ZEISS 28mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

Bright-eyed and wide-angled, the Canon EF mount ZEISS Otus 28mm f/1.4 is an optically-refined prime poised to deliver a high degree of resolution and clarity in nearly any shooting condition. Featuring an apochromatic design, and utilizing the Distagon concept to reduce distortion, this lens uses a series of eight anomalous partial dispersion glass elements and two aspherical elements to virtually eliminate chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the aperture range. A floating elements system is also used for consistent performance throughout the focusing range and a ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating suppresses lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity. Equaling the optical prowess of a Strigidae-inspired lens, the Otus 28mm f/1.4 is also characterized by a robust physical design for intuitive, exacting handling.

The wide-angle focal length pairs with the bright f/1.4 maximum aperture to suit working in broad variety of lighting conditions and is well-suited to a range of applications, including landscape, architecture, and interior photography. Accentuating the range of control, this manual focus lens is complemented by haptic design elements, including a 120° rotational focus throw, rubberized focus ring, and an all-metal lens barrel with high-visibility yellow scale markings.

Prime wide-angle 28mm f/1.4 lens is designed for full-frame format Canon EF DSLRs, and can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 44.8mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited to photographing in difficult lighting conditions and also affords greater control over focus placement when using selective focus techniques.
Two aspherical elements help to suppress spherical aberrations for greater clarity and consistent illumination and sharpness from edge to edge, regardless of the aperture setting in use.
An apochromatic design makes use of eight anomalous partial dispersion glass elements to nearly eliminate chromatic aberrations in order to reduce color fringing and color artifacts in front of and behind the plane of focus.
Employing a Distagon optical concept, this lens delivers virtually distortion-free performance that pairs well with the broad angle of view.
A floating element design places variable air gaps between select lens groups to realize consistent performance throughout the focusing range, from 11.8' to infinity.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coatings have been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections in order to provide greater image clarity, contrast, and color fidelity.
Manual focus design is accentuated by a rubberized focusing ring, 120° focus ring rotational angle, an inset dial window, and bright, high-visibility yellow depth of field and distance scale markings.
An internal focusing mechanism maintains the overall lens length and, benefitting the use of circular polarizers and graduated neutral density filters, the front filter thread does not rotate during use.
The sophisticated optical system is housed within an all-metal lens barrel, which is built with the narrowest of design tolerances for refined precision and durability.
This ZE-series lens supports Canon DSLRs' electronic interface for camera-based control over exposure settings and in-camera focus confirmation.

    ZEISS 28mm f/1.4 reviews

Otus 28mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Super-Lens deserves a 5-star 5-stars just because if you actually willing to pay the price then you can't remove a star for that high price. You know it's large (but fits nicely in your hand), rather heavy (but very well balanced), and very expensive (worth the money) ... if you're still ready to buy it then be ready for the best possible modern lens ever made, period. Everything is sharper where focused, every bokeh is dreamy, every drop of sweat or condensation is evident on every focused picture. Only one exception, if you can't stand Manual Focus then stop right there and get a canon. Otherwise, QUIT hesitating, it IS worth every penny ! Have fun now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best DSLR wide angle lens I've been using this lens for nighttime landscape photography for a few weeks now, and the image quality is superb. The lens is sharp all the way into the corners, even wide open. Important for starry skies, coma is is minimal, provided the lens has been focused accurately. There is very little lens flare; point light sources such as street lamps in night scenes rarely create ghost images. On the negative side, this lens is large enough to attract unwanted attention when you take it out, and it is very heavy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best Wide Angle Available for Canon I am using this primarily for landscape and full body portraits and the lens has consistently excellent output provided you can nail focus, even on a 50-megapixel Canon 5Ds R. At f/1.4, it is visibly sharper than the recently released 35L II, and significantly sharper than the 24L II. By f/2.8 it is sharp across the entire frame of the 5Ds R, which few other lenses can match. The lens also has virtually zero lateral CA wide open, though there is a bit of LoCA in out of focus areas. The manual focusing ring is very smooth and pleasant to use, as with all the other Otus lenses. Bokeh rendering is nice and pleasant, though the ability to splice a picture up into planes present in the other Otuses is much less visible due to the focal length. The only downsides to this lens are the price, weight and the tendency to flare somewhat when the sun is just outside the frame in particular locations.
