Most backpacking canister stoves don't work well in cold weather, but the Vega Remote Gas Canister Stove from Optimus is designed with a difference: it connects to its fuel supply with a hose, so you can flip the LP gas canister upside down. That allows the fuel to be delivered as a liquid instead of a gas, so the stove works even in below-freezing temperatures. The hose connector has fold-out legs to support the inverted canister as you cook.
The cold-weather fuel option can also be used as a turbo cooking mode in milder weather. The Vega's maximum output in efficiency mode is 4,760 BTU / 1,400 watts, but with the canister inverted in four-season mode, it will produce up to 12,580 BTU / 3,700 watts.
Unlike stoves that screw onto the top of fuel canisters, the Vega has a low center of gravity and is highly stable. Its legs lock into place to support cooking pots up to 8.5" in diameter and 8.8 pounds. The flame control knob, located on the canister connector, allows you to precisely adjust the heat for your cooking. A two-position windscreen protects your cooking flame from the breeze.
The stove will run up to 160 minutes on an 8-ounce canister of fuel at peak efficiency-mode output. Boil times are 4.5 minutes for a quart of water in efficiency mode and as little as 3 minutes in four-season mode. Folded, the stove measures a pack-friendly 5.1 x 2.8 x 2.6" and weighs 6.3 ounces.
