ZEISS 85mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

A prime portrait-length lens characterized by its complex Planar construction, the Canon EF-mount Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZE from ZEISS features a fast maximum aperture along with a unique spherical design to produce especially smooth bokeh for selective focus applications. The Planar design incorporates seven anomalous partial dispersion glass elements to nearly eliminate chromatic aberrations and other distortions for clean, well-corrected imagery. A floating elements system is used, too, for consistent performance throughout the focusing range, in order to achieve even sharpness and clarity. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

The manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. Additionally, Milvus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable frosted, anodized metal lens-barrel surface along with a weather-sealed construction to protect against dust and moisture.

Short telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 136mm equivalent focal length.
Impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Planar optical design affords high sharpness and consistent performance throughout the focusing range to suit photographing at a wide range of imaging scales.
Seven anomalous partial dispersion elements are used to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
Unique spherical design produces an especially smooth quality of bokeh to benefit portraiture and selective focus applications.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 2.6' to infinity.
Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales along with hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.
Weather-resistant construction includes internal seals to guard against dust and moisture as well as a blue sealing ring at the lens mount to protect the lens-camera interface.
All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

ZEISS 85mm f/1.4 reviews

Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! For starters, I would never have considered getting a manual focus lens. I happened to stop by a vendors table at Shutterfest last month and tried one out on my 5D3. I was hooked and had to buy one. For starters, it is SHARP! And the bokeh is as beautiful creamy as it gets. The colors, contrast, and low CA are amazing. In my opinion, it is noticeably sharper than my canon 70-200 2.8IS and my sigma art 50 1.4. And truth be told, I got used to the manual focus. obviously you don't want to be shooting moving subjects, but for portraits it's just fine. Trust me it's worth it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lens ever I use this lens mostly for portraits. The quality of the image makes me wanna cry: details, colors, bokeh, everything is just perfect. The lens is solid like a tank. And it looks beautiful. The only two cons: - the focus confirmation on my Canon 6D (you know that there is no auto-focus here, right?): sometimes it's not accurate and you may get some blurred shots. But it's been less than a month, maybe I'm just getting used to it. - the weight. Man it's SO heavy. If you are using it with a flash on camera, good luck. But I really love it. Best lens I have ever used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best lens I have ever used. It is truly an amazing lens. The color in the pictures are so rich and vibrant it looks as though they were processed in Lightroom. I read once that the only complaint people had with the Zeiss lenses is that they make the images look too good. I now understand what they mean the quality and the color of the photos are above reproach. I love the fact that the lens is weather sealed I had it out in a big snow storm and captured wonderful images. I plan on getting many more lenses in the Milvus line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible optics from the best glass in the world! This line of Zeiss lenses rivals the Otus line at a fraction of the cost. Optic truths revealed within this heavy, yet beautifully manufactured lens. I love the images it produces. It has that punchy, contrasty Zeiss look with great color rendition and nice bokeh. Be careful shooting wide open at f/1.4. You may only get one eye in focus on a persons face if they are not perfectly squared off with the camera. I've learned to stop down a bit when shooting faces. It's excellent for portraits! Heavy to handhold, but you get used to it. It might be best for some to use a tripod or monopod for support. Also, it is a manual focus lens. Keep that in mind when purchasing as they are not for everybody. I am used to manual focus and prefer it in some instances, but occasionally wish it had AF. I did buy a Zacuto Z-Finder Pro for my Canon 5D MarkIII with the 3.2 screen bracket for this lens and find it very much worth the money. You will have a difficult time fine focusing using the optical viewfinder and will probably need some sort of magnification loupe to see your image better. The Zacuto Z-Finder Pro is a little bit expensive, but it easily detaches and hangs around your neck when you don't need it. I highly recommend it! I was torn between buying the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens and the 85/1.4 Zeiss Milvus, but I can say that I made the right decision. I am very happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatest! ZEISS Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZE lens The ZEISS Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZE is a very good lens. The color reproduction is really outstanding with ZEISS lenses. I just sold my 3 (three) SIGMA art lenses because I could easily see that the ZEISS offers superior color quality. If you want real professional results go with the ZEISS products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great solid lens! I was hesitant purchasing the manual focus only lens, but after a week or two, it has become second nature to focus myself. I've owned the Canon 85mm 1.2 II, which was fun to have, but now I love this lens! The sharpness is great, and the bokeh at 1.4 is something a little different that I am getting used to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Manual focus much more fun I love this lens the moment I put my hand on it. At first I can't believe how heavy it is when I pick it out from the box. My 24-70 is heavy but this one is much more heavy for the it's size. Before I order this lens i did try some manual shooting on my 50mm canon lens but it's hard because you know the lens has its auto fucos on it. But now that I have this lens and been use it for a month now focus is even more fun to do. Up until now I still can't get over of how good the end result of this lens make. I have canon 50mm 1.2 canon 135 f2 which I love so much now this one. Now to mention the build quality. And by the way I love the weight of this lens I consider it as an image stabilizer. You better be a little strong if you handheld shooting with it on a 5d3 plus 600exrt it's going to a little heavy. I don't have to recommend it because if you are reading this comment I assume you are a pro and know that this lens are not for amateurs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Zeiss, a step above them all This lens will blow the Canon 85 f/1.2 out of the water. Color, bokeh, and build quality for less money. I love the manual focus it really brings back the art of framing.
