Zacuto Z-GEC Reviews
Only needed a third of it
I only needed the eye-cup flap as I lost mine on a shoot. Unfortunate waste of rubber and money to have to buy the whole unit. I found this unusable to operate with the flap connected, so easy to lose. I replaced it purely to protect the glass. I would have gladly paid another $5 and have two flaps in the case.
Great
I make eyecups for my Sony cameras with these. Id been buying the previous version without the auto closing lid, and when this came out I tore off the cover and then read the instructions to find out that you swipe the eyecup over your temple to open the lid. Doh! Great idea and it works, AND you can reattach that lid easily.
Needed it to replace my Alphatron Eyecup
Works but it takes some fiddling to get into the Alphatron. Only replacement out there on the market available. Nice because the flap closes to add an extra level of protection for the fragile Alphatron Retina led screen which will burn in ten seconds into the pixels if the sun enters. Not a perfect fit but it works fine.
Slightly Better Than Original
The original cap was horrible, always fell off and was basically useless. This one is only slightly better. It also never securely closes and flaps hanging loosely closed. I used a small piece of velcro and super glued it on each end to secure it closed. I find this mind blowing that Zacuto can not find a proper solution and then charges top dollar for only a partial solutions.
Better than the original
This replacement works better than the original. More substantial, it is more secure on the body of the viewer and the closing eyecup is more convenient than I imagined it would be.
Great idea, easy to use.
This is a really great idea to prevent bad things from happening to nice people. When I first saw this I thought it might work to prevent your camera LCD screen from being damaged from the sun since the viewfinder it fits on is just a big magnifying lens pointed at the camera screen. But I thought you would give up comfort for function but I was wrong the cover flips out of the way and it does not bother or obstruct the use of the eyecup. The best part is it really reasonable priced.
Updated and improved
The older eyecup had 2 holes on the side of the cup where the auto-closing cover would attach. When you take the cover off, it reveals the 2 holes, which let light in while you've got your eye to the vf. Now, this newer one has the 2 holes on the closing cover instead, and 2 bunnies on the eyecup itself. No more holes on the eyecup, no more light leak!
It's a replacement for the Gratical or other viewfinder
It does what it's supposed to do. All you need to do is add a Blue-Star Zacuto Oval Eyecushion and you are set.
