    Marantz M-CR611 Reviews

M-CR611 120W Network CD Receiver is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great sound, lacks network reliability On paper, this had everything I wanted. App control that wakes up the amp and allows me to use it as a DLNA player so I can stream audio from my Synology NAS. Airplay for times when I want my phone to act as a player. AM/FM so I can listen over the air. Internet radio along with Pandora and Spotify options. Two room audio. IR remote so I can quickly adjust volume w/o needing the App. It is a bit more compact for a small space. It also came with a CD player which I did not need, but hey, now it does everything. I was excited to unbox this thing and start to play. First, what works well: - If you are going to primarily use the IR remote or the controls on the front panel, you will probably love this thing. The IR and front panel are easy to use and does what you expect. The only downside is that the menus get long if you are navigating down through the list of internet stations or playing from your music servier. I don't really fault that because it seems unavoidable. On the plus side, it has a cool Favorites feature that let's you add shortcuts to an internet or Pandora station. - The sound is quite good. I am not someone with high end speakers, nor do I have that discerning of an ear, but overall, it gave me the kind of audio control I was looking for to tune to my living room. I thought is was clean and strong enough for my modest set up. The bad: - The app sucks. I read reviews for every major AV app control and couldn't find one that people liked so Marantz is not alone. Its obvious that these company's are audio first, and computer second. WIth the mash up of these two technologies, they really don't perform like you expect. If I am paying this much for something, I have expectations of a seamless app experience. It is cerainly not. The app lags behind the amp. It does not always see the receiver when it is in stand by mode. It freezes periodically. I tried both the iOS and Android app and they both suffered from the same inconsistencies. This is such a dissapointment. - Another small annoyance is that in some modes the IR control is disabled. When I was selecting it as a player to stream from the NAS, the IR control will not work. I found this annoying because I like the option of controling volume or pausing playback w/o always having to use the app. - The receiver does not stay alive on the network consistenly and I often had to hard power down and back up for it to get back on the network. To prevent this, I wrote a script for my NAS to ping the receiver every 20 minutes. This worked for a while but then that even started to fail. Again, for a network receiver, this is a critical miss. For it to disconnect is just not acceptable given how it is intended to be used. After I spent hours pouring over wireshark logs and researching ways to send IP commands to the receiver to keep it alive, my wife asked me, what are you doing?. I realized that for the $$ I paid for this, this seemed like a ridiculous level of effort to get it to work. So I returned it. I was super bummed because it did EVERYTHING that I wanted it to do, it just didn't do it at a consistent or performant level. Argh! So frustrating. So I went back to my old set up, Airport Express and first gen Apple TV hooked up to my amp. Simple and it works everytime. Guess I just need to wait for this to improve before I try again.
