Apple iPad Pro overview

  • 1Description

While the size of the gold Apple 128GB iPad Pro may be a bit daunting, its 12.9" Retina Display will quickly remove your doubts, thanks to its 2732 x 2048 screen resolution, 264 pixels per inch (ppi), and 5.6 million pixels. Supporting high resolution videos and photos, you'll be able to experience vivid colors and deep black levels. The Retina Display delivers greater contrast, more uniform brightness, and improved energy efficiency through photo alignment technology, oxide TFT, and variable refresh rate.

Powering the large Retina display is the Apple A9X chip with a M9 motion coprocessor. The 3rd generation 64-bit chip can pump out desktop-class CPU performance and console-class graphics. The faster performance allows you to multitask with ease, using iOS 9 features, such as Picture in Picture, Slide Over, and Split View. Also, the iPad Pro is capable of playing three simultaneous 4K video streams in iMovie.

The iPad Pro comes with iOS 9 installed, which features proactive assistance as well as powerful search and improved Siri features, all while protecting your privacy. There are multitasking features designed specifically for iPad which allow you to use multiple apps simultaneously, and built-in apps become more powerful with a redesigned Notes app, detailed transit information in Maps, and the added News app. The foundation of iOS is even stronger with software updates that require less space to install and advanced security features to further protect your device.

While the Retina Display of the iPad Pro features multi-touch capabilities, Apple does offer alternative ways of interacting with the iPad Pro. The Apple Pencil is an optional accessory that can capture twice as many data points as your finger for greater precision. Force and tilt sensors transmit precise information to the iPad Pro so you can intuitively lay down lines of varying thickness and opacity. The Smart Keyboard is another optional accessory that connects to the Smart Connector on the iPad Pro, which means you don't have to use Bluetooth. The Smart Keyboard has Apple's dome switches for precision typing.

An Apple SIM card is included, allowing you to select data plans from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and GigSky. Please note that Verizon requires you to purchase their own nano SIM in order to use their network.

12.9" Retina Display
At 12.9 inches diagonally, the Retina Display on the iPad Pro offers 78% more display area than that of the iPad Air 2. Under the glass lies a revamped Multi-Touch subsystem and 5.6 million pixels. With a 2732 x 2048 screen resolution, the iPad Pro provides sharp text, vibrant color, and deep black levels, making everything from photo editing to intense 3D gaming more vivid and engaging.
Photo Alignment
To improve on‑axis contrast, Apple used an advanced process called photo alignment. This involves shining UV light to create a uniform terrain across the film coating on the thin film transistor and color filter, so the display's liquid crystal molecules lie precisely where they should. Better‑aligned molecules mean you see better contrast when looking directly at the display.
Oxide TFT
The oxide thin film transistor in the iMac Retina 5K display has been adapted to the Retina display on iPad Pro. The resulting TFT provides faster pixel charging and better brightness uniformity across the larger canvas.
Variable Refresh Rate
The iPad Pro knows when the content on your screen is static and cuts the refresh rate in half, to 30 times per second instead of 60. This means that the screen isn't just big and bright; it's energy efficient too.
Timing Controller
The timing controller, or TCON, is the brains of the display. It tells each pixel what to do and when to do it. Since the iPad Pro has 2.5 million more pixels than the iPad Air 2, Apple custom designed the TCON to handle the greater resolution, giving it more bandwidth to allow lightning pixel control at fast speeds.
Portable & Lightweight
Despite having 78 percent more display area than the iPad Air 2, the aluminum unibody of the iPad Pro measures 6.9 mm thin and weighs just over 1.5 pounds.
Four Speaker Audio
The iPad Pro has four innovative speakers that produce a stereo soundstage as enveloping as its display. The speaker housings have been machined directly into the unibody enclosure, and their innovative architecture gives the speakers 61 percent more back volume compared to previous iPad audio designs. You'll hear a wider frequency range and up to three times more output than on any other iPad. The speakers in iPad Pro aren't just high fidelity, they're highly intelligent. While all four produce bass frequencies, the topmost speakers are dedicated to higher frequencies. They also automatically recognize whether the device is in portrait or landscape view. So you'll always get vivid, well-balanced sound no matter how you're holding the iPad Pro.
Smart Connector
The Smart Connector is an interface that takes advantage of the two-way conductive fabric in the Smart Keyboard (sold separately). It allows iPad Pro to provide power to the Smart Keyboard and lets the Smart Keyboard relay each of your keystrokes back to iPad Pro. Simply align the Smart Keyboard to iPad Pro - just as you would with a Smart Cover - and start typing.

A9X Chip with M9 Motion Coprocessor
The A9X, Apple's 3rd-generation 64-bit chip, gives iPad Pro the power to easily take on tasks that were once reserved for workstations and PCs. Despite the high performance, the A9X chip's underlying architecture is efficient, ensuring that there's one way in which iPad Pro isn't massive - battery consumption. With 1.8 times the CPU performance of the iPad Air 2's A8X, the A9X chip delivers in both speed and responsiveness. Even complex tasks like creating, rendering, and manipulating a 3D design or editing multiple streams of 4K video happen quickly and smoothly. Despite having nearly twice the pixels in its Retina display, iPad Pro still offers up to double the graphics performance of iPad Air 2. The iPad Pro features a revamped storage controller that has increased read and write speeds, so you can quickly open even the large files, like the big 4K movie you just edited or all the RAW images you imported from your HD camera.
Metal gets high graphics performance out of the A9X chip and iOS 9, so developers can design highly immersive console-style games and blazing-fast apps. Metal optimizes the CPU and graphics performance to deliver detailed graphics and complex visual effects, so every virtual world feels more realistic.
Battery Life
You might expect that such high performance would compromise battery life. But even with its high-resolution Retina display and robust A9X chip, the iPad Pro maintains energy efficiency, providing up to 10 hours of battery life on a single charge while on Wi-Fi and up to 9 hours on a cellular signal (battery life may vary depending on usage).
Wireless Connectivity
The iPad Pro features 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology and MIMO, so you can easily connect to fast networks and enjoy download speeds of up to 866 Mb/s.

iOS 9

Slide Over
Now you can open a second app without leaving the one you're in. You can quickly browse the web, respond to a text message, or jot something down in a note, then slide that app away and get back to the one you were using before.
Split View
With Split View on the iPad Pro, you can go a step further and have two apps open and active at the same time. Work on a sketch with the reference photo beside it or write a paper while copying citations from a book in iBooks.
While using FaceTime or watching a video, press the Home button and your video screen scales down to a corner of your display. Tap to open a second app, and your video continues to play - even while you use the other app. So keep watching your favorite TV show while you reply to the email that just came in.
Shortcuts at Your Fingertips
Shape up your text in no time with the Shortcut Bar, convenient editing tools, and a handy way to select text with Multi-Touch gestures. And now when you use the Smart Keyboard (sold separately) with your iPad Pro, you can enjoy even more keyboard shortcuts.

    Apple iPad Pro reviews

    12.9" iPad Pro (128GB, Wi-Fi + 4G LTE, Gold) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 55.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not So Great This is a iPad with a big screen. It does have the added advantage of the capability of using the Apple Pencil. Additionally it has a full keyboard which makes it better when using Microsoft office products. My problem is the battery charge life. I frequently take long flights and battery life is extremely important to me. The Apple ads say up to 10 hours with video. My iPad Pro get abut five hours. I spent a considerable time on the phone with Apple support making sure all by setting were correct to get 10 hours. Still I only get five hours. This iPad is heavier than the standard size iPad air. Unless you really have a need for the large screen I would recommend that you go with the standard size iPad as it is much more comfortable to use.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Dissapointed Not the design dream I would expect from Apple. Awkward accessories to make it stand. (Kickstand would have been an obvious if Steve jobs was around). No place for the pencil to attach - I'm always looking for it. The keyboard crazy awkward design. Size is ok for me as I wanted something like a laptop. Price not a value compared to Microsoft tablet. Sound good though, no complaints there. Overall not apples best and I'm sure we will see what they have learned from this failure on the iPad pro 2 which I should have waited for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from bigger and faster other than that, it's your standard, reliable iPad: great for reading the NYTimes as you can almost get an entire page on the screen with a font size that is actually readable; Apple keyboard cover seems quite usable and is incredibly thin... not much thicker (or heavier) than the smart cover. planned to use the Pro at home and travel with a mini, but the speed of the Pro and size of its keyboard are leading me to rethink that strategy; still waiting for the pen, which might just swing the decision in favor of the Pro for my next trip

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing to have iPad 4 portrait height in landscape position Battery life is good. I use it on T-Mobile and Wi-Fi and both work great. Wireless AC is great. It's too big for holding in one hand and typing with the other, I recommend getting a lap stand with ventilation like a Rolodex Mesh Workspace Laptop Stand. The stand is at the right angle, and it's better than using a pillow because the iPad keeps cool by having air flow over the entire back side. This iPad is the fastest Apple handheld device I've used! The sound quality and loudness were unexpectedly great. There's no need for a sound redirection clip-on. Charging time takes longer than I like, but it's par for a tablet device. Good thing for a long battery usage time. I don't play any games, so I can't comment, but expect it'd be excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excited to have my iPad Pro I use my iPad for a number of functions, and I was two generations old when I sprung for this iPad Pro. Wow. Can't say enough about it. Light, fast, beautiful screen. The speed is really why I bought it, and I am not disappointed. I use the iPad to read newspapers and now when I click on a picture or a story or a video I get an immediate action ... not the 30 second wait I had on my older iPad. Big improvement - very satisfied.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good I haven't had a chance to use this product with the Apple Pencil, yet, as it is still on backorder at the time of this review. When I receive my Apple Pencil, I fully intend to try it out as an alternative to my Wacom Intuous Pro tablet. That said, I am extremely happy with my purchase, so far. Saying that this is a giant, powerful iPad, isn't a criticism, in my mind. This is especially true when you are coming from an iPad 2 (or 3 since I've been using my wife's for a while now) like I am. The better sound is really, really nice, for my personal use, but it's inconsequential for my use as a business tool. When I bought my first iPad, years ago, I bought it to be able to give my clients a better preview of the images we shot, when we were away from the studio. I resisted upgrading to thinner, faster iPads because they essentially did the same thing, on the same (although higher quality) screen size. The iPad Pro offers a real upgrade, for my purposes, with its' much larger screen. Here is my current setup for photographing outside of my studio. I shoot with a Nikon D810, with a CF card set to receive RAW files and an Eye-Fi Pro set to receive jpegs...usually at medium resolution. I use the Eye-Fi card in direct mode and the app Shuttersnitch to receive the jpeg files. This allows my clients to see a really large preview of their images, almost instantly. The only slight hiccups, in this process, are that sometimes the transfers can be a bit finicky, based on distance and whether or not the iPad turns off. The other is that, under direct sunlight, the screen can be pretty difficult to see. Glare is also a problem. All of these problems have easy workarounds and none are deal breakers for me. The benefits FAR outweigh these issues. Aside from the bigger screen, the added power of the A9x chip makes short work of rendering the jpegs when we zoom in for a closer view. I do wish that Wi-Fi was an option on 32GB models, but I've waited so long on a product like this, I just bit the bullet. If the iPad Pro and Pencil combination proves to be a worthy (or superior) Wacom competitor, then the value of this product skyrockets and I will be ecstatic. If that doesn't work out as well as I hope, and it's just a giant iPad, I'm still happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great iPad I was upgrading from the iPad 3, and I like the larger screen size with high quality pixel resolution. I use this for photography and viewing photos looks nice and sharp. Reading magazines in vertical position is almost like reading a printed copy, this works well for my old eyes. I noticed a big difference having a 4 speaker design when watching videos. Sounds much better having speakers on the left and right sides, than 1 speaker. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better even than I expected I've considered buying the Pro since it came out and finally felt it time to upgrade from my Air. I'm a photographer and use the Astropad app with my Macbook pro and the Pixelator app. Just terrific to have such a large screen to work on. I love the split screen on the large 12.9 screen with both halves being almost as large as a 9.7 Ipad. I do a lot of cut and paste, multi app use, also keep 1 smaller side for mail or IMs. Reading a newspaper on it is great as well as books, browser sites, looking at other photographers work or art. Working on docs, pdfs or spreadsheets is just a nice experience. I have used an Ipad since first week of Ipad One so have found my own ways to use it productively. There is so much I like about Ipads but having the strong chip, the 4 GB RAM make this extremely fast and even more useful than previously. Which leads me to my only gripes--I'd love some way to access my external HDs. Right now I'm using a wifi external. I wish Adobe could develop full Lightroom for the Ipad but expect this is well in the future. I find I can do 98% of my work and personal computer things on the Pro and with continuity, passoff, everything works together--my Ipad pro, Iphone and Macbook Pro.
