Panasonic DMW-SFU1-VLOG overview

  • 1Description

Maximize the dynamic range of the Lumix DMC-GH4, DC-GH5, or DMC-FZ2500 with this V-Log L Function Activation Code from Panasonic. This code, which is delivered on a physical card, allows you to easily install the V-Log L gamma onto the camera, giving you a flat profile that provides a wide dynamic range of up to 12 stops, improving upon the range previously attainable with the GH4, GH5, or FZ2500. The addition of this gamma also allows users to better match color with existing Varicam systems that feature standard V-Log, as both profiles utilize the same characteristic curve and LUT. Additionally, the profile has been developed to have similar characteristics of Cineon, which is used for film digitization.

Updating your camera is a stepped process similar to updating your firmware; although, you will need this activation code along with your camera's serial code to generate an upgrade key from Panasonic's Update Portal. This upgrade code is also region specific and is designed to work with cameras distributed in the USA.

Panasonic DMW-SFU1-VLOG reviews

V-Log L Function Activation Code for DMC-GH4, DC-GH5, and DMC-FZ2500 is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 112.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Profile This is a solid addition to the GH4. The V-Log profile allows for another level of grading in post, however it isn't without its limitations. If you're ordering this however, you have probably already done your homework so I don't feel the need to repeat it all here. However just to point it out, it seems that you need to overexpose your shots by about 1 to 2 stops, and also the lowest ISO for the profile is 400, just a heads up. Prepare your ND Filters. Anyway, I'm still happy I ordered it, though it is definitely over packaged for being just a single sticker of importance. I'd like to see Panasonic cut down on the wasteful packaging.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Awesome Difficult to get usable video with the 8 bit codec recorded internally in natural lighting conditions. Macro blocking takes on the color of cotton candy. Image falls apart when grading or pushing it. Use an external recorder or use in appropriate or controlled lighting situations. Theoretically flat and gradable. Takes some time to find a good LUT and establish a consistent workflow. Not advisable to use unless extra dynamic range is a must or matching the log curve of other production equipment.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good to have but don't really need to use it This is a nice addition to the GH4. It's very wonderful how much Panasonic is making an effort to be generous to us video and filmmakers. Especially when it comes to the GH4. However, as nice as this addition is, I find that it's not really perfect. It does provide more dynamic range and more room in color correction...but learned all to late that it's better used when recording to an external recorder rather than internally. I record internally and do not have an external recorder as of yet. Therefore, I can't really get any extra benefit from V-Log L at the moment. I'm glad I have it for future use but, for the moment, I'll stick with Cinelike D.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from V-Log Worth Every Penny Pros: V-Log is amazing it is worth every penny and saves you lots of time. Using V-Log allows me to match the Footage from my GH5 and GH4. Making my life a lot easier when it comes to color correcting. I utilize Davinci Resolve for color correction and the ability to apply a LUT to all the footage makes post production work a lot easier. Cons: The only downside of purchasing V-Log is that they have to ship the Code to you Via Mail. I find it disappointing in an age where you can email people files that you have to wait for the V-Log code to arrive in the mail taped to a piece of paper. Note: I was Entered into a Drawing for a Gift Card. However that doesn't have any reflect on my review.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A major leap in colors 1 month ago I wanted to sell my GH4 that their color was not very bright. This is a personal taste only. As I could not sell my camera, I decided to buy this software with the intention of selling post better or see if it was true what they said in the forums about a substantial improvement in the image. I must say that is a great improvement, now I love the image that gives me this GH4, I will not sell it and instead will buy lumix lens to work more comfortable (used only canon lenses with adapters) I am really very happy to see what it has become my new camera GH4. do not be fooled by the antiquity of this camera, the v-log software makes it to life, better color reproduction and better treatment in the software final cut. Very very happy to have made this purchase !!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great to have V-Log. Why Snail Mail? This is a strange one. You literally pay around $100 bucks to have a black, sealed envelope with a number snail mailed to you. Once you get that number you offload the serial number from your camera to an SD card, upload it to a website, match it to your special number, and get a new file you put back on your SD card that unlocks v-log. The process is fairly straightforward. The snail mail thing is why I am subtracting one star. I needed v-log fast for a shoot that came up and instead had to wait 4 business days to get it. Kind of weird in this day and age. But the bottom line is if you want professional 10-bit log footage out of this camera, this is how you get it! PS - this works for both the GH4 and GH5

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product, poor delivery method. Pros: Adding the V-Log function is a must have for anyone serious about video. It works just like it should by adding an additional 2 stops of DR. Cons: Besides the fact that it should have been a standard feature from the beginning, the main issue I have is how the code is delivered. The code comes shipped via snail mail in a box taped to a piece of cardboard. This is something that could easily be delivered digitally and redeemed immediately.
