  • 1Description

Compact and very capable, the VC-310N Compact On-Camera TTL Flash from Bolt is fully compatible with Nikon's i-TTL system and offers a plethora of features for advanced on- and off-camera flash photography. The relatively small unit has a guide number of 105' at ISO 100 for easily illuminating a range of subjects as well as coverage for 28mm lenses on full frame cameras or 18mm on APS-C cameras. The included diffuser can soften the output of the flash while increasing the coverage to 17mm on full frame or 12mm on APS-C. For bounce capabilities the VC-310N can tilt from -7 to 90° and rotate left 60° and right 90° for more flattering lighting than provided by direct flash.

Another feature of the VC-310N is the ability to use LED lights to preview lighting and as a focus assist. This model can be used as a wireless master or slave with full TTL support in each mode. Stroboscopic mode is available for creative effects requiring multiple flashes during a single exposure for numerous possibilities. The ability to accept firmware updates via a Micro-USB port ensures compatibility in the rapidly changing digital landscape.

Coverage for 28mm lenses on full frame or 18mm on APS-C, when the diffuser is used it expands coverage to 17mm on full frame or 12mm on APS-C

    Bolt VC-310N reviews

VC-310N Compact On-Camera TTL Flash for Nikon Cameras is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great alternative to a pop-up flash I recently upgraded to a Nikon D500, and found that I missed having an on board flash more than I thought I would (it is especially useful as a fill flash on sunny days). While looking for a solution I discovered the Bolt VC-310N, given the specs and the price I had to purchase it. The unit is very compact but powerful for its size. The flash head rotates left and right and is fully compatible with Nikon's flash system (including commander mode). I have tried it for about a week, both indoors and out, and it really serves the purpose. It is small enough to pocket and raised enough to prevent shadows due to the lens. A very nice unit!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but not 100% same as Nikon I bought this flash because of its reduced size compared to other Nikon speedlights. It takes up much less space in my bag and is lighter making it good for travel. However, I found that it has Standard TTL but is missing TTL-BL mode. This is a serious difference, as it makes Fill flash much more difficult with the Bolt versus Nikon speedlights. When you have to use Standard TTL for Fill flash, you have to guess at how much negative compensation to set in, to avoid overexposure. This can take a couple of tries to get it dialed in. Basically, it slows you down and makes it easy to miss an important shot. Also, I noticed that the Nikon in-camera flash compensation is ignored by the Bolt. This means that you always must adjust flash compensation directly on the back of the Bolt itself. This is not a serious problem, but it is something you need to know about. All of the rest of the functionality of the Bolt seems identical to Nikon speedlights, and all-in-all it is a nice little flash.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Tends to Over-Expose I purchased this as an alternative (update) to my SB-400, but I find the SB-400 (Nikon) is much better and provides more accurate exposure. The Bolt VC-310N seems to over-expose at least one full stop in TTL mode.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Has Most Nikon CLS Features but not all I've had the Bolt VC-310N for about two weeks, and I've played with the most of the on-camera functions but haven't tried the wireless modes (because I don't wireless except in the studio where I have better choices). I will use the Bolt strictly on-camera when traveling with my D500 Camera. It is a very nice unit that takes up a lot less space in my bag than a Nikon SB800. It is a bit bigger than a Nikon SB400. It comes with a snap-on diffuser that works well for bouncing when the subject is fairly close, since it is not as powerful as the larger Nikon flashes. With the Bolt mounted on the camera, the TTL mode works well. However, the more advanced Nikon mode, TTL-BL is missing, so I guess it probably shouldn't be advertised as 'Fully compatible' with the Nikon iTTL system. TTL-BL adds Fill in high ambient automatically and is very useful. All newer Nikon flashes have both TTL and TTL-BL modes. In order to add Fill using the Bolt standard TTL mode, you must apply negative flash compensation on the back of the flash to avoid overexposing the images. I recommend -1.7 EV as a starting point. This is how we used to do it when the earliest TTL flashes first came out. These days, most pros use TTL-BL mode, which does fill automatically. I also noticed that the camera FEC (flash exposure compensation) does not change the Bolt like it does on Nikon flashes. You have to adjust the compensation directly on the back of the Bolt. The Bolt does have a white light focus assist lamp for situations where it is too dark to focus.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Value Not great but it gets the job done. I like it because of its size and shape. I fits in my camera bag without taking up too much room. Not professional quality, but well worth the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent new kid in the market I haven't use too much but I could say that it works perfect, has an excellent design, package presentation is professionally competent, just 2 AA batteries for power, good price. 5 Stars to Bolt VC-310N
