ZEISS 50mm f/2.0 overview

  • 1Description

Pairing a normal-length perspective with an impressive 1:2 maximum magnification ratio, the Nikon F-mount Milvus 50mm f/2M ZF.2 from ZEISS features a floating elements design to ensure consistent image quality when working with both close and distant subjects. Inspired by the classic symmetrical Planar optical design, this lens is capable of achieving well-corrected imagery with controlled aberrations and distortions. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and flaring for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in difficult lighting conditions.

The manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. Additionally, Milvus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable frosted, anodized metal lens-barrel surface along with a weather-sealed construction to protect against dust and moisture.

Normal-length prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Ideal for macro shooting, this lens offers a half life-size 1:2 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 9.4" to suit working with close-up subjects.
Bright f/2 aperture helps to achieve a more compact, portable form factor while also remaining versatile for use in a variety of lighting conditions.
Planar optical design affords high sharpness and consistent performance throughout the focusing range to suit photographing at a wide range of imaging scales.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range.
Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales along with hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.
Manual aperture ring has clicked indicators throughout aperture range. Using the included De-Click Tool, this ring can be mechanically 'de-clicked' for smooth, silent rotation throughout the aperture range; making it ideal for video applications.
Weather-resistant construction includes internal seals to guard against dust and moisture as well as a blue sealing ring at the lens mount to protect the lens-camera interface.
All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

ZEISS 50mm f/2.0 reviews

Milvus 50mm f/2M ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another winner Zeiss did not disappoint. Image quality is everything it is suppose to be and slightly more. Others have commented that the lens is heavy, but it seems to have really good balance. It also give that solid, confidence feeling that counteracts my occasional bumping of equipment--it will hold up. The focus ring is incredibly smooth and appropriately sensitive throughout the range. I don't use macro very often, but I'm glad I picked this one over the f1.4--just playing around with that feature can be fun. All in, high quality, solid construction, sizable but well balanced (on the D810 and D5). I wonder for value, does this trump the Otus line?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality all around Really liking this lens, both for optical quality and for its construction as well. This thing is built like a tank and feels like it was carved out of a solid block of metal. Very (!) smooth focus feel, with a decent amount of focus throw to help in precise manual focus. Solid lens hood feels like it is an extension of the build quality of the lens, rather than a clunky add-on. Image quality and bokeh also appear to be first rate across the frame, at both near and far distances. This is a great all around lens. If there are any negatives to be had, it would be the size, which is pretty large for a 50mm f/2, but the build quality and performance are more than a trade off for this small negative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Zeiss 50mm f2.0 zf.2 lens a work of art I had the older model and sold it several years ago and regretted it after reviewing some of the images it had produced. I recently bought a used Milvus 50mm f2.0 zf.2 lens in beautiful shape and its even better than the older model. Made like a tank and very easy to focus. The Milvus is water resistant with a rubber seal on the mount and seals inside from the weather where the older model is not. The Milvus also has the same optical design, but better flare resistant due to the lens coatings. I do have the 1.2 magnifier for the eyepiece on my d810 which helps manual focusing a lot. I need no fine tuning on the Milvus to get sharp images. This lens and the Zeiss 100mm f2.0 zf.2 older model lens I have will never be sold. Larry

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Milvus has left the building....it's on my camera. I just got this lens today and I am *very* happy with it thus far, truly a work of art. I am a professional commercial photographer and I bought the new 50/2 Milvus mostly for food and lifestyle shoots that I have been doing for years, I feel the F2 aperture will allow for great effect on high end cuisine, the deeply recessed front element will be fantastic for backlit lifestyle. The build is incredibly good, not oppressively heavy and thankfully the hood stows away in reversed position, I was not sure if it would due to the new design. The aperture is about the best I have ever felt and I have lenses from Leica, other Zeiss and plenty of Nikon Manual. The focus action is fabulous, being totally consistent throughout the entire range. The sharpness is simply as good as it gets, only showing slight color fringing in the most challenging of lighting. I have a Nikon PK-13 extension tube on order so 1:1 performance remains to be seen but a star test showed it to be well above average at infinity with some coma only in the very corners. The lens balances nicely on both my D810 w/ grip and my D750. This is a killer lens that just begs for as many megapixels you can throw at it, I can't wait to use it on a paid shoot. Oh, not that it is my first consideration in buying tools like this, the lens is flat out gorgeous.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not good but superb Build quality is just superb, with well dampened focus ring, weather seals, it reminds me what the premium would be. This lens easily creates truly crisp images even aperture at wide open. Incredibly better at f4-8. Vignette is very severe at f2 but it still has many details in it, so images can be lost-processed if necessary. Reproduction ratio 1:2 is quite useful with this focal length. Manual focusing is not that difficult thanks to the focus ring and focus aid at camera body. It is always hard to justify the extra cost comparing to other 50mm f1.8 AF primes, but this lens holds its position as a masterpiece.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful lens, one caution This is a wonderful piece of glass that delivers great images. I'm very happy. I do have one word of caution, however... but it won't keep me from giving the lens 5 stars. The caution is that you really need to leave the lens hood on all the time ... Without the lens hood in place, you can pop off the lens cap very easily. You'll lose it if you carry your camera and this lens without the hood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lense I made a good choice on milvus 50mm. Very sharp photos, as so far I have taken very few photos with d800. The result is better than Nikon 2.8 24-70mm. I also carry 21mm. Waiting to take more pictures on D5.
