ZEISS 50mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

The Canon EF mount Milvus 50mm f/1.4 ZE Lens from ZEISS pairs the normal-perspective focal length with a complex Distagon optical design in order to achieve notable image quality, even when working with the fast maximum aperture. The lens construction incorporates four anomalous partial dispersion elements and one aspherical element to control chromatic aberrations and distortions for notable clarity and sharpness throughout the aperture range. A floating elements system is also employed for consistent performance when working with both near and distance subjects. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in difficult lighting conditions.

Its manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. Additionally, Milvus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable frosted, anodized metal lens barrel surface along with a weather-sealed construction to protect against dust and moisture.

This 50mm f/1.4 lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF mount DSLRs, and can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 80mm equivalent focal length
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also enables extensive control over depth of field.
Complex Distagon optical design features four anomalous partial dispersion glass elements and one aspherical element to benefit performance when working with wider apertures. This design also significantly reduces chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and sharpness.
Floating elements system maintains consistent performance when working with both close-up and distant subjects.
Enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating controls ghosting and flare for high contrast, color-neutral imagery.
Manual focus design is benefitted by laser-engraved focusing and depth of field scales, along with an IR position dot and hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.
Weather-resistant construction includes internal seals to guard against dust and moisture as well as a blue sealing ring at the lens mount to protect the lens-camera interface.
All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

    ZEISS 50mm f/1.4 reviews

Milvus 50mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A typical Zeiss Experience If you've used Zeiss lenses before, than you know about the experience. This is manual focusing optimized ! The lens is designed and made beautifully. All metal - there is a heft to it; not bothersome. It actually feels great in hands, even when mounted on a 5D iii. The rubber focus ring is very well-damped. The operation is extremely smooth, just as expected. The lens is sharper wide open, much sharper than my 50L is at f1.4. The colors and the micro-contrast are very pleasing. It has very little distortion. Some vignetting, typical for any large aperture lens, but easily correctable in post processing if you don't like it. All in all, a great Milvus, and for me, a preferred alternative to the Otus 55. 50mm is my favorite focal length on a FF body, and this will remain my favorite 50 for years to come. Highly recommended !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Milvus 50 mm is a very fun lens to use. This lens is very sharp and if you are a fan of manual lenses this is one to own. From my perspective this is a much better option than the Otus 55 mm; just as sharp, a fraction of the cost, and despite the similar weight the shorter body provides a much better balance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected. This lens is by far better than any of my canon lenses. It's actually much sharper and clearer than I had hoped for. With a Canon 5dsR, I needed a lens that produced enough resolution to match the quality of the body. The manual focus feels like a right of passage to connect myself with fine photography.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this lens The perfect 50mm lens for Canon, sharp as you would ever need, beautiful rendering and bokeh, heavy but a good balance on a 6D with a battery grip. I've always preferred manual focus, makes me feel more involved in the process than autofocus. My 3rd Zeiss lens, more in my wish list including the Milvus 85mm f1.4. B&H service superlative as always, why buy anywhere else?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expectacular!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get it to believe it This is my second Zeiss lens (after the 15 mm). The results I got from the 15mm got me interested in the 50mm. The results from this lens incredibly beautiful, sharpness and bokeh just stunning. If you are comfortable with manual focusing, this is a must-have.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Almost a very good lens The good: Heavy duty, sharp, smooth focus action. An overall very good lens. The bad: The copy I got would not focus to infinity. It has a hard stop, which is great, but the factory set it too early. The focus ring needs to continue a little past the hard stop to be in focus for distant (infinity) objects. I returned it to B&H for a refund. I may give one of the Milvus lenses another try when Zeiss gets the QC down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Quality This lens has incredible optical and mechanical performance. I plan to purchase more of the Milvus series based on my experience with this lens so far.
