LG WP50NB40 Overview

The Slim Portable Blu-ray/DVD Writer from LG is a lightweight, Windows and Mac compatible optical drive that features a maximum BD-R read and write speed of 6x, a maximum DVD±R read and write speed of 8x, and a maximum CD-R read and write speed of 24x. It also has playback support for 3D Blu-ray media as well as read and write support for M-DISC. Additionally, this drive supports a variety of other formats, including BD-RE, BD-XL, DVD±RW, DVD-RAM, CD-R, CD-RW, and more. This broad range of formats allows you to select the media best suited for your needs.

This drive is also equipped Silent Play and Jamless Play, as well as a 4MB buffer to help prevent under-runs. A USB 2.0 cable is included for connecting and powering the drive. A Windows Blu-ray drive install disc with added software is also included.

it does a good job but found it had to use mainboard usb 3.0 to work well. it is slow on blueray but reads and writes without errors if on the rite usb plugs.

Just updated my desktop to brand new HP running Windows 11 Home. Love the new HP but it came without an optical drive … and maybe I’m old fashioned, but I still want one to load software/drivers and play dvds and music. This LG drive installed and operates flawlessly .. and the bundled software is excellent. Don’t hesitate with this one … easy buying decision … winner!

Nice product with easy setup and a nice suite of software. Initially it wouldnt play a Blu-Ray disk but after updating the software it played perfectly. The drive is also very quiet compared to others Ive used.

So what's the final verdict? Does this unit write Blu-rays to a mid 2012 MacBook Pro running El Capitan? I've already tried the LG BP 60NB10 that I bought on Amazon and was not successful with this. That model also would not play a homemade DVD.

Yes, the LG Slim Portable Blu-ray/DVD Writer BH #LGWP50NB40 can write Blu-ray discs on a Mac 2012 running el Capitan, however, they would only be Data blu-rays. If you want to make blu-ray discs to play on a blu-ray player, you would need additional software.

All of the Pioneer DVD players/burners I own are Region Free natively (no need to hack anything). Is this player Region Free? I have DVD's from all around the world and I don't want to have to deal with a computer player that can not play DVD's/BD's from any region.

Yes, this player/writer has region protection. After using it multiple times on a specific region it would lock to the corresponding location.
