The GK3532-82QD Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Gitzo features Carbon eXact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The tripod has a load capacity of 44.1 lb, extends to a maximum height of 68.9", and folds down to 30.1" for storage and transport.

The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 11.4". Its 3-section legs are secured with G-lock Ultra twist locks, which feature internal O-rings to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg positions. A ballast hook on the bottom of the center column allows the user to add additional weight, increasing the tripod's stability.

The included Gitzo Center Ball Head is an Arca-type compatible head that features two separate locks; one for 360° panning and another to control the movement of the ball. A tungsten disulfide coating on the ball helps keep the ball movement smooth and minimizes stick-slip. A screw-knob lock tightens down on the included quick release plate and a bubble level helps you maintain straight horizons in your images. A friction control dial has also been integrated into the large locking knob to allow for more precise adjustments.

Gitzo GK3532-82QD Mountaineer Series 3 Tripod... Reviews

Nice, Sturdy Tripod

I have owned this tripod for four years now and it I feel it has been an excellent investment. The only knock I have against it is if you unscrew one of the sections too far the leg will fall apart and it's not intuitive on how to put it back together. It happened to me once and I had to watch a YouTube video to figure it out. That aspect could definitely be designed better. I have mainly used this tripod for wide-field astrophotography and it is capable of keeping a star tracker steady just fine.

The legs are good, the ball head is questionable

The legs are the usual Gitzo legs and feel solid. The center column is removable, but it can't get as low to the ground as some other designs due to the collar and ground level adding an extra ~2 1/2 inches to support the center column. Without the center column the legs weigh ~3.8 pounds, which while heavy, is still readily hikeable, as well as being high enough for my purposes. People that are 6' tall will likely want to keep the center column installed. They come with Gitzo's rubber spike feet. Note: I have had the one of same feet fall off my 3-series Systematic (user error somehow?), so I think it's worth it to buy a spare set just in case. Replacement feet do not come with this tripod. The included GH3382QD ballhead is another story: it is large, heavy, and comes with a low-profile quick release plate that is *not* Arca-Swiss compatible. Based on other reviews I bought a spare plate just in case, but the head is so large and heavy I'm planning on keeping it at home in case my RRS BH-40 breaks. The plate itself does not include any friction elements, which makes me concerned about the attached camera sliding around and getting scratched unless I torque the screw down excessively. It's a poor design for such an expensive piece of equipment and could easily be fixed with some cork or rubber, like tripods 1/10th the price frequently include with their built-in quick-release plates. The included center ball head simply does not fit with the way I intend to use this tripod and I cannot recommend it. A full set of tools is included in case you need to disassemble either the tripod or the ballhead, which is a nice touch. Stick with the GT3532 legs alone unless the GH3382QD ball head fits your needs or you get the GK3532-82QD combo on a sale that makes it worth your while.
