Interfit S1 overview

  • 1Description

With the introduction of the S1 500Ws HSS TTL Battery-Powered Monolight, Interfit joins the small group of manufacturers producing TTL monolights. The flash head is powered by an internal, removable 4500mAh lithium-ion battery that fits inside the head's housing. It has a 350 full-power flash capacity and can also run on AC while your battery is charging. It's controllable wirelessly at distances up to 328'.

The S1 has 3 shooting modes: Wireless TTL for Canon, Nikon, or Sony; Manual Mode; and High-Speed Sync. Wireless requires purchase of a Nikon, Canon or Sony dedicated transmitter, but once that's done, you can basically treat these studio strobe units as you would your on-camera flash. In TTL, the camera's flash technology takes stock of the scene and automatically adjusts the power from 1.9 to 500Ws across a 9-stop range. If you want to fine tune your exposure, there's +/- 3 stops exposure compensation adjustable in 1/3 stops.

Traditional manual mode is available for those who want complete control. Manual mode is also how you access HSS (High-Speed Sync). This mode uses the flash's top 3 power levels (from 125 to 500Ws) to allow you to access sync speeds as short as 1/8000. HSS presents a new world of exposure possibilities whether you're trying to overpower the sun, control the background's brightness, or use wider apertures.

The S1 recycles to full power in 3 seconds and a fraction of that time at reduced power levels. Thanks to the incorporation of IGBT technology, the flash can also reach flash durations as short as 1/11,000 sec for the ultimate in stop-action while still maintaining a steady 5700K color temperature.

The S1 ships as a complete system including a 350-shot Li-ion battery with a charger that powers it up in about 3 hours. Since the S1 is AC/DC, it can also be plugged into a wall outlet for use regardless of its voltage while the battery is charging. The S1 also includes a 7" Bowens S-Type reflector, an AD adapter and a mini USB cable.

Compatibility and Firmware Updates
In order to ensure maximum compatibility with your system, Interfit offers firmware updates for download on their website. These updates can be easily installed by the user by connecting the monolight to their computer over USB.
Complete Package
500Ws monolight with High-Speed Sync, TTL for Canon and Nikon, IGBT technology, lithium-ion battery, and multi-voltage AC power pack in one complete package
S1 TTL Remote
The S1's TTL remotes give the users direct control over any S1 light in any shooting mode from the camera position. This camera-mounted transmitter is available for both Canon, Nikon and Sony cameras. Having three individual groups gives users the freedom to control lights individually to create dynamic lighting ratios with a working range of up to 300' (100 m)
Power Supply
Each Interfit S1 comes standard with both battery and AC-power sources. The interchangeable 4500mAh Li-ion battery provides up to 350 full power flashes in Manual and TTL modes and over 400 full-power flashes in High-Speed Sync mode. This wire-free power source gives photographers the freedom and mobility to venture out from the studio and rapidly set up and reposition lights on location. For traditional studio work, the S1 also ships with an AC power pack (adapter). This multi-voltage (100-240V) adapter can be used anywhere in the world and lets photographers continue to shoot while their battery is charging
Shooting Modes
The S1 has three different shooting modes, each to serve a different purpose and shooting style. Interfit's S1 Remote for Canon, Nikon or Sony enables photographers to take advantage of their camera's TTL system just like they would with a speedlight. This automated light output uses the S1's entire 9-stop power range (500W - 1.9Ws), is automatically calculated in 1/10th stop increments, and allows for +/- 3 stops of exposure compensation
Manual Mode and High-Speed Sync
For those that prefer to have complete control of their light and have time for fine-tuned adjustments, the S1 can be used in the traditional manual mode. Manual shooting mode also utilizes the entire 9-stop power range, controllable in 1/10th stop increments. While in manual mode, users can access the S1's High Speed Sync mode, reaching shutter speeds up to 1/8000th of a second. High-Speed Sync mode utilizes the top 3 stops in the power range (500 - 125Ws) and is manually adjustable in 1/3-stop increments
IGBT
Utilizing IGBT technology, the S1 is able to offer short flash durations while maintaining color accuracy throughout the power range. Flash duration ranges from 1/500 at full power, to 1/11,000 at minimum power. While shortening the flash duration, Interfit was also able to improve color accuracy, giving the S1 a consistent 5700K (+/-100K) color temperature throughout the entire power range

    Interfit S1 reviews

    S1 500Ws HSS TTL Battery-Powered Monolight is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 69.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Bang for Buck + The frosted glass dome realy softens direct and indirect light and fills out softboxes nicely. No need to buy it as a separate accessory for $$$. + The battery is quite long-lasting. For some reason, I get more shots with HSS: about 400 vs the manufacturer spec of 350. + HSS is great with shooting at f/1.4 wide open; no need for ND filters anymore! + I like that I can switch to using the light on mains with the AC adapter. + Remote power adjustment is great for booming the light on a c-stand. + Interface is simple and easy to understand: I started shooting without having to read the manual. - Full power recycle time could be better, but it's still better than my Godox AD360's at full power in HSS.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light Very happy with this light. I was legging around an alien bee and vagabond battery, so to have everything in one nice little package with no wires is amazing! I purchased a heavy duty stand for this- because I was worried about it falling over- and I bought the damage warranty- haha! I was able to carry thing by myself at a recent portrait session- and it will be even better on a wedding day when my assistant carries it : ) I tend to shoot manual flash, so trying to get used to TTL- but the capabilities of this thing are amazing!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth the money This was the second one of these that I have bought. This was my seventh Interfit light, three of witch are battery operated. Their lights are built very tough and four of mine are over ten years old. The only reason I didn't give it a five star is because they are not true 500 WS lights. I tested these side beside with my 300 WS battery light with the same beauty dish and the output was the same. I would like a little more power when trying to over power the sun in HSS. The Interfit trigger has worked great and so far I have had no misfires. Well worth the money especially since the second light was on sell for $599 with the trigger included.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from YES! Oh man, this thing is AWESOME! I do a lot of senior portraits on location, so I had been looking for a powerful and portable light. A friend told me to go see interfit at the imaging show. The guys at the booth let me test it out and I was sold! Biggest selling point for me was that it could be used on location with the battery AND in the studio with the wall plug! Having to get used to only one system for both situations is a huge relief. Then add in the highspeed sync (very cool!) and the TTL (which I don't really use), and you get the perfect light! If I had one complaint, it would be that the modeling lamp isn't very bright. But I don't really use it that often so I'm not that concerned. All in all, I'm very pleased with this light! I was skeptical at first, but seeing it perform and getting to use it in person was enough to convince me. Oh... and it's half the price of the profoto!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes my job a lot easier! I'm an architectural photographer and I've been waiting for an alternative to the B1's. Not having to move power cables and find plugs when moving from room to room is great and saves me time, and having that much power is a must! Haven't used it for portraits yet but I'm sure they work fine now that I've gotten to work with them. Batts last quite a while!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than the Profoto b1 I rented the Profoto b1 and wasnt all that impressed. The S1 is half the price you can plug it into a wall. You can sync with pocket wizards if you need to. I dont like how and where the umbrella mount is. However the battery is mounted so its not on the side like the profoto. They both miss fire every now and again and arent perfect. This unit can clearly do the job.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Maybe I Got a Lemon I used this light twice and then went to take it out for the biggest shoot I've ever done and it wouldn't work on AC or DC. Had it sent in for servicing and they replaced the whole mother board at no cost. I love the TTL, 500ws, and high speed sync capabilities for the price but my faith is a bit shaky in the light since it had very little use before crapping out. Happy to report customer service was by and large good through working with getting the light serviced. Meanwhile, my Paul Buff stuff (which got me through my big job) hasn't had one hiccup in over 10 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid lights I researched lights for a long time and my budget was a bit over $2k. So it was two of these lights or one Profoto.I waited to purchase these hoping I would find some reviews but pulled the tigger and bought direct from Interfit when they had a sale. Then after they shipped I saw the review on the Phoblographer.com and thought I might be sending them back. Thankfully any issues with the strobes that were experienced on that review, I did not have. They performed great. A few misfires but probably less than 10 in 2000 frames. I was also really happy with the battery life. I used the strobes at 125ws worrying I would run out of DC power but in the end I still had half a battery. The one issue I did experience mentioned on the phobloggrapher was the batteries in the transmitter draining even though it was off. Hopefully a firmware update is coming soon to fix that. As of now the only thing I would change is a faster recycle time at full power. Recycle at 125ws was around 1.5 seconds or better, which is great for my purposes but would like the faster recycle at full power if I need it.
