Metabones MB_EF-FZ-BT1 overview

  • 1Description

The Canon EF to Sony FZ T CINE Smart Adapter from Metabones allows a Canon EF or EF-S mount lens to be mounted onto a Sony FZ-mount camera, including the F5, and F55. It features precision-machined, chromium-plated brass mounting surfaces on both the lens and camera sides. The adapter is designed to support electronic communication between the camera and lens, allowing image stabilization as well as camera-controlled aperture functions. It also features an assignable function button. If an attached lens is also capable of generating EXIF metadata, the adapter passes that information for the camera to record in its metadata stream.

The adapter features a locking EF mount, providing a sturdy, wiggle-free, solid attachment of the lens to your camera. Just forward of the locking ring is a large cine-style geared iris control ring, which allows you to control the iris of your lens manually if you wish. In addition to the communication to allow your lens to work with an FZ mount camera, the adapter also allows the lens information to be displayed in the camera's viewfinder. The adapter uses the camera to power the lens, and does not require an additional power source. Internal flocking reduces the chance of internal reflections, which can degrade your image.

This CINE Smart adapter allows you to mount a Canon EF mount lens on a camera with a Sony FZ mount, which includes the Sony F5, and F55. The adapter does not contain optics, which means that there is no aperture compensation or image adjustment when using full frame lenses on your camera.
The adapter passes electronic information between your camera and lenses, preserving the electronic function of your lens, except for autofocus. This allows you to utilize in-lens image stabilization (if supported by your lens), auto iris control, lens EXIF info recorded in the camera's metadata, and display of lens information in the camera's viewfinder.
The cine-style geared Iris ring on the adapter allows you to manually control the iris, if you wish, or use an optional lens motor to drive the iris.
The adapter features numerical iris markings that are clear and easy to read. As the adapter allows you to control the iris electronically both manually or by using the camera controls. When working with lenses that have variable apertures as their zoom length changes, the adapter can maintain the aperture you set on the lens as you zoom out (provided you are not shooting wide open).
The lens mount side of the adapter features a locking EF mount that is stronger than and less prone to wobble than the standard EF mount. Both mounting surfaces of the adapter are made from precision-machined brass that has been plated with chromium for a hard finish that is resistant to wear.

    Metabones MB_EF-FZ-BT1 reviews

Canon EF to Sony FZ T CINE Smart Adapter is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing I liked the price point and liked the reviews that I had seen from some of the press releases. However I was really disappointed when I got my hands on it. For some reason it only worked with my 16-35 lens and not my 24-70 or 70-200. It might have been user error because the markings to line up the lens to the adapter were very tough to see. Also, you have to hold the lens in place while turning the adapter to lock it on. Very tough to do while trying to line up the marks. I also had to power down the camera to make it work with the 16-35. If you tried to swap lenses with the camera powered, it wouldn't read the lens. Overall, I didn't think I could deal with these issue and am sending it back. The Optitek isn't perfect but it is much better for my type of work.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works but some lenses are very tight This unit is very well made but I found I had to go through two different units to find one that would accept all my Canon EF lenses. The flange has pretty much 0 tolerance when it comes to mounting a lens. VERY tight even on the second unit. Even Metabones tells you that on their website. Just hope you are not in a rush to change lenses. You could damage the adapter or a lens. I tried contacting Metabones directly three times but there customer service was non-existent.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Outstanding! This is the best investment I have made to couple my EF lenses to a FZ mount camera system. I will start off with the only negative thing I have to say. Though this is not a negative of the product it's self, rather a negative of electronic EF lenses when being used for video. Electronic EF mount lenses have an iris click. Both audible and visually. Because of this you will still see a slight jump in exposer change and if using the camera's onboard mic for audio, you will hear it on your footage. Other than that this adaptor is outstanding! Metabones applied great attention to detail! Strong build! Large and ergonomic! Has Perfectly dampened geared iris ring, that accurately shows the stop you are at with no delay. Relays lens info to viewfinder display. Puts iris controls back in your fingertips (like an ENG camera). No searching for the dial in an awkward place or consistently having to scroll a small dial to get to your desired exposer. Like some other cameras. Turned my camera and EF lens set into a great system that enables me to not have to fork up 30K on an PL mount ENG style lens that weighs a ton. Highly recommend, even for professional use. If you ask me, Sony should partner up with Metabones and make this a standard accessory to their FZ mount cameras.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not fit on a Sony PMW-F3 This looked like the ideal EF to FZ adapter but it turns out it will not fit on a Sony PMW-F3 body because the XLR input housing does not allow you to mount the adapter, very disappointed indeed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect This is a great adaptor. Good communication w/ my Canon lenses unlike a more expensive adaptor currently on the market. This is the adaptor to buy. Sturdy, well made, able to update on line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good adapter This is working well with y f5. It's great to be using my emount lenses with confidence. The adapter is very well built and using the iris in the traditional style is great. You can still see the lens change incrementally but it's easier to operate. Fit is tight, though sometimes you don't get the information in the viewfinder and have to reseat the lens or turn the camera off and on.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well, a little heavy. Works great. I used the Optitek FZ - EF mount before this. This model is heavier and extends from camera body a little more than Optitek. Love the iris wheel. Pins on lens and adapter have to match up to power lens which doesn't always happen. Works well with Canon L series 16-35, 24-70, 70-200 and 50mm lenses.
