Apple iMac overview

  • 1Description

Apple weds high-res 5K visuals into its sleek 5mm thin 27" iMac with Retina 5K Display. With a 5120 x 2880 native resolution, this iMac provides 14.7 million pixels, which is 7 times more than the standard HD display. The Retina 5K display also features a wider color gamut. Using a P3-based color gamut, the Retina 5K display provides a 25% larger color space than standard sRGB displays. And with more available colors, the images will appear more vivid and reveal greater detail.

The iMac houses a quad-core 6th-gen Skylake 4.0 GHz Intel Core i7 processor with 32GB of 1867 MHz DDR3 RAM. The iMac also has an AMD Radeon R9 M395X graphics card with 4GB of GDDR5 vRAM. For storage, the iMac has 1TB of flash storage.

Outfitted with 802.11ac Wi-Fi (backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n) for the speediest hook-ups to your home network, this iMac is also configured with Bluetooth 4.0, as well as an SDXC card slot for extra storage, four USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt 2 ports, and a Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) jack. It also has a Kensington lock slot for added security.

For ports, the iMac has dual Thunderbolt 2 ports (which also double as Mini DisplayPorts) and four USB 3.0 ports. You'll be able to connect with various compatible components. If you would rather go wireless with your peripherals, you can use Bluetooth 4.0 technology where compatible.

27" Retina 5K IPS Display
Whether your iMac is in your studio, living room, or kitchen, the display is the focal point. With a 5120 x 2880 resolution, the iMac with Retina 5K display features 14.7 million pixels, which allows for crisp, clear text and support for 4K photos and videos. The IPS panel allows for wider viewing angles so more people can enjoy the Retina 5K display without having to crowd around it.
6th-Gen Skylake Quad-Core Intel Core Performance
The iMac houses a quad-core 6th-gen Skylake Intel Core i7 processor. Its quad cores can reach a stock speed of 4.0 GHz. It can also be overclocked up to 4.2 GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. The 6th-gen Skylake Intel processor uses low voltage for better energy efficiency while still providing fast performance. Combined with 32GB of 1867 MHz DDR3 RAM, the iMac allows you to multitask quickly and efficiently.
Impossibly Thin
The iMac with Retina 5K display maintains its 5mm profile, which is up to 40 percent less volume than the 2011 iMac. Using an advanced welding method called friction-stir welding, Apple was able to join the front and the back of the iMac together directly.
802.11ac Wi-Fi & Bluetooth 4.0
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, the iMac takes desktop Wi-Fi speeds over the top. When it's connected to an 802.11ac base station - including AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule (both sold separately) - you can reach data rates of up to 1.3 Gbps. That's triple the previous 802.11n standard, which means you'll get up to three times faster Wi‑Fi. You also get double the channel bandwidth, with 80MHz-wide channels providing more room for more data to flow faster than ever. Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology is also built in, so you can connect accessories such as a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Thunderbolt 2
Expand the capabilities of your Mac. Connect high-performance peripherals. Transfer data at high speed. Even daisy-chain multiple devices. And the iMac with Retina 5K display has Thunderbolt 2, delivering twice the bandwidth - up to 20 Gbps - for fast data transfers. While the Thunderbolt 2 ports double as mini DisplayPorts, the iMac with Retina 5K display cannot be used as a standalone monitor like its predecessor. It can, however, be used simultaneously with an external display and can output up to a 5120 x 2880 resolution.
USB 3.0
With USB 3.0, you can transfer large files in seconds instead of minutes. Every iMac comes with four USB 3.0 ports - with speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 - and you can connect all your USB-compatible devices, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod or digital camera.

    Apple iMac reviews

27" iMac with Retina 5K Display (Late 2015) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love the computer and tech support I use the computer with my photography and lightroom. It's fast and the image quality is stunning. Moving from my old iMac to this one was effortless with Time Machine I have operating in the background. I did need tech support for another issue and delivered service beyond my expectations. Tech support is important because you never know what issues you will face in a fast evolving tech area. I am very happy with the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely Fast! I use this computer from photo editing with Lightroom and Photoshop. It processes large RAW files much faster than my 2009 iMAC. With Photoshop I use several third party filters and the I really notice the speed difference. Of course the 5K screen is amazing and I really notice the extra detail when zooming in to edit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent but choose the wired keyboard and mouse The machine is excellent, lightning fast when working with files and programs that are in the flash memory. And it's quiet (no moving parts). I dearly wish that I had chosen the wired keyboard and mouse: The Bluetooth mouse is driving me crazy, it's IMPOSSIBLE to use for delicate work. It is useless for working with photographs! It often sends my text files far off. It is way, way, way too sensitive to finger swipes and there is no way to modify that in Preferences. The Bluetooth keyboard works fine but its arrow group is tiny, and it has no Enter key. The absence of a numeric keypad is a pain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Purchased this computer to handle raw files from my 5dsr as my previous computer (mac book pro) was really starting to lag. This set up handles handles the big 50mpix files as easily as files from my point and shoots. Large stitched images and the like are handled with ease. Also the display is just stunning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely Lovely screen, lots of real estate. If you're careful to keep your working files in the flash memory it's amazingly fast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Amazing Computer I only owned a MacAir prior to this. This time I got the 27 iMac 5k Late 2015 (4 GHz Intel Core i7; 32 GB 1867 MHz DDR3; AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4096 MB; 1 TB Flash Drive). Yea, that just happened. What pushed me to buy this tBone with extra fat was editing 3D text in Photoshop. The MacAir crashed every time I tried any 3D editing. It was all I could do to keep me from smashing my computer. Well, I still use the darn thing but only for surfing the net now and on my travels. That is of course what it was for any ways. Also, I've had that mAir around the globe and back so I'm stuck with it and works well. Now the new one... if you've never owned one, it's like you are working with someone that can bench more, it's taller and better looking than you. Except, that you love this coworker and you don't want to trip him in the stairwell and never hear from him aaah...., back to the computer review. Yes, I'm back. It makes me feel like I have no limits when it comes to editing my photos. What else can I say. If you're a mac guy or female than you're going to be glued to your new monitor. I opted out of putting this on a desk. When I'm home, I'm on my sofa to watch TV. So I got a stand and an adopter so I can slide my iMac to me at eye level. The keyboard is next to me along with my 3way mouse (MX Master). Well, I'm tired of typing this review because I could write and write about how great this thing is..... Stop lol (I typed 'stop') lol Darn it, I want to say something about B&H. I got my Canon M3 here, my iMac of course and more. I was nervous about ordering because of how heavy and delicate this package is. It came double boxed with plenty of room to protect against accidental or careless delivery folks (you know who you are lol).
