DJI CP.PT.000168 overview

  • 1Description

With the Phantom 3 Standard, DJI introduces 2.7K ("UHD") aerial video acquisition to the Phantom line. Its dedicated camera is mounted via a 3-axis motorized gimbal that stabilizes the footage and enables manual tilting from a dial on the controller. The control signal operates on 5.8 GHz, plus there is a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi downlink for live 720p video monitoring and app-based control using DJI's free GO app. Thanks to a Wi-Fi range extender, the Wi-Fi boasts a range of 3280' line-of-sight. GPS equipped, the Phantom 3 Standard sports the assisted flying features, such as automatic return home, that have become staples of the Phantom series. Thanks to redesigned, more efficient motors, flight times of up to 25 minutes are possible.

A ready-to-fly-quadcopter, the Phantom 3 Standard comes prepackaged with the basics to get your started: a radio controller (transmitter), flight battery and charger, two sets of props, a mobile device clamp, 8GB memory card, and more. As will all multi-rotors, be sure to follow all pre-flight calibrations steps to ensure correct operation of the navigation system before hitting the skies.

Performance

Redesigned Motors
New motors introduced with the Phantom 3 Standard feature higher performance relative tyoto their weight. Curved DJI electromagnets are used to spin the motors at high, controllable speeds - all by using magnetic force, without any physical contact, to increase durability

Intelligent Flight Control System

GPS-Assisted Autopilot System
GPS integration enables enhanced stability and a provides a number of assisted flying and full autopilot features, such as return to home, Intelligent Orientation Control (IOC), and and Point of Interest (POI) lock.
Return Home
With GPS enabled, the Phantom 3 will remember its takeoff point and automatically return to the pilot if the control signal is ever lost.
Auto Hover
After takeoff, it automatically hovers in place, waiting for your command. It then changes altitude or direction at the flick of a finger. When you want it to stop, it again pauses and hovers, waiting for your next instruction

Gimbal-Stabilized 2.7K Camera

Up to 2.7K Video and 12MP Stills
The included camera system features video recording at up to 2.7K (UHD) video in H.264 and also takes JPEG and DNG RAW photos at 12MP. In addition, it shoots Full HD 1080p video at up to 30 fps and 720p video at up to 60 fps. Video and photos are recorded to a microSD card
Integrated 3-Axis Gimbal
The gimbal provides stability by counteracting unwanted motion such as wind buffeting or vibration and also keeps the horizon level even as the quadcopter banks. A control dial on the transmitter (radio controller) allow you to manually tilt the camera
94° Wide Angle Lens
The camera features a 94° angle-of-view lens, which is a narrower angle than a fisheye for less distortion while still being wide enough to enable capturing establishing shots. The lens features an f/2.8 aperture and is comprised of 9 elements, including an aspherical element

DJI Go App for Remote Operation and Live Monitoring

Tether your iOS or Android mobile device to the Phantom 3 Standard to view a live feed from the camera, access camera settings, enable waypoint navigation, and more. The controller features a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi range extender and includes a clamp for holding a smartphone (included mobile device holder does not support tablets)
    720p Video Downlink

    DJI CP.PT.000168 reviews

Phantom 3 Standard with 2.7K Camera and 3-Axis Gimbal is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 133.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun Drone, read the downloaded user manual if unfamiliar The product does not come with a full manual, it has to be accessed from the DJI website or through the DJI Go app. The app has a good landing feature, but if used at low altitude, the craft will fly up to the predetermined safe height instead of landing from it's current altitude. So watch out if trees or obstructions are above when using the landing software. Left controller sticks when pressed down, which I think is a landing feature in this model that works well, but first few times when landing, the craft suddenly flies sideways on the ground damaging the propellers. I can never get the compass to calibrate. DJI support is no help. Recommend to buy the propeller guards.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to fly, great value Why buy a drone that cannot shoot 4K? Because it is only $. I bought this to learn how to fly with the assumption that I would buy a more expensive model later. I probably will but this one does what I want right out of the box. DJI has clearly had time to work out any bugs and add requested features. It is actually easier and safer to fly than the toy I had previously. I can easily get shots that previously would have required both a dolly and a jib. Only down side so far is the flimsy smartphone holder.Be sure to buy extra batteries for the drone and a sunshade for the smartphone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Drone First RC Flying Model I am an amateur photographer with an interest in video. A friend showed me his DJI Phantom - I fell in love! The video was amazing! I bought one from B&H about 10 days ago. Today was my maiden flight. No Crashes No Problems. I am a total noob when it comes to RC Model flying, I was impressed that I could fly this without crashing it! I started with automated take off and landing. It worked! I practiced with the flight simulator on the app before the flight. I was able to take off and land manually. Easier than I thought! Video quality is excellent! Great drone for a great price! Dick F

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to learn Ready to fly right out of the box. Well, you'll have to charge the batteries. And read the directions. And register with the FAA. But, it's easy to learn on your first time out. I recommend staying about 12 inches from the ground until you get the hang of the controls. When your drone turns around, your controls are now backwards. Take the time to practice. It will pay off. I do not recommend using it near water until you are an expert. The first few times you may need to bring it down fast and hard. It says you can fly in 20 mph winds but I wouldn't take it out in more than 5 mph. It can be really difficult to control. Make sure you know the laws (on FAA.com) and know where the airports are.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! This is my first real quadcopter. I've owned many toy quality copters over the years. This thing is awesome! It may be the low end of the Phantom 3s, but it is loaded with quality. The camera is crystal clear HD and the gimbal is stabile and precise. The GPS holds the machine as solid as a rock even in a breeze. The auto takeoff and land features are practically fool proof. I love the DJI Go app and it gives you everything you need to be in complete control of the craft. I took amazing videos and pictures on my first flight as if I had been flying it for years. I love this Phantom 3 Standard!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I would say 3.5 to 3.75 stars This isn't my first camera drone. I am a fairly experienced drone operator. For the money, it is a 5 star device as compared to the other drones. However, when rating this on its own, I can't give it that high of rating for a few concerns. I will go over some of this quads many positives first. A. The complete camera control through the DJI GO app is utterly amazing. You can control not only when to snap a picture, or video segment, but white balance, where the exposure metering is taken from, etc. B. The 3 axis gimbal is rock solid! C. There is plenty of detail in the 2.7K recordings. In my opinion, it looks BETTER than the Phantom 3 Advanced in 2.7K mode. D. The price. DJI is really trying to make the bottom or the drone market fall out in their favor. It is pretty amazing what they charge for this, considering what a Phantom II, Vision Plus cost. Cons, A. This camera suffers badly from purple fringing. I am sure it is the same in all editions of the quad. Whether it be the Standard, Advanced, or Pro as they all three have the same lens. You can remove a lot of the LOOK of it in post, but it is there all the same. B. DJI is known for constant software updates. While the procedure to update this seems less archaic than the one for both the Advanced, and Pro, it is still very time consuming and irritating. I had to toggle back and forth between wifi routers to get this done. C. The link from the quad to the Smart Phone, will lock up. After some experimentation I am sure it does this for me because the ram on my phone gets filled up. Once it is full, the app stops communicating with the quad. Once this happens, I can run my Ram cleaning app, and it will reconnect. Video is more prone to do this than pictures. Conclusion: All of that said, I do not regret my purchase. The future of drones is really uncertain. More and more there are state parks that outright ban them. They are already banned in National parks, so that the places you would like to fly them are off limits. That being said, I think it is a good idea to spend as little as you can on drones. With this one, you don't pay a lot, but you will likely get enough for your needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unbelievable!!! Amazing!!! I could not believe how easy it is to fly this drone. I was a little skeptical to buy it and afraid that it would just be a waste of money. The photos and especially the videos are excellent. I took my time reading and watching videos before I start to fly this drone. I own big copters with HD videos that I had to regularly adjust for stability when flying but not this drone. DJI is very stable to fly and the photos/videos quality are just amazing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Starter Drone First things first: this drone is a steal. For the money, the Phantom 3 Standard comes packed with more features than you could ask for. What I liked: Out of the box, everything works as it should. Calibration was quick and we were flying within a few minutes. In the air, the Phantom 3 Standard responds well. It even managed some high speed winds like a champ; with less than 8 satellites it seems to drift a bit but nothing I couldn't manage. The battery life is as expected: 25 minutes on the dot. The DJI Go app is fantastic and very intuitive. I played around with some of the different flight modes with the Phantom 3 Standard and was blown away. I don't have enough time to thoroughly cover them but trust me, they're awesome! What I was iffy about: The video quality isn't the greatest, but that was expected considering it uses a different sensor than the Advanced and Pro. My biggest problem is that, even at 2.7K, there is very little detail if you crop the image at all. Really, there is no point. I'm used to shooting with the URSA so I may have had my standards set too high. What I didn't like: You read about trees being a danger to drones... and they are, but not in the way you might think. I've never had an incident where I have come close to colliding with a tree. I mean, really, I don't see how it's possible if you any common sense. But... trees are can be quite a problem. I found that if I were to fly behind a tree, even if it's within 50 meters, I would lose video feed almost instantly. Then I would get a notification that the controller has lost connection. This is incredibly frustrating as the drone then starts to return to home and, if you don't have your RTH altitude high enough, it may just head back into the tree. I've flown in several different places; in the city and countryside. Reception varies depending where you fly and this is my next issue: the streaming quality, signal strength and maximum distance vary GREATLY in different conditions. In the middle of nowhere without any interference, I can get the Phantom 3 Standard about 700m away before losing video (although it's quite choppy at this point). Luckily, you can still fly using GPS. However, if I'm in the city near housing, the Standard only gets about 300m away before RTH kicks in. Pretty much useless thanks to the Wifi. Dealing with signal loss and video stuttering is the main reason I am moving onto the Inspire 1 Pro. The Phantom 3 Standard was a great starting unit and performs greater than I could have expected for the price I paid, but I need something more reliable and something that has better video quality. I don't like that I can see the props in the shot if I'm flying forward with the camera pointing to the horizon. Even with a 2:35 crop. I've uploaded a few more samples here, if interested: http://imgur.com/a/y35kv
