your camera for adjusting exposure while you shoot from odd angles and positions.

Leica Q (Typ 116)
With Leica's classic styling's, the Q (Typ 116) offers an intuitive, minimal design while remaining compact. It packs a full-frame sensor and Summilux lens for optimal image quality in both stills and video. An electronic viewfinder is also available for rangefinder-like operation and handling, much like their M-series cameras.
24MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and Maestro II Image Processor
Featuring a full-frame 24MP CMOS sensor, this camera can capture sharp high-resolution images and Full HD video with exceptionally low noise at sensitivities up to ISO 50000. Combined with the power of the Maestro II image processor, this enables continuous shooting at a rate of up to 10 fps and video at up to 60 fps.
Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens
Take control of your imaging with the ability to separate the subject from the background with the Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. lens of the Leica Q (Typ 116). It has a fast f/1.7 maximum aperture for working in low light conditions and both a physical aperture blade and focus ring for tactile operation. Users looking for a little tighter framing can benefit from a Digital Frame Selector setting which will crop in either 1.25x to a 35mm equivalent or 1.8x for a 50mm equivalent field of view, both of which will be visible on the EVF and LCD. Additionally, further benefitting image quality is an optical stabilization system to reduce camera shake in videos and photos and the ability to accept 49mm threaded filters.
Electronic Viewfinder
Natural, ergonomic shooting is possible with the inclusion of a 3.68MP LCOS electronic viewfinder in the top left corner on the back of the camera. This setup provides an exceptionally clear and bright viewing experience with a 1280 x 960 pixels x 3 colors design.
3.0" 1.04m-Dot LCD Touchscreen
Compose images, review photos, and adjust settings using the large 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD touchscreen on the rear of the camera. This panel is also touch capable for making fast changes to your settings. This enables features like touch focus for simply tapping on your subject to lock on.
Full HD 1080p Video Recording
Record full HD 1080p video at either 60 or 30 fps with the Q, capturing sharp, highly detailed images thanks to the Maestro II image processor. The camera can also shoot 720p at 30 fps.
Body Design
Incorporating a solid machined aluminum top plate and a magnesium alloy body, the Q (Typ 116) is designed to last. The rear features a substantial thumb rest which combined with the diamond-patterned leathering makes for a supremely comfortable and secure grip over the camera.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity with NFC
Share your photos and videos instantly thanks to an integrated Wi-Fi module which allows you to link the camera to a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Leica Q (Typ 116) reviews

Q (Typ 116) Digital Camera (Black) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 60.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal Great body, ergonomics, and absolutely astounding lens. Calling the camera a phenomenal lens attached to a body may be oversimplifying things but that's effectively what it is. in typical Leics fashion the menu system is very simple and intuitive. Te body feels like it could take anything thrown at it. The EVF is probably one of the best out there. Autofocus is fast and snappy. It's a camera that's ready to go as soon as it's turned on, and one that get's out the way of the picture taking process. A very enjoyable device, albeit a very expensive one. If you can afford it, do yourself a favour and get it. The attached images are SOOC Jpegs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't ever try one! You will almost certainly want to buy one. Small, light, simple, unobtrusive. The lens is gorgeous and sharp. Great bokeh. Great color. Takes a better photo than my 5DIII, and ISO 6000-12000 is very usable, unlike my 5DIII. The noise takes on a pleasing film grain structure, especially after the recent firmware update. I find myself using my DSLRs less and less, and have toyed with the notion of getting rid of all my DSLR equipment. It's that good. The only question is how you feel about 28mm. I love 24; it's my most used FL, so the Q was a no-brainer. Would be nice if a few firmware changes were implemented, but still, a masterpiece.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it. I shot with my M-P typ 240 and a 35mm Summilux for two years before trying out the Q and being astonished. I expected something similar to Sony's full frame fixed lens competitor, which is also nice, but I have to say the Q is superior and not that much more expensive. It is a joy to shoot with and has now replaced my M. The image rendering is incredible. The autofocus and manual focus are both a pleasure. And the interface is an simple and considered. It doesn't have the same feel of the M, but it becomes much more useful as an everyday carry camera, especially if you want to share images with friends quickly through the WiFi.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick, responsive, stealthy: a photojournalists dream camera As an international documentary photographer, I had been looking for a digital camera that could give me quick response and high frame rates, be completely unobtrusive and whisper quiet, provide exceptional images while giving me great control with an easy to use menu. I tend to use my feet rather than rely on zooms and work toward making close, intimate photos of key moments. So, I didn't need an interchangeable lens. While the price is up there, the quality of the 28mm summilux and subsequent image files are remarkable. Really compares to the M line but I like it better because of the compact size, 10fps and exceptionally quick autofocus. I've missed very few shots. For stealth, street, travel, reportage, this is probably the best camera on the market at the moment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simplify your life, get this camera I've owned many cameras (Nikon, Fuji, Olympus), but keep coming back to Leica. Life is simple with the Q. You travel light, no need to worry about which lens to take and you can also shoot some lovely macros. You've got full auto or manual down to 1.7 which allows no flash when it's very poor lighting. This camera is the best I've owned for the above reasons and also for the simple fact it takes great shots right out of the camera without the need to use Lightroom to adjust the contrast/brightness, etc.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A joy to use! I've about worn out my Canon 5D II. Last year I bought a used Sony RX1, and have seriously enjoyed using it. I love getting the full frame perspective and rich images in such a small package. But Sony's menu system is serious and deep, and I don't know that I've ever learned the camera's secrets and treasures. And, since I spend too much time photographing dogs and cats, I have had to cope with its modest focusing speed. So reviews of the Leica Q stressing its speed and the minimalist organization of its menus caught my attention, but I couldn't imagine spending what the Q would cost. Then my sister took ill and died, catching me by surprise. That's when I thought--you can scrape together the money. Go for it now, while you can. So, I did. And I am sooo very happy that I did. The Q is fantastically built, and even better designed than I expected from the reviews. All the settings are right there at your fingertips, making it easy to switch from full automatic through aperture or shutter priority, or easily to full manual. It's been a joy to use! Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We just came back from Cuba Took the Q with 2 other camera systems to Cuba on an assignment for elle magazine. Came back with 3000 shots made exclusively with he Q. The other cameras stayed at the hotel vault. I'll give you a link so you can see what the Q and I came up with. http://rodriguezahr.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/cuba-defrosting-world.html

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As good as they say...better even I have access to a lot of cameras, as such, I only buy one for myself every several years. I've shot DSLRs traditionally and loved them, but I often found myself leaving my bulky rig behind and using my phone on trips...and while I love my phone, I also love raw, image quality, tactile/mechanical controls and a camera that's a great camera - only. So, I rented the Leica Q, in part to talk myself out of it (it isn't cheap and it's almost comically constrained)...well, that didn't work...I feel in love with it. I guess I should close by saying that I take it with me everywhere...so it really lived up to the promise of going smaller. I adore this camera...it replaces my DSLR and phone for street, travel, indoor and candid.
