Venus Optics 15mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Venus Optics is offering photographers the first native option to get started in the world of wide-angle macro photography with the Laowa 15mm f/4 Macro Lens, available here for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras. Before now, wide-angle macro required the use of extension tubes and other workarounds, but now the Laowa 15mm Macro offers true 1:1 magnification without the hassle. The ultra-wide perspective on full-frame cameras allows users to get exceptionally close to their subjects with a minimum focus distance of just 4.7", and have them fill the frame, while still capturing the background for more informative scenes. Internal focusing further assists by not disturbing your subject, even when you reach the 0.2" minimum working distance.

Optically, it is designed to minimize distortion that plagues wide-angle lenses with the use of an advanced 12 element in 9 group construction with one extra-low dispersion and three high-refractive elements. A multi-layer low-reflective coating further improved image quality by reducing the appearance of flare and ghosting. Also, when used on APS-C cameras, or in crop modes, the lens offers +/- 6mm of vertical shift which can help correct for perspective when shooting objects such as buildings.

Full manual operation is required with this lens through the use of a physical aperture ring with a range of f/4 to f/32 and a large focusing ring. A flat front element provides room for a 77mm front filter thread for using a selection of specialized filters to enhance your scene. Additionally, it has a near circular 14-blade diaphragm for smooth out of focus elements and comes with a lens hood.

Ultra-wide 110° angle of view on full-frame cameras.
The wide-angle lens offers a 35mm equivalent focal length of 24mm with an 85° angle of view when used on APS-C cameras bodies or in crop modes.
Wide aperture range of f/4 to f/32.
Lens construction features 12 elements in 9 groups with 3 high-refractive elements and on extra-low dispersion element.
Minimum focus distance of 4.7" with a minimum working distance of just 0.2".
Manual focus and aperture control.
When used with APS-C cameras, the Laowa 15mm Macro can utilize +/-6 mm of vertical shift to help correct perspective.
True 1:1 magnification allows photographers to capture life-sized images of their subjects while still providing infinity focus for use as a standard wide-angle lens.
Near-circular 14-blade aperture diaphragm provides smooth out-of-focus elements.
Accepts 77mm threaded filters.

    Venus Optics 15mm f/4.0 reviews

Laowa 15mm f/4 Macro Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing lens, one of a kind capability Can make crazy and unusual macro photos. The images are sharp. The aperture (important for very wide angle) can produce a nice starburst when aimed into the sun (although can flare if not careful). Using this lens is challenging -- the lens itself is superb, but wide-angle macro has a host of issues: keeping the lens from casting a shadow on a subject and simply coming up with creative compositions. While I'm fine with full manual, the one suggestion for improvement would be to have an aperture stop so a photographer can move from f4 to whatever the lighting is set for (e.g., f11) by touch alone. This lens isn't for most people I suspect, but is a powerful creative tool for some.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun Lens I found on my full frame Canon 5D Mark III it's a sharp and fast lens. It is all manual so for fast moving insects can be a challenge. It can focus on something touching the front of the lens and when your subject is that close light becomes the issue. Being 15mm gives macro images a totally different look, this is why I purchased this lens. I have not seen soft issues with this lens, my copy is sharp as a tack. Great landscape lens, fun macro lens, it is all metal and seems very well built.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you love macro, get this lens - no questions... I've only taken this lens out once but I absolutely love the photographs I've gotten with it. I will post a couple. This lens is very challenging to use. For me it's extremely hard to see if my subject is in focus or not. But if you are looking at this lens and considering it, there is probably a part of you that loves macro photography; and if you love macro photography you enjoy a good challenge. Highly recommended for anyone that enjoys macro work!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for shooting jewlery I shoot jewelry with this lens. I was able to get really close while maintaining a focused shot. It definitely made the angles and jewelry more interesting. I highly recommend this lens for anyone that shoots little objects such as jewelry and insects.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good if you need to get in close This is a great lens If you have been frustrated trying to get in close with other wide angle lens due to minimum focus. Extension tubes are not an effective solution for many wide angle lenses. This lens lets you move in until the subject practically touches the front element, and you can still quickly focus out to infinity. I have gotten shots with this lens that were not possible with my other wide angle lenses and it opens up new possibilities. I really like that option and it is now one of the lenses I generally carry. That being said, if you are not into using your wide angle in very close, there are better options. It is a completely manual lens. I use it on a Sony A7r2 and while it works, it does take some time to setup a shot with correct focus and exposure. If I was just shooting scenery, I would use a different lens. But knowing that I can move in as much as I want, is very nice - and I am willing to trade that for speed and convenience - however it is not necessarily what everyone would choose.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Laowa 15mm F/4 Lens, Venus Optics I was a bit skeptical about this lens. As it's been turning out, the more i use it for wedding ring shots... I absolutely love this lens. I know I have a lot to learn with using this lens. Yet i am quite impressed so far. A bit of a challenge to use at first but it does take a little time to get comfortable in using. The image that i loaded up is what came straight from the lens with my Canon 5D mark 3. It was about 3/4 inch away from the flower with these rings inside of it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not suitable for architectural photography or full-frame As a full-time architectural photographer, I was drawn to the 15mm ultra-wide field of view, paired with the shift capability. Although my preferred focal length is between 21-24mm, sometimes wider is simply required. I ordered this lens directly from Venus Optics and paid for expedited shipping. Their customer service, along with the lens build is great. Unfortunately the lens performance is very disappointing. I certainly did not expect the quality of the Canon 17mm TS-E, given the price was sub $500. That said, the edges are downright blurry, making it unusable on a full-frame body, as far as architecture is concerned, where everything needs to be tack sharp. The shift mechanism is stout, but incredibly difficult to operate...very frustrating. The lens is promoted as a macro, and using it as such will render the background/edges soft anyway, so it's probably fine for that application. The problem is that it's promoted as an architectural lens as well. The rear element is far too small to capture sharp edges, with or without shift applied. Even on a cropped sensor, it looks soft. Distortion is significant, leading to too much lens correction. The center is sharp. That's about it. If you plan to do macro photography, then go for it. Fellow architectural photographers, forget about this lens. I'm selling it ASAP.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun lens, worth it pros: sharp wide angle, 1:1 marco, shift lens, small and light. cons: note It's a shift lens not tilt-shift lens. Laowa 15mm can only shift the lens up and down, but can not shift horizontally and can not tilt. Which means you may use this lens to correct the deformation of tall buildings. However, since it doesn't tilt, you can not create the marco effect when shooting the wide scenes, and can not enlarge the depth of the field without changing the aperture. I haven't tested the marco yet because I don't have appropriate marco ring light yet. Since it's a wide angle marco lens, the subject is very close to the front of the lens and block the lights. Overall, it worth the price. Have fun with it!
