Apple iMac overview

  • 1Description

The late 2015 Apple 21.5" iMac measures at just 5 mm at its edges, which is 40% less volume than the 2011 iMac. The 21.5" widescreen display features LED backlighting for vibrant, accurate color. With in-plane switching (IPS) technology, the iMac has a wide 178° viewing angle. The screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio and Full HD 1920 x 1080 native resolution, supported by integrated Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200.

The iMac houses a 5th-Gen Broadwell 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5 Quad-Core processor with 8GB of 1867 MHz LPDDR3 onboard RAM. For storage, the iMac has a 1TB 5400 rpm HDD.

Outfitted with 802.11ac Wi-Fi (backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n) for the speediest hook-ups to your home network, this iMac is also configured with Bluetooth 4.0, as well as an SDXC card slot for extra storage, four USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt 2 ports, and a Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) jack. It also has a Kensington lock slot for added security.

For ports, the iMac has dual Thunderbolt 2 ports (which also double as Mini DisplayPorts) and four USB 3.0 ports. You'll be able to connect with various compatible components. If you would rather go wireless with your peripherals, you can use Bluetooth 4.0 technology where compatible.

21.5" IPS Display
Whether your iMac is in your studio, living room, or kitchen, the display is the focal point. With a 1920 x 1080 screen resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, you'll be able to playback Full HD 1080p content natively. The IPS panel allows for wider viewing angles so more people can enjoy the display without having to crowd around it. With integrated Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200, the iMac delivers Full HD visual effects and 3D graphics. The iMac simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 4096 x 2304 resolution on an external display.
5th-Gen Broadwell Intel Core i5 Quad-Core Performance
The iMac houses a 5th-Gen Broadwell Intel Core i5 Quad-Core processor. Its quad cores can reach a stock speed of 2.8 GHz. It can also be overclocked up to 3.3 GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. The 5th-gen Broadwell Intel processor uses low voltage for better energy efficiency while still providing fast performance. Combined with 8GB of 1867 MHz LPDDR3 onboard RAM, the iMac allows you to multitask quickly and efficiently.
Thin Design
The iMac maintains its 5mm profile, which is up to 40 percent less volume than the 2011 iMac. Using an advanced welding method called friction-stir welding, Apple was able to join the front and the back of the iMac together directly.
802.11ac Wi-Fi & Bluetooth 4.0
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, the iMac takes desktop Wi‑Fi speeds over the top. When it's connected to an 802.11ac base station - including AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule (both sold separately) - you can reach data rates of up to 1.3 Gbps. That's triple the previous 802.11n standard, which means you'll get up to three times faster Wi‑Fi. You also get double the channel bandwidth, with 80 MHz-wide channels providing more room for more data to flow faster than ever. Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology is also built in, so you can connect accessories such as a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Thunderbolt 2
Expand the capabilities of your Mac. Connect high-performance peripherals. Transfer data at high speed. Even daisy-chain multiple devices. And the iMac with Retina 4K display has Thunderbolt 2, delivering twice the bandwidth - up to 20 Gbps - for fast data transfers. While the Thunderbolt 2 ports double as mini DisplayPorts, the iMac with Retina 4K display cannot be used as a standalone monitor like its predecessor. It can, however, be used simultaneously with an external display and can output up to a 3840 by 2160 resolution.
USB 3.0
With USB 3.0, you can transfer large files in seconds instead of minutes. Every iMac comes with four USB 3.0 ports - with speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 - and you can connect all your USB-compatible devices, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod or digital camera.

    Apple iMac reviews

    21.5" iMac (Late 2015) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 42.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fine for now, NOT upgradable Well, I learned the hard way that this Mac is not upgradable, the ram is soldered on and non removable, the glass is is also glued on so you can't get to the inner workings without ripping apart the computer. I got entry level because I did not want to pay the apple tax on ssd drives and added memory figuring I could just do it myself like I have in my 2 previous iMacs. If you just putz around your computer with web and email this machine is a beast, if you want to do some video editing it is just ehh, I will have to get a new computer in the next 2 years to keep up with technology when my last iMac lasted me 8 years with upgrades to it throughout.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would and did buy this again. Professional Wedding & Portrait Photographer. After being a PC user forever I was excited and nervous about changing everything over to Mac. I spend so many hours editing photos at my computer and I hate having my workflow slowed by new equipment. Buying this was the best thing I gave done for my workflow. The quicker machine made up for everything and it really doesn't take much to learn the new commands and shortcuts. I debated the bigger monitor but I like to sit close to my screen so it wasn't needed. We actually went out and bought a second Mac a month later format wife. Can't fault it so far.....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Luv My new iMac After much contemplation, I decided to migrate from a MacBook Pro as my main business computer to a desktop computer - iMac 21.5. non-retina, 1tb/5400 rpm hd, 8gb ram. Considerations in making this decision... change in business travel habits - significantly less significantly more home office time need for a larger screen for ease in viewing larger screen for spreadsheet & powerpoint work some digital photography post-processing work age of current MacBook Pros Combination of price and performance played into my decision. And as I have limited desk space, 21.5 model was ideal. And having been an Apple user since the late 80's, other options were not in play. I took delivery of this iMac a week ago and finally got around to setting it up yesterday. As usual, the set-up experience was all Apple - easy, quick & intuitive. I was concerned about migrating from Mountain Lion from my MacBook Pro. No worries, everything went smoothly - initial start time did take a while but that is typical with Spotlight running for the first time. I am now writing this review on my new iMac 21.5. Very happy with the purchase and would not hesitate recommending this product. And of course, the buying experience with B&H Photo is best in class!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Outdated laptop class machine I'm personally a fan of Apple products, but this machine is so woefully underpowered, it makes me question Apple's commitment to desktop computers. Apple hasn't updated the iMac specs in nearly two years now, and it shows. The machine is beautiful, don't get me wrong, and Mac OS is great. But it runs so slowly! This one is one of the lower end models (compared to the 27 inch versions) and it basically has the specs of a mid tier laptop. It can barely run any creativity apps, much less MS Office. To anyone considering this machine, I would say hold off until Apple updates the line again... if they ever do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product and Greate Service Delivery was smooth with accurate tracking. This computer was a replacement for a nine year old IMAC. The wireless keyboard is small and the wireless mouse charging does not allow use. We replaced this with a standard wired keyboard with nine digit number pad and wired mouse which we purchased locally. B&H being a mass vendor did not show an option to swap out these items with the IMAC purchase. Free shipping and no local sales tax help wash out the additional cost. the existing back up drives and cloud services had the new unit on line on delivery day. B&H has been a preferred supplier for 22 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phones, iPad, iMac; it's Apple all the way around here. I was very impressed with the perfect packaging and the ease of setup. We were updating from a Ma ini that was getting very lethargic, so it's great to have the snappy agility of this new machine.
