Teradek Cube Series Overview

The Teradek Cube 655 is a real-time H.264 encoder with 3G-SDI and HDMI inputs. It encodes up to 1080p video at bit rates up to 15 Mbps, allowing for high-quality images to be streamed over Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or USB (Wi-Fi streaming is limited to 10 Mbps). When bandwidth is limited, adaptive bit rate allows the Cube to automatically adjust and stream at the highest quality possible. The Cube 655 can ingest up to 1080p60 signals, but outputs them at a frame rate of 30 fps (or lower, per your selection), for a max output of 1080p30.

Cube 655 features support for 33-point 3D LUTs, as well as Pomfort LiveGrade integration that lets you monitor graded footage on the set or afterwards. Looks can be applied to the stream or controlled separately using the free Teradek TeraView app (iOS). Cube also offers support for USB modems for streaming video live over cellular networks.

Cube 655 has an SD card slot that enables you to record the stream for post-production, in which case the recording bit rate and resolution match the encoded stream quality. The Cube 655 also has a configurable test pattern generator that lets you test your stream without connecting a video source, and prevents interruptions if video sync is lost.

You can monitor the video stream on up to six networked iOS devices simultaneously using the Teradek TeraView or VUER app, or six Android devices using the Teradek VLC app, or a mix-and-match of six to accommodate both iOS and Android users. This allows clients, the crew, and the director to see the footage at the same time in real time.

Cube 655 has a robust aluminum housing and an OLED display with joystick navigation buttons. It is manufactured in the USA.

Teradek Cube Series Reviews

Easy to use over-the-air camera to studio solution

First let me get this straight: Especially the last couple of months I became more and more a big fan of Teradek gear, so my opinion will be a little bit biased. I use the Teradek Cube 775 Decoder in combination with a Teradek Cube 755 Encoder mostly to deliver camera feeds from unusual places to a centralized studio. I tried many different approaches before bonding network interfaces via specialised routers and/or PCs but the downside always was that if something goes wrong you need somebody who is well versed with the equipment to deal with these issues. Another problem was the bad cellular coverage in the areas I'm operating in, so I needed HEVC to keep bitrates low and quality acceptable. A huge plus is that Teradek also implemented SRT now, which makes the streams even more stable and can also be used to playout the stream using VLC (also possible with the mpeg stream but I never used it to be honest). Some other notable features: You can choose your desired output format in the decoder menu, so it's also doing a cross-conversion if you need it. You can connect up to three network interfaces to use the bonding function. You can record the received stream to SD-Card etc. If you want to power it via battery that's not an issue: You can either make your own cable using a lemo 2-pin connector (e.g. lemo 2-pin to D-Tap) or buy a ready made one from Teradek. One thing to note: You need a Core Cloud Subscription if you want to use some of the features, but it's really worth the price. For example on the encoder side clients can be given access to a web based player if needed without the hassle to setup anything other than send them an invite with the personalised access information to their email-address. (This is something not directly related to the decoder, but the ecosystem around it) My biggest frustration with the Cubes for now is: IFB is not working with SRT and I only found out about it, when I did my own testing. That's a bummer but I hope there will be some kind of solution in the future. For now I have to use Unity Intercom Cloud to talk to the operator. So of course not everything is great and I also had problems with Teradek gear before. One of the devices I used had overheating issues and although their support was slow with their responses in the last couple of months (COVID-19), they always tried to offer constructive advice or gave reimbursement if some off their services didn't work as expected. But you know what a great experience it was to just plug the decoder in, connect it via Core Cloud and instantly get a video feed? I spent hours setting up routers, laptops and software before to achieve the same result – often ending up trying to find the reason why I didn't receive the stream. Don't get me wrong I'm not the greatest IT-expert but still I know enough, that people introduce me as the networking expert. Like with a Mac computer: If something saves me time in the end, it's worth the additional expense. Similar products are starting to appear now from other manufactures for cheaper prices but for now I'll stick to the Teradek solutions because they work well for me and my business environment. Big thanks also to the B&H Sales and Support Team who managed to ship to Germany really fast and also contacted customs about address issues – still DHL/customs here in Germany was really slow: They needed 5 days to contact me in the first place and another 6 days (multiple calls, multiple e-Mail exchanges) to send the parcel to me – deutsche Effizienz.

If you want to record on sd card you need to change setting

If you want to record on sd card you need to change its setting every power cycle. This problem is not fixed yet with latest firmware 8.2.1. If you try recording with 7.x firmware you will face audio and video sync problem. Defect to all cube 6xx model!

A game changer for the director

This product makes it possible to view what is being shot in (almost) real-time, and it does this wirelessly with as many as four iOS Wifi devices (iPhones, iPads, etc). It's an incredible boon to any member of the crew who needs to be able to assess the image being shot. I used it on a recent shoot and the director is hooked. One note: be sure to update the firmware before first use.

very powerful device but firmware is buggy

this little encoder creates a great looking stream and has a lot of processing power but has issues. First, the stream randomly exceeded it's set frame rate after encoding for a while which crashed the transcoder and brought the stream down. Also, making changes to the web GUI didn't reflect these changes the exterior display, until performing a reboot. the web gui also has a stability issue where it appears the connection and control becomes lost but that's not actually the case. The GUI needs a lot of work still.

Having used an older model a couple years ago, I knew what to expect going in. Was not disappointed. The addition of recording straight to H.264 is wonderful and helps add a new dimension to our production value. I would highly recommend this device to anyone looking for a solid streaming option.

They're just reliable

I currently own about 1/2 dozen Teradek products including two of the 755's. They're my go-to device for streaming. They just work & are extremely reliable. When it comes to streaming, I like a device that does just one thing and it does it well. In this case, 755 is that. Also, they refreshed the UI with the 6xx and 7xx series and it's much better UI than the Vidiu series. My little trick is to not lay these flat like B&H pix shows but to stand it up with a little tripod stand on the desk.

Worked until firmware updates

Was a very reliable unit for over a year - had two of them. Then upgraded to latest 2020 firmware and it bricked both units - right during COVID crisis. QC checking of firmware by Teradek must be lacking.

how is this different from servPro?
Asked by: Ryan
The ServPro is a video encoder that is capable of creating its own network and is compatible with an app that will provide your smartphone or tablet with professional monitoring features such as peaking, zebras, false color amongst other tools. The Teradek Cube 655 H.264 HD Encoder lacks the specialized features such as the ability to create a network for up to 10 devices.

question

If you have 4 of these (one per camera) Can you switch between camera's A,B, C, D on a single device/ monitor?
Asked by: Jordan G.
Yes, but each of the Cubes would need to be configured to a router such as: <a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1119251-REG/asus_rt_ac3200_tri_band_wireless_ac3200_gigabit_router.html target= _blank >http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1119251-REG/asus_rt_ac3200_tri_band_wireless_ac3200_gigabit_router.html</a>Then, the iPads would connect to the same router and access the 4 streams via the Teradek app Teraview.
