Canon PRO-1000 Overview

By B&H Photo's
Marked with the distinctive red line normally found on Canon's professional lenses, the imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 offers large-format photo prints up to 17" wide in up to 2400 x 1200 dpi resolution. This professional photographic inkjet printer can print borderless at up to 17 x 22" as well as work with thick 27.6 mil fine art media.

The PRO-1000 features Canon's outstanding FINE printing technology with a large print head. This is leveraged with an 11-color LUCIA PRO pigment-based ink set and a Chroma Optimizer cartridge to create prints with fine detail and a wide, accurate color gamut. The Chroma Optimizer cartridge improves color consistency on coated papers and reduces the difference in ink droplet height to ensure a smooth ink layer and less metamerism.

Mobile Ready
Connectivity is a highlight of the imagePROGRAF PRO-1000, with USB 2.0, Ethernet, and built-in Wi-Fi options available. Wireless printing furthers the printer's capabilities by adding compatibility with Canon's PRINT App, PIXMA Cloud Link, and PictBridge.
The iOS/Android PRINT App allows users to wirelessly transfer images and files for print from a mobile device, as well as remotely monitor ink levels and printer status. PIXMA Cloud Link provides access to Google Cloud Print for printing documents directly from cloud-based servers.

As a wireless PictBridge enabled printer, the PRO-1000 lets you link a PictBridge compliant device such as a compatible digital camera or smartphone to the printer through wireless LAN, and print captured images directly without using a computer.

FINE Print Head
The imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 uses Canon's FINE printing technology with a 50% larger print head than in previous offerings. FINE (Full-Photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) works with 1,536 nozzles for each color to produce impressively detailed prints on a variety of fine-art papers with deep blacks and accurate quality colors.
Anti-Clogging
The FINE print head institutes a tubular ink delivery system. This generates faster print speeds and reduces the possibility of clogging. Additionally, ink ejection conditions are precisely checked with sensors, and if a clog is detected, another nozzle automatically provides backup, preventing wasted prints due to clogging and reducing the frequency of nozzle cleaning.
LUCIA PRO Inks
A set of 12 individual ink cartridges consists of 11 standard inks and a Chroma Optimizer cartridge that improves color consistency on coated papers and reduces the difference in ink droplet height to ensure a smooth ink layer and less metamerism. The 11 standard inks include four monochrome inks that reduce bronzing, increase black density, and expand dynamic range in the shadows for excellent grayscale prints.
Fast Image Processing Engine
Equipped with the L-COA PRO Image Processing Engine, the PRO-1000 can quickly and accurately determine printing paths and patterns in order to work as quickly and efficiently as possible. This enables bordered 17 x 22" photos to be created in just 4 minutes 10 seconds while a two-way vacuum feeder keeps media flat and quickly and accurately feeds the media.
Other Features
  • A 3.0" color LCD is available on the front of the unit for easily viewing settings and making adjustments
  • Minimum droplet size of 4pl for finely detailed imagery
  • 1GB of standard memory for handling large files with ease
  • Rated EPEAT Silver, ENERGY STAR qualified, and RoHS Directive Certified to guarantee efficient power consumption
  • Print Studio Pro v2.0 is plug-in for Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom with 16-bit processing will help you easily send high quality large-format files to the printer for making vivid, detailed photographic prints
  • Media Configuration Tool enables customization of the media settings in both the driver and printer and can make adjustments such as print head height and vacuum strength
  • Accounting Manager will help users track use and cost of consumables such as ink and media in order to determine print costs, and it can manage a number of users in a multi-unit environment
  • Device Management Console can manage multiple PRO-1000 printer and monitor activity such as error messages and printer information

Canon PRO-1000 Reviews

Quality printer, hands down.

My old Epson 3800 finally died the death of the black ink switch. Knowing this was coming, I had been researching a replacement for months. Looking at the current offering of a 17 printer from Epson, I was unimpressed with reported flimsy plastic feed and output trays. More importantly, there were too many reports of paper feed issues to seriously consider another Epson. In contrast, the Canon won me over. The delivery was prompt and in excellent condition. Setup was straight forward and simply easy.Performing the head alignment and color calibration was easily performed. My first color calibration print that I use was simply perfect. The next day was spent building custom profiles for some of my special papers, loading those through the media installer. In the past weeks, I have printed normal workflow images that include vibrant fall color shots. Seriously, the output from this printer is stunning! Importantly, the printer build quality is solid. Seeing and feeling conveys this to be a truly professional printer. Paper feed is flawlessly spot-on and the vacuum feed assist is impressive. The machine operates so quietly that at times I have to look up to see that it's working. I am grateful for the months I spent researching a replacement, and for the truly solid professional printer I found in the Canon Pro 1000.

Canon Pro-1000 Printer - 7 Year Review!

Purchased the printer back in 2015 from B&H. Short version... buy it and don't look back. You won't regret it. It creates amazing prints up to 17 x 22. Pro-1000 advantages: - Prints are crisp and vivid, with colors as good or better than what I get from outside printing companies. - The ability to print 17 x 22 is amazing. Once you start printing large you will never go back. All the details and clarity just pop. - Easy care and Self maintenance. The Pro-1000 goes through cleaning cycles when needed resulting in perfect prints every time. - Comes with a full set of ink (not starter kits), which is almost a $700 value. - Quiet and fast - After 7 years the prints look as good as the day I bought it! Challenges: - Everything about high quality photography is expensive. Cameras, lens, etc. And this printer is no exception. It is expensive. The ink is expensive. Printing on large paper is expensive, and the MC-20 Maintenance Cartridge is another expense. But the prints are amazing - Like other high end printers, it likes to be used often. If it sits for long periods of time it will go into a cleaning mode, cycling ink through the printer into the MC-20. - It likes Canon paper and Canon drivers. I have not found support for Epson papers. They make work, but I haven't found reliable drivers to use them. Bottom line. Buy it. You will be amazed. I use to send my photos out to be printed but having a high quality printer at home is a game changer. I print more and I print larger.

Awesome Printer

I finally made the decision to make this purchase. So glad I did. This thing is a beast. Its a massive printer. Its heavy. It takes up space. However, It does an incredible job. I paired it with paper from Red River. This puts out so amazing pictures. The print time is relatively quick, even for the 17x22 sizes. I wish i had bought this a couple years ago. It is absolutely worth every penny. You can not go wrong buying this. It is a game changer.

VERY GOOD PHOTO PRINTER FOR FUSSY PHOTOGRPAHERS BUT NOT SPEEDY.

i came from a love hate relationship with my old printer from another brand. It gave great prints in the 16"x20" and 11"x14" sizes I print for exhibition and sale. But it had issues with clogging print head even with frequent use....and worse of all when the print head goes bad it is a door stop since you can't get replacement heads. I tried to get a new printer after the old one died in the middle of the Pandemic and turned out no one was getting them due to chip shortage. I had to revert to a old reliable cheapy that only printed 8 1/2"x11" max....or go to a print shop. I really needed to regain control of the printing quality of my prints so finally decided to get the PRO-1000. I was worried that it might have some issues but turns out it works perfectly. Of course the first ink tanks fill up the feed tubes and mechanism so once done you have about 35% fill left for all tanks. So plan on getting a second set of inks before long. That being said the amount of ink it does use per print is minimal so the reports of it drinking ink is not true The other trick is to turn OFF the automatic shut down to avoid it going through a cleaning routine frequently and wasting ink. What I do is print a tiny test pattern or print every few days when I won't be doing regular printing...this also keeps the printer from going through needless cleaning cycles. Compared to my old printer the prints may be a tiny bit better but not night and day difference. While the Canon papers are fine, i already had some rolls of my favorite luster type paper from another supplier. i found that it was easy to cut 16"x20" sheets from that roll and feed them through the rear manual feed. Just take the time to make sure they are fed in and kept aligned. I have had no problem with jamming, skewed printing, roller marks on paper, etc. I like the vacuum feed which seems to do a good job of feeding the paper and keeping it flat. I considered the larger printer that can use roll paper but my work load wouldn't support the cost. It is faster printing (twice as fast) than my old printer but still i wouldn't recommend it if you need a high output fast machine. I am an astro photographer as well as a photographer with many years in commercial, wedding, product, auto racing, and art photography but now mostly retired other than the astrophotos. The printer gives beautiful, accurate color and fine detail in my work so have no problem recommending it for others. I left off the last star in my rating since I don't yet know how reliable it will be or if it will require needless fussing to keep it working, but thus far it sees to be a more well thought out and engineered machine than my old printer. It is a good match for those who value a fine ultra high quality print at the expense of really fast high volume output. Figure less than a 5 minute print time for a 16"x20" print.

I was wondering if there was really going to be a huge difference between the canon pro 10 and the pro 1000, and there certainly is.

I have been printing for over 2 decades. I own a land surveying company where we have a HP Plotter (36) T2500. The canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 is by far a superior printer in image quality. The time it takes to print a photograph is well worth the wait. I did my research before I bought this printer, and I have been pleasantly surprised at the quality, not only in the photographs, but the build quality as well.

My old printer, a Canon Pro-100, was getting to be about 12 years old, and I figured it was time to replace it. For the entire time I had the Pro-100 I had problem-free printing, not even a single paper jam, and I print a lot. So I jumped in, and bought this printer, got a sample pack of my favorite papers and started printing. Getting the printer set up and downloading the ICC profiles and the AM1X config files took the better part of a day. But once I got the hang of it, it was not hard. I then set off to print and compare the photos to the same size photos from the Pro-100. The prints are amazing, and ithey are sharper and show fine detail better then my old printer. The 5 extra colors and the chroma optimizer really make a big difference in the final print.

Because of its weight it will most likely be very expensive. It's packed very well but an overseas shipment might be rougher than domestic. Check with Canon for vendors closer to the delivery point.

Can I also use this printer to print text documents?
Asked by: Curtis
Yes, you can print text documents on normal bond or copy paper, though the ink is expensive enough that if you're going to be doing a lot of that, you'd be better off having a small dedicated document printer, and use this printer for only photos. A full ink set is over $700, it's not cheap to operate.

Both the Epson P900 and Canon Pro1000 have a matte black and photo black as well as 2 shades of grey. The 2 grey shades are very similar.
