Canon G5 X Overview

  • 1Description

An advanced compact camera characterized by a large image sensor and fast zoom lens, the PowerShot G5 X from Canon pairs a 20.2MP 1" High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6 image processor to form the Canon HS SYSTEM for enhanced low-light capabilities, fast performance and Full HD 1080p/60 video recording. Matching the imaging versatility is the 4.2x optical zoom lens, which provides a 24-100mm equivalent focal length range, and features a bright f/1.8-2.8 maximum aperture for depth of field control and working in difficult lighting conditions. Both a high-resolution 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder and 3.0" 1.04m-dot multi-angle touchscreen LCD are available for monitoring and image review, and built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows you to wirelessly share imagery with a smartphone, tablet, or Connect Station CS100. Revolving around the sophisticated sensor and processor combination, the G5 X sports both apt imaging capabilities as well as a wealth of functional assets for shooting control and sharing.

To benefit handling, the G5 X has been fitted with numerous physical controls, including a dedicated exposure compensation dial, front dial, control ring and control dial for quickly customizing various shooting settings. A hot shoe is incorporated into the design for working with an optional external flash, and the camera is also compatible with the optional RS-60E3 for wired remote shooting.

20.2MP 1" CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 6 Processor
A large 20.2MP 1" High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6 image processor combine to create the Canon HS SYSTEM, which offers enhanced low-light performance with reduced image noise, as well as a top sensitivity of ISO 12800. The sensor and processor also benefit performance speeds throughout the camera, including a top 5.9 fps shooting rate in one-shot AF or 4.4 fps with continuous AF. The physically large sensor and advanced processing techniques also contribute to rich image quality that is well-suited to printing applications.
4.2x Optical Zoom Lens
The versatile 4.2x optical zoom lens covers a wide-angle to short telephoto 24-100mm equivalent focal length range, and features an f/1.8-2.8 maximum aperture along with image stabilization to benefit handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. The fast maximum aperture also pairs with a nine-blade diaphragm to produce a smooth out-of-focus quality when working with selective focus techniques.
Intelligent IS
Utilizing the unique Intelligent IS image stabilization system, this camera compensates for a variety of types of camera shake by analyzing different movement types and applying specific settings to produce the sharpest imagery and smoothest movies:
  • Normal IS: Corrects for a wide variety of camera movement types when shooting stills.
  • Panning IS: Intended for use when making tracking shots, this setting ensures that IS will not interfere with desired lateral camera movements.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS: Used for both stills and video recording, this setting corrects for shift-type camera shake that is common when photographing close-up subjects. It also compensates for motion blur associated with recording video while walking.
  • Tripod: Image stabilization is deactivated when shooting stills atop a tripod.
  • Dynamic IS: This setting is effective when recording video using wider focal lengths and simultaneously walking or moving.
  • Powered IS: Ideally suited for shooting video with telephoto focal lengths, this mode compensates for the camera movements that become more apparent with greater zoom magnifications.
  • Active Tripod IS: Unlike the stills tripod mode, this video-specific tripod mode compensates for slight amounts of shake that can be caused when recording movies from a tripod.
Body Design
  • A 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder offers high-resolution, wide gamut eye-level monitoring for critical viewing in harsh lighting conditions. The viewfinder provides 100% frame coverage, incorporates a sensor for switching between the finder and rear monitor, has a smooth refresh rate of 120 fps, and has an eye point of 22mm for viewing flexibility.
  • For live view monitoring and image playback, a 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD screen is available and features a multi-angle design for working from high and low angles, and is also a touchscreen for intuitive settings control and menu navigation. The vari-angle design can rotate up to 270° and can also be turned around and closed against the camera body for protection while shooting.
  • An exposure compensation dial, as well as a customizable front dial, control ring, and control dial, lend easily accessible, direct control over various shooting settings.
  • A hot shoe allows you to pair optional external flashes as well as other shoe-mounted accessories with the camera.
  • A remote socket permits use of the optional RS-60E3 Remote Switch for wired remote camera control.
Full HD Video Recording
In addition to stills shooting, Full HD 1080p video recording is possible in multiple frame rates, including 60, 30, and 24 fps. Movies are saved in the MP4 format and an HDMI port permits direct, high definition playback and live monitoring on external screens. Audio quality has been enhanced thanks to a wider dynamic range and better signal-to-noise ratio and for greater control during recording, access to manual exposure modes is available. Additionally, focus peaking can be used for faster, more intuitive manual focusing.
Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC
Both photos and movies can be wirelessly shared to smartphones or tablets, using the Canon Camera Connect app, for instant online sharing or backed up to the Canon Connect Station CS100 via built-in Wi-Fi with NFC connectivity. Remote shooting from a linked mobile device is also available, allowing you to wirelessly configure exposure modes, aspect ratios, AF frame modes, or drive modes. In addition to the touch-to-connect functionality of NFC, a dedicated mobile device connect button is also integrated into the camera's design for seamless pairing of the camera to a device for browsing and sharing imagery.

Star Nightscape, Star Trails, and Star Time-Lapse Movies can be recorded, with auto or manual settings, and support functions, such as Night Display, Color Adjustment, and star Emphasis, offer greater control over the final results.
  • A built-in pop-up flash can be used to provide additional illumination to a scene when working in challenging lighting conditions.

Canon G5 X Reviews

PowerShot G5 X Digital Camera is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 76.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Miniaturized DSLR I was looking for a high quality grab & go camera for times when I didn't want to take along my 5D. I originally bought the M3 Mirrorless, but couldn't get comfortable with it for a number of reasons, so it was returned. I purchased the G5X mainly because i just feel more comfortable looking through a Viewfinder. I've shot for about two weeks with the G5X and love this little GEM. It's basically a miniaturized 5D with a fixed, telescoping lens (24-70 35mm equivalent). It's a perfect daily bring along. Not small enough to slip into a pant pocket, but an easy carry. Excellent ease of use, terrific image quality, just what I needed for a grab & go !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worthy successor to the earlier G series Had a Powershot G!0, but replaced it with a couple of mirrorless ILCs, none of which really satisfied me. The G5X may be the best compact non-ILC travel camera ever made: 24-100 equivalent lens (although 24-120 would have been even better) Built-in EVF Rotating screen Pop-up flash 20 MP i inch sensor The OVF are not potential problem children as on the Sonys. Battery life could be a small problem with small battery, but so far has not been and issue. Worked great after dark in Las Vegas, without the flash. If you travel with just one bag, and can't haul a big SLR and lenses, this little guy should take care of everything but wildlife.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Almost a perfect everyday camera I've previously owne most of the G series cameras, as everyday cameras when I can't carry my DSLR. My G12 was my favorite, until the 5GX came out. It's nearly perfect. Love the viewfinder that auto detects when looking through it. Great LCD image. The major selling point of this camera. Too many times bright sunlight makes using the LCD difficult. Problem solved. But I said, "almost". The 5Gx needs, * Filter support * External microphone and speaker connectors * Definitely needs a way to input external power, for time-lapsed photos, using my external trigger. Battery would run out, before you got a few seconds worth of stills for time-lapse video Still, I would give it a 5 rating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great small camera The G5x replaces my wife's Canon G12 which took a bath when she was hit by a rouge ocean wave. The many positive things said about the camera by others are true, its small and easy to carry, lens is sharp for most users, it handles well, the electronic viewfinder is accurate and useful, the swivel LCD screen is used a lot, and the large sensor is a big plus. Most commands and functions are familiar to her. The touch screen works well. Auto works wonders automatically correcting for face backlighting with out using fill flash. Face recognition is helpful for focus which is usually fast along with off/on. Used camera for 1 mo so still finding new features. Hope it lasts as long as G12.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Impression: This thing rocks! I've just started to bond with one of these, but I can already tell you it's everything I've hoped for in a truly pocketable camera. It struck me as being a bit smaller than expected (no complaints) when it came out of the box, but it feels solid, has a ton of controls for fine-tuning exposure and accessing menus right at your fingertips, has a nice 24-100mm range in a fast lens, and produces very clean, detailed images at 800 ISO in low light and very usable/cleanable images at at least 1600. Stated image count per charge is a little low, but nothing an extra battery and limiting monitor use can't help resolve ... especially with the great 100 percent viewfinder. More testing in the coming days, but so far so excellent, Canon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Small Camera Around I have had both the Sony A5100 and Sony A6000, but this camera beats both of those cameras when it comes to Quality of Pictures, Ease of Use and Ease of control. I am a Canon 5D Mark 3 user and I have been looking for a while for a small camera that has all the controls of a DSLR. Canon G5X has everything I have been looking for. The quality of the pictures comparing to the 5D Mark3 is almost the same , you won't recognize the difference. The touch screen is very responsive and the menu system is so user friendly, giving access to the all the controls together with all the dials. This camera reminds me of the Fuji system of cameras which gives all the dials needed for the Aperture, the Shutter speed and ISO thru the touch screen

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent all around camera I bought this camera to be my second camera when shooting sporting events. The low light F-stop of 1.8 allowed me to shoot indoors for post game things without having to bring another DLSR. I was going to buy another lens that would do this but once I saw this camera I was sold, It is much smaller and easier to just put on a strap around my neck. I love the flip out screen even though I was not sure how much I would use it. But I use it 90% of the time versus the viewfinder. The amount of controls it has is what sold me on this camera which allows me to shoot manual when I want or just auto mode.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice little camera Decided I needed a back-up to my 5DIII for a recent trip plus wanted a smaller walk-around rig for those times when I didn't feel like lugging the big boy. Camera takes wonderful images, shooting both jpeg and RAW. Not concerned about continuous shooting as that's saved for the 5D. Controls are Canon like, so getting use to the menus wasn't an issue. Ability to program function buttons a plus (need to get to ISO setting quick.) Only issue is the small grip of this camera often has me inadvertently pushing buttons at the most inopertune time, like when I want to shoot, so the viewfinder shows a menu item rather than the scene I want to capture. Make sure you get extra batteries as they drain fast! Also felt if good enough for Jeff Cable it should work for me.
