Vello OCS-FAC Reviews

Sturdy and versatile

Even with all the vertical and horizontal adjustments on hot-shoe- mounted flashes, it is still limiting. The source of the flash always emanates from the same position. The Vello Flexible TTL Rod adds maneuverability for creating flattering shadows and highlights. It is also very sturdy in maintaining any position you select.

So, when I bought this I was thinking, how clever. You can in fact, bend the very stiff and sturdy rod in any direction you want to place your flash directly above your lens for verticle or horizontal shooting. Well.. it's sturdy but, not that sturdy, as the weight of my canon flash is a bit too much for this product. Guess if you are very still and do not move the flash might stay in place. Chalk this one up to.. great idea on paper. Fact is, this rod is very sturdy, just not quite sturdy enough for a heavy flash

Well made, Heavy duty

I bought this for macro work. With it I can position the flash head of a 580 EXII about 6 out front of my Canon 100mm L macro lens, or about 2 out front of its attached hood, and 45 degrees offset left or right, which is about ideal placement for a macro subject, with room for diffusion material. It looks very well made and durable. However, I am concerned that this amount of weight and lever arm could put too much strain on the camera's hot shoe, without some type of secondary support for the flash. Camera bodies being expensive to repair, I recommend proceeding with caution.

Vello Light Stalk is a sleeper

This is a 15 light stalk Flash flexible extension for Nikon or Canon. I found it to be a real good way to get that hand held flash look away from the front of your camera so you can get the off camera effects that are harsh from the top hot-shoe. This unit is sturdy and does the trick that helps get light to a macro subject that most strobes miss because the light can not be directed properly to the subject. Not with this guy. It's perfect for the macro or portrait person.

It Works Fine

It seems to do the job for which it is intended. I'd really like to see someone makes a hand grip system like Vivitar had for the Vivitar 283, 285 system, where the grip easily detached from the base to allow you to hand hold the flash out away from the camera. That worked great!.

Much better than I anticipated

Great addition for Macro and off camera flash. more substantial and better constructed than I thought it would be.

Sturdier than expected

Was pleasantly surprised this feels much stronger than expected. The info with it suggests then camera and flash both need to be held in use but I've tried with 430 and 600 and no problems - I wouldn't toss them around, but they should be fine.

question

A flash bracket is typically quick to rotate from horizontal to portrait mode. Is this too stiff to bend without putting pressure on the camera hotshoe? Thanks.
Asked by: Syed
In a fast moving situation, I agree with the previous comments: use a flash flip bracket. This is a very useful tool (macro work, weird shading for ultra-wide lenses to protect them from flare and stray light, etc.). It is stiff enough to hold flashes, etc., but I wouldn't want to use it without being able to take care in terms of putting excess pressure on a hot shoe. Hot shoes aren't meant for that use, really - they're meant to provide an electrical connection and trigger. Any other use is gravy and or risking your gear. Good luck!
