ZEISS Milvus 85mm f/1.4 Overview

A prime portrait-length lens characterized by its complex Planar construction, the Canon EF-mount Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZE from ZEISS features a fast maximum aperture along with a unique spherical design to produce especially smooth bokeh for selective focus applications. The Planar design incorporates seven anomalous partial dispersion glass elements to nearly eliminate chromatic aberrations and other distortions for clean, well-corrected imagery. A floating elements system is used, too, for consistent performance throughout the focusing range, in order to achieve even sharpness and clarity. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

The manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. Additionally, Milvus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable frosted, anodized metal lens-barrel surface along with a weather-sealed construction to protect against dust and moisture.

Short telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 136mm equivalent focal length.
Impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Planar optical design affords high sharpness and consistent performance throughout the focusing range to suit photographing at a wide range of imaging scales.
Seven anomalous partial dispersion elements are used to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
Unique spherical design produces an especially smooth quality of bokeh to benefit portraiture and selective focus applications.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 2.6' to infinity.
Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales along with hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.
Weather-resistant construction includes internal seals to guard against dust and moisture as well as a blue sealing ring at the lens mount to protect the lens-camera interface.
All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

Okay, silly question: If I purchase the milvus 50mm 1.4 and mount it on my APS-C, will I get a similar/close rendition as the Milvus 85mm on full-frame? Any thoughts, experiences? Or how's about the 85mm Milvus on an APS-C?
Asked by: Henry
Can you explain further what you mean by "similar / close rendition"? The primary difference will be the angle of view. There is a good explanation on the B&H Explora site, which you can read at: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/content/field-view-how-your-lens-and-sensor-collaborate

question

Would it be correct to assume that the clicks aperture control on these lenses applies only to the Nikon mount, not the Canon?
Asked by: Thomas
The canon version does not have an f/stop ring and the Nikon version does. The Nikon version also comes with a tool so you can convert the f/stop ring to de-clicked.

I love Zeiss lenses & currently own milvus 25mm & ...

I love Zeiss lenses & currently own milvus 25mm & APO Sonnar 135mm lenses. I currently have Sigma 85mm Art lens & thinking of buying a Milvus 85mm or Sigma 105mm Art lens & sell 85mm Art later. I shoot portraits using live view, so manual focus is not an issue. From purely optical quality perspective, which lens is the better in terms of bokeh, color, micro contrast, sharpness an subject separation ability?
Asked by: manoj
My recommendation is to rent the lens and compare. Many of the attributes you call out are subjective and cannot be measured / compared between brands. The only way to know for sure is a side-by-side comparison using the same camera, lighting and subject matter.

How does the Otus 85mm differ from the Milvus 85mm?
Asked by: Richard
The ZEISS Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F and the ZEISS Otus 85mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F are very similar in terms of image quality; the Otus has a very slightly more realistic rendering of skin tones and is slightly sharper, but they are really quite a bit alike in most ways.
