Zoom F8 overview

  • 1Description

The Zoom F8 Field Recorder & Custom Protective Case Kit from B&H comes with everything you need to get started at building a professional field recording rig. The package includes the Zoom F8 Multi-Track Field Recorder and the custom PCF-8 Protective Case.

  • Zoom F8 Multi-Track Field Recorder

The Zoom F8 Multi-Track Field Recorder is designed for professional and enthusiast recording applications on set and in the field, including music, filmmaking, and electronics news gathering (ENG). Designed to be carried by a shoulder strap or in a bag, the unit features eight analog input channels with lockable XLR/TRS combo jacks that provide +75 dB maximum input gain, and support for +4 dB inputs with an EIN of -127 dBu or less. It can record up to 10 tracks simultaneously (channels 1-8 plus a stereo mix), or up to eight channels when recording at the A/D converter's maximum 24-bit 192 kHz resolution.

Alternatively, you can perform dual-channel recording of separate files at lower volume levels to ensure you have backup recordings to use when unexpected loud noises distort the primary recording. A newly designed limiter provides up to 10 dB of headroom. The unit supports SMPTE time code input and output. Included in the outputs is a powerful 100 mW + 100 mW headphone jack, as well as the MAIN OUT 1/2 and SUB OUT 1/2 jacks so you can send the audio signal to a video camera or other device while monitoring with headphones.

The unit's internal mixing capability enables flexible routing, and the inclusion of individually selectable +24V/+48V phantom power ensures you can use your favorite condenser microphones.

Power to the recorder can be supplied in one of three ways: via AA batteries, an AC adapter, or a 9 to 16V external DC power supply. Two SDXC card slots can be used simultaneously for recording even longer sessions, and can also be used as card readers when connected to a computer via USB.

When operating via USB, the unit can be used in a 2-in/2-out configuration as well as an 8-in/4-out audio interface (driver required for windows). A built-in slate mic allows you to make voice memos and the unit's slate tone can be used to confirm specific levels.

Among the most innovative features of the recorder is support for the company's interchangeable microphone capsules.

Zoom F8 reviews

F8 Field Recorder & Custom Protective Case Kit is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent field recorder I needed more than 4 XLR inputs on a recorder, so I took a gamble on the Zoom F8. Coming from a Tascam DR-70D, the Zoom F8 feels positively luxurious. It's built solidly and looks like it can take a beating. The audio quality is fantastic, and it's super easy to use, with intuitive menus and button layouts, and a crystal clear full-color display that's easy to read. It's great being able to be powered via A/C adapter while also having batteries inside the unit as a backup in case the A/C power gets cut off for some reason. Dual SD card recording offers peace of mind. I can't really think of any negatives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound for indie films I have been a fan of Zoom products for years. Before purchasing the Zoom F8 I used a Zoom H6 for recording while filming independent films. I was very happy with the ease of use and the sound quality. But the F8 is a big step up into professional field recording, with features and capabilities only available in units costing five to ten times more. This product is built to show Sound Devices that you can build a premium quality recorder for less. Much much less. Did they do it? Yes in my opinion. It's one of the best purchases I have made in the last 20 years of buying studio and field equipment form B&H.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Recorder. Lame Case. The Zoom F8 recorder is perfect for my uses as a professional engineer who does some field recording for sound design on the side (using a wide assortment of mics). It has all the features that I need along with impressively solid construction. It sounds great, and the iOS remote app is a nice addition. The accompanying Zoom PCF-8 case, on the other hand, is poorly designed and awkward to work with. It doesn't balance well when fully loaded, and the construction doesn't seem like it would hold up to heavy use. Cable routing options (or lack thereof) are a mess. I was very close to attempting to exchange it for a better bag from Orca or PortaBrace, but for the price it should serve my needs in the short term.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Field recorder First day of using the F8 on a short film. Step up from the Zoom H4n that I usually use. This unit is fantastic with clean transparent sound with my Rode mic and comparable to recorders/mixers costing thousands more. Time code, headroom to spare, light weight, perfect for the semipro or pro sound-man/filmmaker!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small wonder This is an ideal field mixer recorder for documentary filmmakers or small budget films. First it is tiny yet it can handle multiple tracks. it is not simple to use. You have to access the menu many times before you can make changes in the settings. If you do not know much about sound mixing or sound recording, you are going to have a tough time. The device does produce great sound and does offer many features similiar to very expensive professioanl mixers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great recorder! Several days after buying it I was called on to boom a documentary. So learned the F8 quickly and through a trial of fire. Filmed 4 Location ranging from outside, a small room, and a car. Using a boom, and three wireless lavs. Everything worked great! The device does seem to eat through AA's our takes were around 45 min each. The batteries just lasted the day. The director loved the sound quality, along with the Sennheiser mkh 416 the boom audio quality is great. For the price I highly recommend this recorder!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy another again. If you do audio recording on location, you need to buy one of these F-8 field recorders. I use this to record 4-5 piece rock bands live performances onto 8 discrete tracks that can be mixed down in post production using any DAW. The F-8 is a great time and extra equipment saver. No external AC needed; plug in your Mic's and direct boxes, turn it on and start recording 8 tracks for the next 4 hours all on AA battery power. I plan on buying an extra battery pack holder soon; easily swapped in the field in about a minute, then you can go for another four hours. Terrific little unit. I also purchased the Zoom custom protective case for my F-8. The case is well thought out for use with the F-8. It is very rugged, easy to use and very high quality. Short of a catastrophic flood; it will keep the F-8 dry if you get caught in a rainstorm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good... I'll be using this for field recording and podcast production, perhaps video as well. Just started working with it. Pre-amps seem very quiet. Menu is a bit complex, with multiple levels needed for many adjustments. Just upgraded firmware to v2.0, which was very simple. So far, it seems like quite a bargain compared to other multi-track field recorders with similar specs.
