This innovative 055LC Leveling Center Column from Manfrotto is a leveling system designed for select 055 series tripods. It allows you to quickly level your photo or video head independently from the tripod. A built-in 50mm half ball with a 15° range of movement is mounted on top of the center column, allowing the angle of the plate to be positioned separately from the rest of the tripod.

Is the O55 LC compatible with the Manfrotto 443 Carbon One tripods? according to Manfrotto the 554 Leveling Column is compable with both the 055 and 440/441/442 tripods. it seems reasonable to assume that the 055 would be compatible with the 443 as well.
As per Manfrotto : The 443 tripod is thinner and the 055 LC will not be compatible .

Do you have to remove the handle from bottom of center column in order to install it through tripod center?
If you are referring to the bottom of the column, yes that comes off so you can put the column or off.

does this come in a shorter version? I have this ...
does this come in a shorter version? I have this column but I find it to be too long? Or can this one be shortened? I know of the shorter ones that do not have the leveling function, not looking for those.
Unfortunately there isnt a shorter leveling column.

Is this compatible with the MA055CXPRO4?
Technically it would work, but its really designed for the newer versions so the rubber guard at the top won't sit properly.

does manfrotto make any short center columns for 055 so camera can be placed lower to ground?
The shorter center column that would work with the 055 is item # 055XSCC however it appears that B&H doesn't carry it. You can find it either on the Manfrotto website or through other dealers. That column is about 9.76 in length.

How is this different from the Manfrotto 555B Leveling Center Column?
This version is made for the 055 New Series such as the MT055XPRO3. The 555B is for the older versions of the 055 tripods and won't properly fit the newer tripods.
