Fluid Audio FX8 overview

  • 1Description

The black FX8 from Fluid Audio is a studio reference monitor, well suited for project and professional studio applications. The dual concentric or coaxial drivers feature an 8" low frequency woofer coupled with a 1.2" tweeter to deliver a phase coherent signal with an accurate off-axis response, resulting superb imaging and sonic clarity. The bi-amplified design delivers 130W of Class A/B power to the drivers, while the optimized front-loaded slot port directs the low frequency energy towards the listener and away from the wall. The speakers offer a frequency response of 35 Hz to 22 kHz for full range sound

The FX8 is magnetically shielded and offers balanced XLR, 1/4" / 6.35mm, and unbalanced RCA inputs to accommodate a variety of equipment including audio interfaces, monitor controllers, instruments, and DJ gear. The front panel offers a convenient fader volume to easily control the volume without having to reach around to the rear of the speaker. The amplifier includes a stand-by mode to help conserve electricity when not in use. The FX8 ships with an AC power cord and speaker isolation pads.

    Fluid Audio FX8 reviews

FX8 - 130W 8" Two-Way Coaxial Active Studio Reference Monitors (Single, Black) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice monitors I ordered the Fluid Audio FX8 monitors based on a lot of online research and reviews, and they definitely do not disappoint. The sound is pristine and responsive, no matter the volume. I like the power-save feature, and the monitors snap back on as soon as they receive a signal. I ordered the white ones from B&H, and they look very nice in my studio. The B&H order process was fantastic, as was the packaging and boxing - the monitors arrived in perfect condition. Thanks, B&H!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality for the $$$ I just purchased a pair of these for my son who started producing EDM over the past couple years. I've owned Events, JBL's and have also used a number of other studio monitors (Yamaha, KRK, Mackie). Currently I own Focal CMS65's. These Fluid Audio's hold up very well. I haven't spent a ton of time in front of them, but so far I'm extremely impressed. Side-by-side my Focal's, the high end was virtually indistinguishable. Since the Fluid's have a larger low end driver, they produce noticeably more bass. The bass sounds pretty tight and solid for an 8 driver. The build seems solid... they don't feel cheap and they have plenty of power. If anyone is looking for budget monitors under $700... or even $1000, you owe it to yourself to audition these. I don't think there's much, if anything, that can compete in their price range. Considering the price, quality, and sound, my early rating is 5 stars. Haven't found anything to complain about beyond a lack of frequency tuning... but I haven't found that to be a big deal if you're in a halfway decent/treated room.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely brilliant at this price These are really excellent monitors at a very attractive price--unfortunately for Fluid they seem to be a well-kept secret, at least in the USA. I am using them in a desktop arrangement, and they are perfect for my use case, which is occasional semi-professional production and (most frequently) pleasure listening. These speakers are very revealing throughout the mids and highs, provide adequate bass that is very tight and goes way down. The stereo imaging is phenomenal, which is (I presume) a function of the concentric design. I do not know how they translate to other equipment yet, as I haven't produced on them yet. But I am expecting good things based on what I'm hearing. The price point is really amazing for what you get, which is accuracy with a *very slight* warm bias. There are more analytical speakers, but these strike a good compromise to me. Since I am using these on a desktop as computer speakers I am really impressed by the smaller form factor--I don't think there's another 8 monitor pair that I'd try to squeeze onto a desk. I'm driving them with a Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 USB audio interface via balanced 1/4 TRS-to-XLR cables. As I was researching speakers in this price range I considered any number of excellent options in the $$range (for a pair). I had intended to buy at around $400 to replace a pair of Tannoy reveal 501A's (one of which has a bad amp--again--and is out of warranty), and at that price level I was really disappointed with all the compromises. Notwithstanding, at the bottom of the range I really like the Equator D5's on paper, but I have not actually heard them. Like the FX8's they are a concentric design, and would probably be adequate. But--I really longed for a little more in the bass extension, and was therefore looking at 6-8 speakers. I don't think there's another option at the price of the FX8's that deliver as much. At the top of my range, at perhaps $600 per pair, there are a few more options. But are any of them better than the FX8's for my use case and audio aesthetic? I couldn't find any. After having a bad experience with the entry-level Tannoy's I have questioned the logic of having a nice heatsink on the amplifier inside a fully-enclosed box. That certainly spreads the heat out a bit, but doesn't do anything to get it outside the box. With the FX8's, the big-o heatsink is outside the box--that bodes well for the class A-B amps inside the box. Second, they enter a sleep mode after a few minutes of low signal, which conserves power as they say--but also reduces heat*time in those amp components. This also bodes well. And they have a 3-year warranty, which is at least adequate.Others have mentioned the sleep mode online, but I could not find any information about it in real use, so let me answer a couple obvious questions: It comes on after about 15 or 20 minutes, and when signal is applied, the speakers turn back on in less than a second. I find this to be completely acceptable. If they took 10 seconds to warm up, that might not work for my use case as computer speakers, but this is perfectly fine. Also, they don't need much signal at all to turn back on.If you're seriously considering these, I'd say, go for it. You can get better monitors, but I dare say not at this price. I feel like I stole them (at full price). To have something that sounds this good on my desktop is just sick.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SUPERB SOUND. SUPERB VALUE. uperb sound. Suberb value. I've recently bought in a pair of Fluid FX8's for double duties: As a stereo pair for critical listening/monitoring in an Edit suite, and as a side-surrounds in a 7.0 setup. Swapping my much loved KRK VXT6's for these was surprising - These are sonically superior in every way for AU$420 less! I really think the FX8 is perhaps the best kept scret in studio monitoring anywhere near this price point. I've heard many other monitors going for far more money that don't give you so much. These may deserve a place in the history books! PLUSES: * Superb stereo imaging. * Similar voicing and accuracy to the famous KRK VXT series, noticeably better fidelity and response. * Coaxial design works supremely well and allows for smaller size, compared to other 8 monitors. * Front bass ported. * Usable down to around 35Hz as claimed. * No need for a subwooofer. * Also available in white (which is arguably better looking & more striking). * Level slider on the front is handy. * LOTS of A/B power. * External heat sink at rear. * Excellent connectivity. * Stand-by mode is handy. MINUSES: * Power switch at the front would have been nice. * No trim controls for highs, mids or lows. * No DSP as with Fluid's FPX7, but you wouldn't expect it at this price point, and sonically doesn't seem to suffer without it. * Very minor noise floor.
