Sony PXW-FS5 overview

  • 1Description

Bringing a smaller, handheld form factor to Sony's line of digital cinema cameras, the PXW-FS5 XDCAM Super 35 Camera System captures UHD video using a Super 35mm-sized sensor for cinematic imagery. Though small in size, it incorporates professional features that differentiate it from consumer and DSLR/mirrorless cameras and make it suitable for use on productions as diverse as cinéma vérité-style documentaries, reality TV, and commercial and corporate applications. The included 7x zoom lens covers APS-C-sized and Super 35mm-sized sensors, features optical steady shot image stabilization, and has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 27 to 158mm.

The camera's E-mount is machined from stainless steel and allows you to use E-mount lenses or accept most 35mm lenses with the use of adapters, including PL, EF, Leica, and Nikon lenses. The camera records in your choice of XAVC-L or AVCHD. It incorporates two SD media card slots that support simultaneous or relay recording. Outputs include both HDMI and SDI and Sony's proprietary Multi-Terminal. The body also incorporates an Ethernet connector, headphone jack, and XLR audio inputs. All connectors and card slots are covered to protect from dust incursion. The camera supports Wi-Fi and NFC functionality, allowing you live stream from the camera, or control it from a wireless device. A paid upgrade allows you to record 4K and 2K RAW to an external recorder.

The 4K Super 35 EXMOR sensor features approximately 14 stops of latitude and a wide color gamut. It offers a choice of XAVC or AVCHD codecs. The XAVC codec can be used for 4K and HD recording, while MPEG-2 is limited to HD recording. The XAVC Long allows you to encode from HD to UHD using Intra-Frame or Long GoP compression with 10-bit 422 for HD and 8-bit 420 for UHD.
The PXW-FS5 is equipped with an E-mount machined from solid stainless steel for stability and strength. It accepts E-mount lenses from Sony, Zeiss, and other manufacturers. The shallow flange distance allows you to mount most 35mm lens types, such as PL, DSLR, and legacy SLR lenses, including Canon EF, Leica, and Nikon as well as many others with mechanical adapters.
The camera includes an ergonomic handgrip that Sony calls a SmartGrip, which features Zoom, Start/Stop and Assign controls. The SmartGrip facilitates camera operation with the right hand, leaving the left hand free to operate the lens. The handgrip can be positioned at different angles permitting greater flexibility.
The camera features two SD media slots that support simultaneous or relay recording. One of the two SD slots also accepts Memory Stick-type media.
All input, output connectors feature covers for dust protection; this applies even to the DC input and LANC connector. The media card slots and Multi-Terminal are likewise protected from dust by a swing away door.
The camera includes a removable top handle that incorporates a second XLR 3-pin audio input that compliments the 3-pin XLR input incorporated into the body. Both audio inputs feature a selector switch for line/mic/mic+48.
The top handle allows you to attach the LCD viewfinder to the camera, providing you with a choice of using the camera's built-in EVF, or a larger LCD viewscreen. Audio level control is on the main body of the camera and offers automatic gain control.
A built-in, electronic, variable ND system allows you to dial in anywhere from 1/4 to 1/128th ND filtration in the camera body, allowing you to eschew the use of optical ND filters. The variable ND also features four preset positions; off, 1/4, 1/16, and 1/64.
One SDI connector provides HD 10-bit 422 output. In addition, one A-type HDMI 2.0 provides 4K and HD output. Both the SDI and HDMI ports can output REC trigger and TC following Sony's established transmission method.
The PXW-FS5 records to XAVC-L QFHD 8-bit 420 (up to 30fps) and HD 10-bit 422 (up to 60fps) internally.
The PXW-FS5 has Simultaneous-Recording capability with Individual Rec Trigger. Mirror or back-up recording is possible. There are two Rec s/s buttons: one on the camera grip, the other on the camera handle. The target SD card slot for each trigger is assigned in the Recording Menu.
The PXX-FS5 is capable of simultaneously recording proxy files with the same name and time code as the main recordings.
The camera has a built in Wi-Fi capabilities that enables live streaming to PCs, tablets, and smart phones. When using content Browser mobile, the user can even control the camera wirelessly. One (1) Ethernet connector located on the rear panel of the camera provides robust connections when a reliable Wi-Fi link is not available.
Recorded movie files can be transferred via network to a designated FTP server. The following file format is available for FTP:
XAVC Proxy files
XAVC-L recorded files (4K(QFHD) & HD)
AVCHD files (only m2ts stream files)
RAW Upgrade
A paid upgrade allows you to record 12-bit 4K and 2K RAW to external recorders. This supports 4K up to 60p and 120p for 4 seconds to the camera's buffer. You can also record 2K up to 240p to an external recorder without being limited by a buffer limit.

  • Zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27-158mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives.
  • Constant f/4 maximum aperture enables greater consistency throughout the zoom range and benefits working in dim conditions with longer focal lengths.
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization works to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps to benefit shooting handheld in dim lighting and with greater zoom magnifications.
  • Two extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness and clarity.
  • Handycam technology is used, along with a floating axis design, to provide smooth, quiet zooming performance that is well-suited to movie recording.
  • Internal zoom and focus design helps to maintain a constant lens length with a non-rotating front element to support use of polarizing filters.
  • Zoom lever allows greater control over the speed of zoom using either variable or fixed-speed settings.
  • Separate, dedicated focusing ring permits direct manipulation of focus and gives way to separate power zoom and manual focus controls for greater precision.

    Sony PXW-FS5 reviews

PXW-FS5 XDCAM Super 35 Camera System with Zoom Lens is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 40.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good camera but Sony service not good At my studio we have 3 of the cameras and have been very happy and impressed with them. See Phillip Bloom's review to get a feel for all of the advanced features. That said, after a year and the expiration of the warranty, the dial for making menu selections was malfunctioning so we had to send it to Sony. It was out of commission for more than a month with spotty communication from them (sometimes good, sometimes nonexistent). The repair cost us over $400 which seems extreme for replacing a small part. So I'm giving a low star rating to reflect unhappiness not so much with the product but with product support.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this camera. I purchased this to replace my full frame DSLR, and it's completely revolutionized how I film. My favorite aspects of this camera are: 1. Great size. Fits in my Ronin-M perfectly. 2. Built in variable ND filters and Iris adjustment are extraordinary for daytime shooting. 3. 240fps HD. Nuff said. 4. Image is VERY crisp. 5. Having access to most of the controls quickly and easily along with autofocus, and face-follow make this an amazing run-and-gun camera. Notes: Native ISO is 3200! Shooting in Slog3 may look grainy, but it won't once you color it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Whew! Best decision.... I am a small woman. As an independent documentary filmmaker, broadcast quality and price were 2 major considerations. After weeks of research I was down to a few contenders, but after going into the store and playing around with the Sony it ticked all the boxes. One can go up ones proverbial wazoo with worries about colour bit depth for post production etc, and at some point you have to say enough is enough. To my joy the decision was validated for me when I heard my old film school just ordered a batch of these for their Documentary course. The features are as great as stated, and specially good for me is the ergonomic side hand mount, beautiful to hand hold and move around. Also loving the depth of field. Now to create good stories!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Great Camera Trapped in Some Constrains There are some really good things about this camera: battery life, the use of SD cards, the weight, the dynamic range and the great variable ND. The handle is great. High speed is useful and the buffer recording is enough for me. Although I accept that Sony can't put everything in one camera, I'd really like to have 4K (and not only UHD) and 60p at that. The Codec is ok. Some extra customizable buttons would be really helpful. What really puts me down about this camera is the menu: It is much like the FS700 (which I hated) and really seems amateur in some ways. The way the image looks in the LCD justifies the hate for the Sony video look, but - at least in Slog3-Sgamut combo - can really get beautiful in the editing room.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No external monitoring or simultaneous record in 4K The good: The ergonomics are perfect. I've never shot handheld with a more comfortable camera in my life. The images are superb. The design of the camera, magnificent. The Bad: This zoom lens is horrible. I suspected that it would be but I bought it anyways so I have no one to blame but myself. Judging focus through the EVF is a constant battle. Peaking seems to make it even worse for me. Autofocus is responsive but only under extreme run and gun circumstances would I ever use it. I have a metabones on order. The Deal Breaker: If you record 4k internally, you are not able to connect ANY monitor either through SDI or HDMI without losing both the EVF and LCD screen. So if a client wants to see what you are shooting and you also want to see what you are shooting, you need to loop through another monitor for yourself to attach to the hot shoe mount. If you record externally to a shogun or similar device you can have both but you can't record internally as a backup. For all of the hoops and extra expense you have to incur, you're better off getting an FS7 which doesn't have these issues. I'd send it back but sadly I just discovered this issue and I'm outside of 30 days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome camera Wish I had skipped the kit lens. Best images and control with old Canon glass and Metabones Speedbooster. Love dialing in f-stop and using ND filter. Love record time and battery life. Viewfinder seems like a fatality waiting to happen. Cheap. Viewfinder is good. Menu use easy. Buttons easy. Handgrip smallish. Best camera purchase since Canon 5D Mrkiii many years ago. Definitely getting 4K raw upgrade. It was decision maker between FS7 and FS5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a joy to use I'm a long-time Eng style news photographer, and it takes me several years to save the money for a new camera, but I'm very happy with the PXW-FS5. The small form factor makes it easier to hold and sling around when you're running and gunning, which is what I mostly do. It looks great. I especially love the variable ND filter. It's so useful, I see they added it to a new version of the FS7. The adjustable hand grip is so easy to use.I really wish there were a few more programmable buttons. The kit lens is just ok, but works well right out of the box. It's not full 4k, but QFHD, which is fine with me. I'd buy this again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for weddings and events Yesterday I got to use my new Sony Fs5 on an all day wedding shoot. Beforehand after reading many skeptical online reviews I was honestly thinking of returning it and dreaming about a new (perfect upcoming camera) which may never exist? I.E. amazing low light performance, 5 axis stabilization, 10 bit 4-2-2 color and 4k 60p.(Sony are you listening?) However the footage I got all day in 1080 XAVC-L was stunning!! The camera was easy to work with and from a bright sunny afternoon, colorful sunset to a dimly lit restaurant ( I used an on-cam LED) all my clips looked great. I am now happy with my purchase and looking forward to two more events this weekend. Thank You Sony and B&H
