Bolt VC-310OP overview

  • 1Description

Compact and very capable, the VC-310OP Compact On-Camera TTL Flash from Bolt is fully compatible with Olympus/Panasonic's TTL system (except for E-M1 II) and offers a plethora of features for advanced on- and off-camera flash photography. The relatively small unit has a guide number of 105' at ISO 100 for easily illuminating a range of subjects as well as coverage for 28mm lenses on full frame cameras or 18mm on APS-C cameras. The included diffuser can soften the output of the flash while increasing the coverage to 17mm on full frame or 12mm on APS-C. For bounce capabilities the VC-310OP can tilt from -7 to 90° and rotate left 60° and right 90° for more flattering lighting than provided by direct flash.

Another feature of the VC-310OP is the ability to use LED lights to preview lighting and as a focus assist. This model can be used as an optical slave in manual mode and a stroboscopic mode is available for creative effects requiring multiple flashes during a single exposure for numerous possibilities. The ability to accept firmware updates via a Micro-USB port ensures compatibility in the rapidly changing digital landscape.

Note: Flash will not fit into E-M1 II shoe.

Coverage for 28mm lenses on full frame or 18mm on APS-C, when the diffuser is used it expands coverage to 17mm on full frame or 12mm on APS-C
Manual power settings are available with settings from 1/1 to 1/128
Recycle time of about 5 seconds at full power
Backlit LCD screen
Modeling flash setting will fire a burst of flashes for a preview of lighting
Flash exposure compensation from -3 to +3 EV in 1/3 EV steps
Second curtain sync setting allows flash to fire at the end of exposure for more advanced lighting techniques

    Bolt VC-310OP reviews

VC-310OP Compact On-Camera TTL Flash for Olympus/Panasonic Cameras is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Punches way above it's weight. I love the small size, light weight and high output of this flash. Highly recommended for any m4/3's user (sigh...and the poor sods trapped in bigger, heavier, less capable systems too, I suppose! ;) ) looking to reduce the size and weight of their gear whilst retaining functionality. I can so far see only two two improvements Bolt could make: 1. Replace the push button Power switch with slider or a toggle switch for faster engagement, and 2. Auto Sleep mode seems to be missing, although perhaps I am simply missing something here.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good flash for FZ1000 Handy size, range much extended over built-in flash. TTL exposure seems accurate. Included snap-on diffuser required for even lighting at widest focal lengths. User manual confusing about positioning flash for wireless slave mode; sensor faces same direction as flash but manual recommends facing it towards master flash (in my case, the on-camera flash) in direct line of sight. Indoors, wireless TTL operates fine with sensor facing away from camera by picking up reflected light from subject.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great but Quirky This is a great flash with great features! BUT... when placed on an Olympus OM-D E-M10, you have to power the flash on before mounting to the body's hot shoe. At that point, it works great in all modes. To turn off the flash, you have to remove it from the camera's hot shoe and then you can power it off. I got in touch with Bolt's tech support and stumped them. They said they've not issued any firmware updates on this flash and don't have any planned as of March 2017.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 3rd Bolt purchase After purchasing two VB-22s and two Cyclone DR PP-400DR Power packs, I got one of these as well, works perfectly, and bolt products are obviously very well-made and very reasonably priced, can't find a single bad thing to say about any of their products, they all work perfectly!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than advertised No complaints here - small, powerful enough and they work perfectly. TTL spot - slave modes simple and effective. Bought 3 use one on camera as a master the other two as slaves. Used in the field for macro and on location to add that touch of light to add depth to the subject. Small enough to always have in hte kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite MFT flash I really like this cute little flash- - Uses 2 AA batteries of which I have lots of rechargables, not AAA which I don't - Compact - Feature rich - TTL and optical remote manual mode, Strobe, Focus/Video light, elevation and rotation - Seems well made The Focus light works fine as low power video light, competitors claim that on theirs, not sure why Bolt/Mienke (it's the same) doesn't. I like the Nissin's also, but they are pricing themselves out of the market I think, and these are more compact anyhow. These are 1/3 the price. I may buy a couple more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good little flash Bought this just before Christmas, and used it with my Panasonic DMC-FZ1000. Packaging is first class; maybe indicative of the product's quality. Seems to work fine. Limited output as you would expect from 2 AA batteries power, but better than the pop-up on the camera. It doesn't stick up from the top of the camera, making the camera/flash package fairly compact. It comes with a diffuser like the Sto-Fen, and it helps to soften the flash effect but, again, as you'd expect, it cuts down a bit on the output. The head tilts upward and swivels sideways. It fits nicely in my small camera bag. Overall, a pretty good product. Haven't had it long so I don't know about the long term reliability.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just what I needed I wanted a flash with more power than the Panny G85 pop-up flash, but still be small, light and able to bounce vertically and horizontally. (The other problem with the pop-up is the lens hood casts a shadow on wide-angle shots.) This one checks off all of those, plus it's easy to use. It communicates well with the G85, on and off-camera, in TTL and manual modes. Using two batteries instead of four keeps the weight down, but I haven't used it enough to test the effect on battery life. It covers the full range of the 12-60mm lens: I've used it for 12mm shots with no visible drop-off.
