Apple iMac overview

  • 1Description

The late 2015 Apple 21.5" iMac measures at just 5 mm at its edges, which is 40% less volume than the 2011 iMac. The 21.5" widescreen display features LED backlighting for vibrant, accurate color. With in-plane switching (IPS) technology, the iMac has a wide 178° viewing angle. The screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio and Full HD 1920 x 1080 native resolution, supported by integrated Intel HD Graphics 6000.

The iMac houses a 5th-Gen Broadwell 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 Dual-Core processor with 8GB of 1867 MHz LPDDR3 onboard RAM. For storage, the iMac has a 1TB 5400 rpm HDD.

Outfitted with 802.11ac Wi-Fi (backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n) for the speediest hook-ups to your home network, this iMac is also configured with Bluetooth 4.0, as well as an SDXC card slot for extra storage, four USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt 2 ports, and a Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) jack. It also has a Kensington lock slot for added security.

For ports, the iMac has dual Thunderbolt 2 ports (which also double as Mini DisplayPorts) and four USB 3.0 ports. You'll be able to connect with various compatible components. If you would rather go wireless with your peripherals, you can use Bluetooth 4.0 technology where compatible.

21.5" IPS Display
Whether your iMac is in your studio, living room, or kitchen, the display is the focal point. With a 1920 x 1080 screen resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, you'll be able to playback Full HD 1080p content natively. The IPS panel allows for wider viewing angles so more people can enjoy the display without having to crowd around it. With integrated Intel HD Graphics 6000, the iMac delivers Full HD visual effects and 3D graphics. The iMac simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 3840 x 2160 resolution on an external display.
5th-Gen Broadwell Intel Core i5 Dual-Core Performance
The iMac houses a 5th-Gen Broadwell Intel Core i5 Dual-Core processor. Its quad cores can reach a stock speed of 1.6 GHz. It can also be overclocked up to 2.7 GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. The 5th-gen Broadwell Intel processor uses low voltage for better energy efficiency while still providing fast performance. Combined with 8GB of 1867 MHz LPDDR3 onboard RAM, the iMac allows you to multitask quickly and efficiently.
Thin Design
The iMac maintains its 5mm profile, which is up to 40 percent less volume than the 2011 iMac. Using an advanced welding method called friction-stir welding, Apple was able to join the front and the back of the iMac together directly.
802.11ac Wi-Fi & Bluetooth 4.0
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, the iMac takes desktop Wi‑Fi speeds over the top. When it's connected to an 802.11ac base station - including AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule (both sold separately) - you can reach data rates of up to 1.3 Gbps. That's triple the previous 802.11n standard, which means you'll get up to three times faster Wi‑Fi. You also get double the channel bandwidth, with 80 MHz-wide channels providing more room for more data to flow faster than ever. Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology is also built in, so you can connect accessories such as a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Thunderbolt 2
Expand the capabilities of your Mac. Connect high-performance peripherals. Transfer data at high speed. Even daisy-chain multiple devices. And the iMac with Retina 4K display has Thunderbolt 2, delivering twice the bandwidth - up to 20 Gbps - for fast data transfers. While the Thunderbolt 2 ports double as mini DisplayPorts, the iMac with Retina 4K display cannot be used as a standalone monitor like its predecessor. It can, however, be used simultaneously with an external display and can output up to a 3840 by 2160 resolution.
USB 3.0
With USB 3.0, you can transfer large files in seconds instead of minutes. Every iMac comes with four USB 3.0 ports - with speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 - and you can connect all your USB-compatible devices, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod or digital camera.

    Apple iMac reviews

    21.5" iMac (Late 2015) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love, love, love my new iMac!!! Being an 80-year old retired woman who uses the computer for daily use, this machine is great! Most of all I love the speed in which my pages download without sitting for 5 minutes to get a page on the internet. The machine is very sleek and thin with beautiful, crisp colors on the screen. The new mouse is great. One thing I miss on it is the return button. I have to click the cursor which takes more time but there are many other innovations which are great to use. I have not tried all the new software yet but will gradually get my feet wet:-) I am so happy I bought this new machine!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love my iMac! This is my first iMac and I'm very happy with it! I love how sleek and beautiful it is! I have always been a Windows person so was a bit hesitant about ordering the iMac. I needed a new computer and figured since having an iPhone and iPad for several years now that the switch would be much easier. There is still a learning curve with the Mac but it will just take some time and patience. The convenience of having all of my electronics on the same system makes it all worth it! And if I want, I can always go to the Apple store and take the free lessons that they provide. Ordering from B&H was easy and my iMac was delivered on the day they said (within 5 days, including the weekend).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great desktop computer I bought this desktop to replace the older iMac at home that had begun to behave erratically. The new computer arrived within 4-5 days of placement of the order; setting it up is straightforward. The display is brighter and sharper compared to the 2011 model, and the computational speed as well as the file transfer speed on the USB3 bus are also significantly faster. It is a pure delight using it to navigate the internet, check emails, and display and edit documents, photos and video files. I have not encountered any issue during the two weeks of daily use. I initially frowned on the wired keyboard (as I thought a wireless keyboard in older iMac to be a neat feature) but after 2 weeks of use I find it to be a non-issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All that I need and more. I use the iMac for personal use and for church (song leader choir director and deacon). This is my first Mac and after years and years of PC shortcomings I decided it was time for a change. It's super fast, well laid out, and tons of fun to use. The learning transition from Windows OS to the El Capitan OS is not too bad except, as I found out, running down an email problem was a bit daunting. All in all this is a terrific product that I would highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Finally Talked My Husband into Changing to a Mac! My husband has a woodworking business, and to say he isn't a techie, well that would be a MAJOR understatement! Give him the most complex power tool and he'll stay at it until he figures it out. Computers, not so much! So, after years of frustration with that OTHER PLATFORM, he finally upgraded, and there was rejoicing in WHOVILLE!!! One very SLIGHT Oooops! (my fault entirely!) was that I ordered WIFI ONLY, so ended up needing to order an external CD/DVD drive. NO WORRIES! I asked and B&H supplied! All is well, and my husband is falling in love with his MAC !!! HOORAY !!!!! GREAT PRODUCTS, GREAT PRICES, GREAT SERVICE !!!!! There aren't enough exclamation points!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from just perfect! Bought this unit for my mother. Was worried the base model would not be fast enough, but I was wrong. I have the model with the fusion drive, and the only real difference I notice is a little longer to boot. She loves it. She's coming from a Windows7 machine, so I knew she would like it. B&H had the best price and I always appreciate working with them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Entry level iMac with a great display This is more like a MacBook Air in a desktop form and not a true desktop spec machine. It is a great entry level iMac though and can handle most day to day activities. One thing to note that it comes with a regular HDD as standard and hence not the zippest in terms of booting and application start up. If paired with an external SDD (thunderbolt or USB 3.0) for boot up and applications it works very well
