FUJIFILM LTO Universal Cleaning Cartridge is equipped with a computer memory chip (just like the data tape). The chip stores various information and it has an embedded code that is recognized by the compatible drive's firmware. Once the cleaning cartridge is used to capacity (15 - 50 uses, drive dependent), the drive will no longer accept the cleaning tape and will eject the tape, prohibiting further use.
If you edit video projects, you want to keep backups on media other than hard drives. LTO-4 is what I went with a few years ago and it has been rock solid. Most drives require a cleaning cartridge be run through either after your drive has had a certain number of hours or uses. I trust FujiFilm tape cartridges so I figured I'd stick with a name brand since this is a very important piece of gear in my edit system. This cartridge is super simple to use; put it in and let the drive do its thing. Took less than a minute. I buy from B&H because I trust they'll ship genuine, name brand items.
