Aputure LS 1/2w Overview

  • 1Description

Featuring a slim, 1"-thick profile, the Light Storm LS 1/2w from Aputure is a compact LED fixture that includes a dedicated controller box, which accepts Sony V type batteries for convenient, portable power. While sleek in size, the LS 1/2w is characterized by an impressive CRI of 98, along with a 120° beam angle and daylight-balanced 5500K color temperature. Aside from affording convenient battery power to the LED, the included controller box also enables wireless dimming control using the included remote, and four groups and three channels can be employed for quickly switching between different looks.

The Light Storm LS 1/2w also features durable aluminum alloy housing along with the incorporation of 264 unique SMD LEDs to offer a greater effective lifespan with maintained color quality. A manual yoke provides versatile positioning and the light control separation design, afforded by the controller box, also maintains a low center of gravity for easier placement of the fixture and easier switching of batteries during use. Additionally, ten sheets of diffusion paper are included for producing a softer, more diffuse quality of light.

Features
  • The light's design incorporates 264 individual SMD LEDs, which enable a longer lifespan, lower brightness decay, a broad beam angle of 120°, and a high CRI of 98.
  • Daylight-balanced 5500K color temperature.
Included controller box features a Sony V battery plate for convenient, portable power. An AC/DC cable is also included for AC power.
The controller box, which features two 90° antennas, also permits wireless dimming control using the included 2.4 GHz remote. Four groups and three channels are also available.
  • DMX512 protocol is also supported for wireless control.
  • Aluminum alloy construction is both durable and sleek for use in a variety of conditions.
  • Manual yoke allows for variable positioning.
  • Ten sheets of acid-free, smooth surface diffusion paper is included to broaden the light quality, reduce the output to 85%, and provide an effective 180° beam angle.
  • A LEMO-style connector is used between the controller box and light fixture for convenient, one-handed installation and removal of the included connection cable.

    Aputure LS 1/2w Reviews

Light Storm LS 1/2w LED Light with Sony V Battery Controller Box is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best light quality. I have an i1 Pro with custom software (that I wrote) to measure the spectrum of light (as well as cri, color temperature, etc). I attended Photoplus looking for LED lighting with the cleanest spectrum, and these lights were the best I found. Smoothest spectrum (no strange color shifts or dropouts), and a cri around 98 (measured). Also, the entire rear of the light is a heat sink, so continual running of the lights won't result in color or brightness shifts. Also, these lights are really bright.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Portable LED light on the market right now! I am just going to echo everything above. This light is a beast! Super bright, V mount powered for location shooting, durable, professional connections, lemo, XLR, V mount. and the price! I also have the full size LS1 and it is just as amazing as this light. I highly recommend the new lightstorm line from Aputure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small but big Used for filming a conference in a banquet room and one of these small lights filled the room pretty well. Provides wide light. Super light and clean. Great light. I highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely worth the money! Even though this is the 1/2 light version it is more than cable of casting light in a wide area. Also the color temp is beautiful! Great light!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unreliable Just after a year from purchase and after very light use, this fixture started intermittently turning off during shoots. This makes for a very unprofessional situation. After contacting Aputure CS my option was to send it to China at my expense to and from and pay for repair. There was no offer to help with shipping or repair fee. I can’t count on this product for professional shoots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Light! I LOVE this light. The build quality is phenomenal as its mainly aluminum. The few bits of plastic are all high quality. The LED design in this light give a really wide beam of light compared to regular LED panels. This lets you light up a room without having to pull your panel back. This also makes it brighter (being closer) and softens the light. The CRI is very high so you won't have any weird color tints from cheaper units. The whole back of this panel is a heatsink allowing them to put more LED in this light and it stays cool. The control are separate from the panel so you don't have to lower the light to control it if you have it mounted high. It also comes with a remote that allows you to control multiple groups of light that works really well. If you want to see it in action do a search for Max Yuryev Light Storm and you'll find the video. I would definitely recommend this light!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm on welfare and I can afford this excellent light. Being on welfare is tough. I have to make sure every dime is not wasted. I needed a light that could perform yet still be affordable. The Aputure Storm fits my criteria - and then some. I shoot with a Red Epic and I can pretty much get any look L want with this light. I have two music videos and a commercial with it and the results have been outstanding. Since I get paid under the table I have to make sure that the client is happy enough to pay me cash and without a receipt. The Aputure storm delivers!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from highly recommended I really like this light. Build quality is great, output is extremely bright and accurate, and the remote control is a great feature. The only drawback is the silly paper diffusion sheets they provide with the light. Yeah, they work, but are not durable. A much better solution would be to provide a proper diffusion panel that slips into slots on the frame of the light. I wish they included an tungsten gel, too. Otherwise, this is a great light.

    question

Which is brighter, this or Fiilex P360EX??
    Asked by: Yasuhiro U.
Based on the lux ratings for each light when placed at 3.2 feet, the Fiilex P360 would measure 1710 lux while the Aputure Lightstorm LS w measures 1100 lux. With that being said, the Fiilex P360 would be brighter.

    question

Can anyone recommend a padded carrying case that will protect this product and it's OEM accessories for ground transportation? I do not need a Pelican case for this as I have a 1610 trunk that I want to a padded case into. Thanks.

A case to consider would be the Impact LKB-R1 Light Kit Roller Bag #1 (Small, Black) B&H # IMLKBR1 which can hold an Aputure Lightstorm LS unit with accessories. Please see the image below for reference.

    question

What is this light designed for? Back light, fill, key?
    Asked by: Thomas
The main benefit of the Aputure Light Storm LS 1/2w LED Light (especially for an LED light panel) is its extreme wide 120 beam angle. It is a bright light fixture for its size and the number of bulbs on the unit, but it will not be as bright as a full 1x1' panel. As such, it would be best when you are working in tight spaces and you need a bright light with a wide beam angle for maximum coverage. The wide angle of view would make it good to place behind your subject for illuminating the background, or you may use it close to your subject in a small area as a key light, or pull it back slightly for use as a fill light, adjusting the output to your desired level. In larger rooms, it most likely will not be used as a key light, and would work better as a close fill light option. Due to its slim design, working in small areas like vehicles, tight rooms, or narrow hallways would be perfect for this light fixture. How it will be used would be determined by your shooting area and your lighting needs, as people can find creative uses other than those stated above, but that is how I would use the above fixture for my usage needs.

    question

    What Watt Is this?
    Asked by: Yasuhiro U.
Unfortunately, Aputure does not measure the output of this light in terms of watts. What they do offer is the lux rating which is 4000 lux at 3.3 from the subject.
