Apple iMac overview

  • 1Description

Apple weds high-res 5K visuals into its sleek 5mm thin 27" iMac with Retina 5K Display. With a 5120 x 2880 native resolution, this iMac provides 14.7 million pixels, which is 7 times more than the standard HD display. The Retina 5K display also features a wider color gamut. Using a P3-based color gamut, the Retina 5K display provides a 25% larger color space than standard sRGB displays. And with more available colors, the images will appear more vivid and reveal greater detail.

The iMac houses a quad-core 6th-gen Skylake 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB of 1867 MHz DDR3 RAM. The iMac also has an AMD Radeon R9 M390 graphics card with 2GB of GDDR5 vRAM. For storage, the iMac has a 1TB Fusion Drive.

Outfitted with 802.11ac Wi-Fi (backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n) for the speediest hook-ups to your home network, this iMac is also configured with Bluetooth 4.0, as well as an SDXC card slot for extra storage, four USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt 2 ports, and a Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) jack. It also has a Kensington lock slot for added security.

For ports, the iMac has dual Thunderbolt 2 ports (which also double as Mini DisplayPorts) and four USB 3.0 ports. You'll be able to connect with various compatible components. If you would rather go wireless with your peripherals, you can use Bluetooth 4.0 technology where compatible.

27" Retina 5K IPS Display
Whether your iMac is in your studio, living room, or kitchen, the display is the focal point. With a 5120 x 2880 resolution, the iMac with Retina 5K display features 14.7 million pixels, which allows for crisp, clear text and support for 4K photos and videos. The IPS panel allows for wider viewing angles so more people can enjoy the Retina 5K display without having to crowd around it.
6th-Gen Skylake Quad-Core Intel Core Performance
The iMac houses a quad-core 6th-gen Skylake Intel Core i5 processor. Its quad cores can reach a stock speed of 3.2 GHz. It can also be overclocked up to 3.6 GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. The 6th-gen Skylake Intel processor uses low voltage for better energy efficiency while still providing fast performance. Combined with 8GB of 1867 MHz DDR3 RAM, the iMac allows you to multitask quickly and efficiently.
Impossibly Thin
The iMac with Retina 5K display maintains its 5mm profile, which is up to 40 percent less volume than the 2011 iMac. Using an advanced welding method called friction-stir welding, Apple was able to join the front and the back of the iMac together directly.
802.11ac Wi-Fi & Bluetooth 4.0
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, the iMac takes desktop Wi-Fi speeds over the top. When it's connected to an 802.11ac base station - including AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule (both sold separately) - you can reach data rates of up to 1.3 Gbps. That's triple the previous 802.11n standard, which means you'll get up to three times faster Wi‑Fi. You also get double the channel bandwidth, with 80MHz-wide channels providing more room for more data to flow faster than ever. Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology is also built in, so you can connect accessories such as a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Thunderbolt 2
Expand the capabilities of your Mac. Connect high-performance peripherals. Transfer data at high speed. Even daisy-chain multiple devices. And the iMac with Retina 5K display has Thunderbolt 2, delivering twice the bandwidth - up to 20 Gbps - for fast data transfers. While the Thunderbolt 2 ports double as mini DisplayPorts, the iMac with Retina 5K display cannot be used as a standalone monitor like its predecessor. It can, however, be used simultaneously with an external display and can output up to a 5120 x 2880 resolution.
USB 3.0
With USB 3.0, you can transfer large files in seconds instead of minutes. Every iMac comes with four USB 3.0 ports - with speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 - and you can connect all your USB-compatible devices, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod or digital camera.

    Apple iMac reviews

27" iMac with Retina 5K Display (Late 2015) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 84.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect, right out of the box My company bought me the apple iMac 27 with Retina 5K because I design all day for web and print. I upgraded from a 21 inch late 2011 iMac - which I loved - but space was becoming an issue. The new iMac has a ton of hard drive space. It only comes with 8gigs of ram, so I'm going to have to upgrade it, but things are moving and opening/closing nicely so i'm not in a huge rush. The 5K screen has changed my work flow....all the dimensions I used for landing pages and print materials look smaller on this screen so I have to magnify to 200% to get the actual size. I'm pretty happy with it, the only snag is everything I look at on screen has shrunk.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my new iMac and Retina 5K is fabulous I use my home computer for work and hobbies. I am active in music recording, video editing, and writing. My old machine was a 2009 iMac 21.5. It worked and is now my daughters machine. I needed to upgrade as I was unable to use some of the flight sims and editing software I have come to love. This machine outperforms all of my expectations. I love the large 27 screen. Watching videos on it is amazing and the clarity is really unbelievable. I highly recommend this machine to anyone looking for a new computer. I also highly recommend buying it from B&H as their service is unbeatable. Top notch!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5k IMac This is my first Apple computer. I've used Windows for years and thought I'd give it a try. I'm so glad that I did. OS X El Capitan is very easy to navigate and the 5k screen is AMAZING. Another great thing about this computer is the fact that everything is wireless. Its a very clean setup. The wireless keyboard and mouse are rechargeable, so there are no batteries to mess with. Also, the battery life are great. I've used them for weeks so far and haven't had to charge them once. The only con that I have with this computer is the fact that it doesn't come with an optical drive. Its not a huge deal really because I purchased an Apple Superdrive and it works great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tremendously capable for my simple needs I am by no means a heavy-duty computer user. I do not do gaming, film editing or heavy photo editing. Just running my carpentry business: doing estimates, sketching plans, emails, web research, and relying on the iCloud to integrate my desktop, iPhone and iPad Pro. I run Pages, Numbers, occasionally Photoshop and Illustrator and the standard suite of Apple apps. I was happy with my 2009 iMac, but it was slowing down with every update to safari, pages, numbers, photos, notes and calendars. This 27 with the fusion drive is incredibly capable! Every program launches instantly and accessing data in the cloud is seamless. I can split screen and easily see everything I'm working on. I can't believe how great the performance is! Definitely saving me time and stress.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Apple Delivers Again This was a replacement for my 2008 iMac. New iMac had very thin screen, superb resolution, and the fusion drive loads up quickly on startup. Does not come with a superdrive, but you can purchase a usb superdrive to plug in with no need for an external power supply. The 27 inch screen has lots of screen real estate that is ideal for creating my artwork / paintings. The computer is quiet and does not seem to heat up at all. Adding extra memory is simple.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome....One must have This Apple Great design, capability, functionality and stunning display. Though I have iPad ans iPhones but it is first time got a MAC. Pondered lot (especially seeing the higher price) before purchasing this but now I can say that it is not at all overpriced after using it only for 5 days. OS is far superior than windows... too fast and too simple. Lastly I must like to share the B&H experience. It was really great. I had to postpone the delivery for two days due to some personal reasons and B&H customer service was very prompt and courteous. Kudos... Guys!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the iMac Retina 27. Was concerned that it is a 'late 2015' model, this being well into 2016, and appreciated B&H's disclosure. Not sure if Apple store is so forthcoming about this. Then just yesterday (Sept. 7), at Apple's Special Event announcements, the iPhone 7 and Apple watch grabbed the headlines with no references to new iMac developments. This just perpetuates the annual debate of how often one needs to buy the latest Mac. Either way, I am delighted with this beautiful product.
