Sigma 24-35mm f/2.0 overview

  • 1Description

Sigma has expanded their ever growing Global Vision line with the world's first constant f/2 aperture on a full-frame zoom lens, the 24-35mm f/2 DG HSM Art Lens, available here with the Nikon F lens mount. The groundbreaking aperture combined with the versatile wide-angle 24-35mm focal length allows photographers to easily replace three common lenses, the 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm, with one piece of gear. The lens also offers exceptional control over depth-of-field with an aperture range from f/2 to 16, and when used on DX camera bodies it has an equivalent focal length of 36-52.5.

Along with the rest of the Art series, the 24-35mm offers high quality optics with the use of one "F" Low Dispersion and seven Special Low Dispersion glass elements in addition to two aspherical lenses. This system minimizes the appearance of spherical aberration, axial chromatic aberration and field curvature. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is present to reduce flare and ghosting for sharp, high-contrast images and it can focus as close as 11".

In terms of speed, this lens is equipped with a Hyper Sonic AF Motor which is nearly silent and has an optimized autofocus algorithm for fast, accurate tracking. The body of the 24-35mm is constructed of a Thermally Stable Composite material which performs well in all conditions. The barrel also has a focus ring with grants full-time manual override and the system is designed for completely internal focusing. Further ensuring optimal performance is compatibility with Sigma's USB Dock for firmware updates and AF microadjustment.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
The wide-angle 24-35mm focal length effectively covers three common lenses: the 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm. This allows users to shoot with just one lens and not worry about carrying additional equipment or swapping out optics in less-than-ideal weather conditions. When used with a DX-format sensor, the lens offers a 36-52.5mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/2 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
This lens has been designed using an advanced optical structure to achieve both high resolution and sharpness, along with consistent edge-to-edge illumination. A pair of aspherical elements correct for sagittal coma flare, distortion, and axial chromatic aberration, while also enabling full use of the fast f/2 maximum aperture with maintained peripheral brightness and sharpness.
One FLD and seven SLD glass elements have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for chromatic aberrations throughout the entire focusing range and help to ensure high image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material along with traditional metals for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. The outside of the lens barrel is also engraved with the year of production.
The included lens hood is fitted with a rubber connection for a secure fit.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

    Sigma 24-35mm f/2.0 reviews

24-35mm f/2 DG HSM Art Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very special lens I am a wedding and event photographer. I have used this lens on at least 20 events so far. There is a quality to the way that this lens captures images that I have never seen before in a zoom lens. It is as sharp as any of my Nikon prime lenses and has the verstility of being a zoom. It has excellent control of flaring and renders colors very naturally. This lens has a pretty specific focal length and fits well into a larger ecosystem that I use to shoot weddings. Besides the other more specialized lenses I use to capture certain unique aspects of a wedding, I always have my 70-200 on my second camera and feel confident I will be able to capture any moment the second it happens with this setup. Can't say enough good things about this lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid I have previously had 35mm and 50mm from the Art lineup. The 24-35mm f/2 Art is not as sharp as the 35mm, but very close to it. The 50mm Art is in a league of its own. Packing 24mm, 28mm and 35mm into a single lens, without compromising much quality, is really something. I am very happy that Sigma is pushing the boundaries and trying new concepts. This might not be the perfect lens, lacking a bit more reach, but this is for sure a really well made and practical peace of glass.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not as sharp as the 35 prime but close I jumped in and bought this limited zoom as since I have had my 35mm Art I don't want to put another lens on my camera. I felt this could tie me over till the new 24-70mm's on the horizon get reviewed (with Nikons weeks away and Sigma Art version rumoured to be coming soon). I bought a sigma 50mm prime to go with it so I have more of the range covered. I did some test shooting today against my Tamron 24-70 VC and my sigma prime at 35mm. On the same manual settings the prime was noticeably brighter, with the Sigma 24-35mm and the Tamron being similar. After some pixel peeping I'd sit this lens closer to the 35mm prime than the Tamron in terms of sharpness. The prime is better though when you focus on the centre. At f2.8 this 24-35 lens is sharper than the Sigma 35mm on the outer third of the shot a little, which surprised me, but the prime catches it by f4 in this area. The prime is sharper in the centre at all values from 2.8-5.6 and the Tamron is softer at all values over the whole shot, but performs a bit closer to the sigma's at f4 and f5.6. I will sell my Tamron, but am impressed that it wasn't blown out of the water. This 24-35mm is close enough to my prime for me to sell my 35mm and just use this with a 50mm Art. I followed this up with some shots at f2 against the prime and the gap between them seemed to narrow a little at this aperture, with the 24-35 closer to holding its own. Wondering if it had been the right move after all this I walked out at dusk just now and took some shots at f2 and it put my fears to rest. They came out beautifully! I'm feeling it will be a great walk around lens for low light group shots, particularly indoors with limited space. Hope this helps some people, I am certainly no pro but rely on peoples reviews on here a lot, thought I could give a bit back with this one. I was coming here for weeks trying to find a review on this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes, I would purchase this product again. This is my 2nd recent Sigma purchase after the 150-600 Sport that I purchased a couple of months back. The first thing that one notices on receiving the product, is the build quality. Many reviewers said it was weighty but I personally do not feel so, it does feel solid and professional. The nice zippered case it comes in is an added bonus. I purchased, this lens to get a wide angle option for AstroPhotography and the fact this this is a F/2 lens, it almost eliminates the need to really 'up' the ISO. For star trails I went with 1250 and I feel I made a mistake, since a tone of dim stars (which really added to the clutter) were captured too. So a great, fast lens.Loving it so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal lens in all respects:Sharpness, Autofocus, Image! I have been lucky to have been one of the first few to buy and use this lens, and I must say, it has been an absolute privilege to use it. I am a professional photographer and need the best portrait lens for my work. I have been skeptical about using a zoom prime lens, but this one blows out the competition. Also want to point out, I do not get any remuneration from Sigma or @ for these reviews.1. Image quality:The image quality and the color rendering is beautiful. The image is at par with the quality and sharpness of the Sigma 50mm F1.4 ART and the Sigma 35mm f1.4 ART. The colors are not over saturated, and gives a more Ziess ish look to the images.2. Sharpness: This lens is sharp... its razor sharp. But beware, this being a zoom lens, you have to nail the focus everytime to get the best images. A slight movement after focus locking will ruin the picture.3. Auto focus: The speed is astounding. I had no problem getting fast and quiet auto focus every time on my Nikon D750s. I haven't tried the lens on other slower AF cameras like Nikon D610/D600s. The auto focus of this lens might be because of the camera too...because I never lose focus or need hunting even with other slow lenses on the Nikon D750 beast. I have used this lens in virtual dark, low light studio and in bright sunlight. I have not had any issues with fast and accurate auto focus.4. Flaring: I tried using this lens facing the sun, sun peeking from behind a dark building, between leaves, with no hood and tried my best...but could not get this lens to show flares!5. Front and Back focussing issues: I didn't have any such issues with my copy. It seems Sigma checks this lens for the focussing issues before sending to retail.6. Weight and Build: This is a behemoth. It is heavy, beautifully crafted, and feels like a solid piece in hand. It feels almost the same as my Nikon 80-200 f2.8 lens (which is a masterpiece by itself). For me the heavy helps as it helps me keep the hands stable. The zoom ring has a nice matte feel and is nicely damped. The lens feels good in hand and can surely take a few hits and still stand its ground. In a nutshell... go for it! If you can't get good images with this.... something is really wrong with the technique!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Above and beyond I purchased this lens a few weeks ago and have since had it on my camera almost all the time. The optics are great and it feels perfect while using it. It is a hefty lens however and so walking around with it does for several hours does make you feel the weight. It is quite while focusing and is smooth to zoom in and out. Very pleased with the product and would recommend it to anyone looking for a wide angle instead of a super wide angle.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Better skip this one I bought this as a low light indoor lens for events and family gatherings. After putting it on my Nikon D750, I noticed it was slow to autofocus and was front focusing. Using the Sigma dock I also bought, I adjusted the focus at 35mm. Better but still not as fast or sharp as my 24-120 f4 Nikon lens. I also added some AF adjustment in camera with little effect. I decided for such a small focal range, the lack of sharpness was not acceptable and returned both items. I was able to get a sharp focus using live picture and manual focus - but who has time for that when you're snapping photos at a party?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Biggest Cuality came on a small Package When I bought this lenses i did not realize the huge quality of it and now that im using it really impress with the color, contrast, focus and sharpens of the image more than recommend great product.
