iOptron designed the Pink SmartStar Cube-A R80 80mm f/5 GoTo AZ/EQ Refractor Telescope as a simple, yet highly versatile, grab-and-go astronomy rig for beginners or advanced amateurs who want to go out for quick observations. The unique mount design allows you to set it up flat for use as a conventional alt-azimuth configuration, and if you want more precise tracking for astrophotography you can use the integrated wedge and a quick setting change on the hand controller to use it as a German equatorial mount.

The optical tube has an achromatic doublet lens system that is fully multicoated to produce bright and sharp high-contrast images with accurate color rendition across a distortion-free field of view. The relatively short focal length produces a fast focal ratio, which makes it ideal for imaging the sun (with proper solar filters installed), moon, and large planets. With the two included eyepieces offering low and moderate magnifications, plus the addition of an erect-image diagonal, this scope can be used as a traditional terrestrial spotting scope as well as for astronomical observations.

This handheld unit features a 130,000-object database, with 256 user-defined customizable objects for your favorite celestial bodies. The easy-to-use menu-driven system displays on an 8-line, 21-character backlit screen. This fully GoTo-capable unit has automatic tracking for fast-moving near-space objects, such as the moon and planets, and slower moving deep-sky objects like nebulae and galaxies. For setup or manual use it has nine slew speeds starting at 1x and topping out at 4°/sec. To make sure you get observing faster, the controller has multiple alignment procedures, plus a 32-channel GPS receiver that provides the mount with accurate date/time/location information. For improved tracking, the mount is equipped with digital encoders to program out periodic errors that might occur during long-duration tracking, and there is also backlash compensation to eliminate settling at certain points due to the gaps in the gears. The Go2Nova controller is powered by the mount to make use easier while reducing the unit's weight.

Supporting the OTA is the compact Cube-A GoTo Alt-Az mount. This functional, flexible, motorized, and computer-controlled unit features a unique dual-mount capability to allow its use as either a simple alt-az mount or as an equatorial mount with the integrated wedge on the tripod. It sports a compact mount design that measures a mere 8.75 x 5 x 5" while still offering you the convenience of a motorized computer-controlled unit for most stargazing duties. The low-profile housing eliminates "dead spots," enabling you to point your telescope to any point above the horizon, unlike other mounts that tend to block the telescope tube at certain points of rotation. This mount comes with a 110 VAC adapter to power it if you're near civilization, but if you're heading off the grid it can run on eight user-supplied AA batteries. In EQ mode, you may need to use a counterweight for proper balancing, iOptron offers a CW shaft and counterweight separately.

Optical Tube

  • 80mm aperture
  • Fast f/5 focal ratio
  • 400mm focal length
  • Air-spaced doublet refractor design
  • Achromatic lens configuration virtually eliminates chromatic and spherical aberration to produce images with accurate color rendition without distortion across the entire field of view, especially at the edges
  • Anti-reflection fully multicoated optics improve light transmission, image brightness, sharpness, color rendition, and contrast
  • Resolution: 1.4 arcsec
  • 1.25" rack-and-pinion focuser

GoToNova Controller

  • Easy-to-navigate menu-driven interface
  • Easy One-or Two-star alignment

  • Anti-backlash compensation to eliminate the play between gears
  • Periodic Error Correction (PEC) helps to correct errors in tracking over prolonged periods
  • Slew speeds: 1x, 2x, 8x, 16x, 64x, 128x, 256x (1°/sec), 512x (2°/sec), max 4°/sec
  • Four tracking speeds: Celestial, Solar, Lunar, User-defined
  • Large 8-line, 21-character LCD screen with backlit LED buttons
  • USB port for computer/ASCOM connectivity to use planetarium computer software or firmware updates via the Internet
  • Supports autoguiding through ASCOM protocol; optional equipment required
  • Supports compatible electric focusers
  • Works in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres
Database:
  • Galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, and the planets
  • 60 deep-sky objects with their common names
  • Messier catalog

Optical Accessories

Eyepieces:
  • 1.25" diameter barrel accepts most astronomical filters
  • 10mm focal length produces a moderate 40x power
  • 25mm focal length produces a low 16x magnification
Barlow Lens:
  • 3x power effectively triples the magnification of any eyepiece that is used with it
  • Increases magnification without affecting the eyepiece eye relief, making it an ideal substitute for high-power eyepieces when used with moderate focal length ones that will yield similar magnifications
  • 1.25" nosepiece and holder
Diagonal:
  • 1.25" nose piece fits most drawtubes and accessories
  • 1.25" holder allows the use of most eyepieces and accessories
  • 45° angle puts head in a comfortable viewing position when OTA is aimed at or near the zenith
  • Integrated erecting prism corrects the view to allow the scope's use as a terrestrial spotting scope
