Rollei Retro 80s overview

  • 1Description

Rollei's Retro 80S is a slow-speed panchromatic black and white negative film with extended near-infrared sensitivity to 775nm. This additional red sensitivity helps to cut through haze or fog and also smooth skin tones and blemishes, making it ideal for portraiture. It has a nominal sensitivity of ISO 80/20° and is characterized by a fine grain structure and broad tonal range. It is coated onto a transparent polyester base, with anti-static coatings, that makes it well-suited to scanning applications.

This item is one 36-exposure roll of 35mm film.

Rollei Retro 80s reviews

Retro 80S Black and White Negative Film (35mm Roll Film, 36 Exposures) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tones I just really like the tones and behavior of this emulsion. When it disappeared I was so excited to see it return to this store. It may be a uncommon speed but it was perfect for landscape photography.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for beginners This intriguing film shares characteristics with microfilm, right down to the polyester base and low base+fog density. In general-purpose or semi-compensating developers it gives a very steep development gamma resulting in excessive contrast for many scenes. It gives beautiful midrange separation resulting in crisp micro-contrasts and fine detail, but shadows are apt to drop out altogether, high values to blow out. You need to find the right subjects for this emulsion, then expose and develop it carefully. I like it, but it's not a general-purpose film.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible film! I decided to try this film based on nothing more than a handful of very positive reviews (and perhaps the Rollei reputation), and it was a risk worth taking. The film is sharp and contrasty with very fine grain. At ASA 80 it's not an all-purpose film, but for very specific applications (architecture on a reasonably sunny day, for example) I'm not sure there's anything better. Give it a try.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp and contrasty. My 3rd favorite black-and-white film (after HP5 and FP4). Super-sharp and very high contrast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Portrait Film This film has extremely fine grain. Unlike many slow speed films, the highlights do not block up, so subtle skin tones are easy to achieve which is why I like this film for portraits. The base of the film is very thin, which can make it a bit difficult to work with. However, the thin base yields a sharper print and scans well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very interesting film I developed this in Xtol 1+2 (8 minutes at 75 F) and found that it has a high mid-tone contrast with low contrast in the shadows and highlights. The speed worked out to ISO 64 based on middle gray (not the normal FB+fog plus 0.1 density speed point). This film can be used creatively wherever you don't mind losing some shadow detail. You will have fun discovering when that works for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great stock for B&W reversal slides The super-clear base makes it perfect for reversal slides. For print making I have found it challenging to get even exposures in the enlarger because the contrast is so high. Even so, it has very soft grain while being high-contrast. Could probably have good results if you account for this and use the film's characteristics to your benefit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new fave! Excellent film overall. Love the contrast. Negatives look amazing, with really good clarity. Clear film base makes scanning a breeze. Yes, you can blow out the highlights with it if over-expose, but set it to ISO 64 and you will get great results.
