K-Tek KSTGS overview

  • 1Description

The Stingray Small Audio Mixer Recorder Bag from K-Tek is designed to work with the Sound Devices 663 and Zaxcom Maxx mixer recorders, and other similar-sized equipment. Like the other bags in this series, the Stingray Small offers a dual full-vertical frame that allows the bag to stand on its own, protecting equipment while providing full access to the gear, connectors, and media, with its large bottom trap door and zippered side access panels.

Over-sized side pockets offer plenty of room to store NP batteries, while hook-and-loop access allows cabling from side pockets into the main compartment. A separate front compartment can be expanded or closed tight, and is protected by a rigid front panel. Various cable pass-through locations and smart storage points allow for versatility when using various equipment choices and recording environments. Web loops, Molle straps, and D-rings provide plenty of rigging points for additional accessories, and allow the Stingray audio bag to be connected by harnesses and waist-belts. The Stingray Small ships with two wireless pouches, a shoulder strap, a clear shield, and stealth cover.

    K-Tek KSTGS reviews

Stingray Small Audio Mixer Recorder Bag is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A mature offering from K-Tek. I have been limping my 633 along in a Petrol 607 for a good while now, bending antennas and feeling cramped. K-Tek, after what's apparently a LOT of thought and user feedback, have come up with a solid offering for small mixer/recorder setups. My initial impression was that it was a tad taller than necessary, but not egregiously. There's lots of storage opportunities that will negate me always needing a fanny pack. My 633 and SR receivers all fit snugly, along with my BDS and NP-1. I'm looking forward to coming up with ways to leverage all the options they included. My existing Petrol harness works fine with it, but I'm intrigued now by the K-Tek one. This is a solid bag that I hope to utilize for a great while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from They thought of everything! I bought the bag for my Zoom F4 with the intention of upgrading to a 633 or Maxx in the future. As a note, this bag is NOT a perfect fit for a Zoom, which is fine because K-Tek makes a Junior Stingray specifically for smaller mixers like the Zoom. However, it took me all of 10 minutes to find out a way to make it fit very securely (zipties, velcro straps, and foam inserts). Every moment you use this bag, you feel taken care of. K-Tek constructed everything to be intuitive and extremely fast. Cable management, zippers, extra pockets, it's all there. The door on the bottom is a joy to use. Honestly this bag makes my job a lot more fun and less stressful every day.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Top notch design, construction, and customer support This bag is often compared to the Orca OR-30 bag and the greater depth of this bag (2 inches more) is often the deciding point in favor of the Stingray Small bag. An alternative bag to consider is the Orca OR-32 which has the same 9 depth as the Stingray but is nearly 4 inches longer and so better protects mic cable connectors coming out the sides of the SD 633 recorder/mixer. The zippered access to both sides is great and I much prefer it to Velcro closures that make more noise and collect debris. There is a single middle strap to adjust the height of the recorder in the bag and in this aspect the Orca approach is much better. The K-Tek bag has an exterior bottomless pocket area for clipping on wireless mic receivers whereas with the Orca bags this is an enclosed pocket that can be zippered shut for protection from the elements. This becomes a personal choice or preference based on how many wireless lav's one is going to be using at a time. I had a problem with a defective bag from K-Tek and the responded very quickly and did everything possible to resolve the matter for me as quickly as possible. K-Tek definitely is targeting the pro user of their products and has a different attitude than companies that sell to consumers and the general public and only want to minimize their customer support costs (one sees this with companies that only provide a online form and where it can take days to get a response and even longer to get a problem actually resolved).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from K-Tek's Bag Of Tricks After purchasing a new Sound Devices 633 mixer/recorder the next biggest decision was selecting what bag was going to house it. Between my existing Petrol Deca 602 I narrowed the list down to the Orca OR-30 and the K-Tek Stingray (Small). I decided to keep my Sound Devices 302/702 in my Petrol bag. I was leaning heavily towards the Orca bag for its superior build quality and having about 2 inches less height. But the Stingray bag won out for a few reasons. It has easier overall access from the sides and bottom, slightly lighter weight, and shifting the weight from the front to the sides for better balance and weight distribution. I had also chosen to go with the K-Tek Stingray Harness, which as a system (bag and harness) works well together. But one of the most appreciated features is that the carrying handles recess inside the bag. That was one of the design flaws of the Petrol bag that really annoyed me was having the straps in the way. I realized at the last second before ordering the Stingray bag that while standard XLR and TA3 connectors can be used with it, they will extend into the side pocket areas, reducing some of the usable storage space (depending on what you pack inside the side pockets). I had Low Profile cables custom made for all my inputs and outputs (the Low Profile cables I had made reduced weight by 40% over standard XLR and TA3 cables). This provides me with full capacity of storage in the side pockets. I appreciate having the extra 2 inches of height as it makes it easier to route cables and hook up additional cables to the short jumpers that live inside the bag. The K-Tek KCH2 Hanger cables are awesome. No more velcro straps! These quick release cable hangers are super easy to use and secure. You can mount them (and other accessories on the Molle straps and web loops on the front of the bag. Overall, K-Tek has done their homework and listened attentively to the feedback of pro sound men. This is a great bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent bag, but i wish if the height was lower. I am using with SD633, and i don't need that much height but otherwise its great and has a lot of space and well built.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for SD 633 I wish I could give this bag 6 stars. It's PERFECT for my newly-purchased SD 633. I tried both the Orca OR-30 and this. While the ORCA bag was well-made and had some nice features, it fit the 633 rather poorly. The small Stingray, on the other hand, fit it perfectly. The bottom strap holding it at the right height, the side openings to give full access to both sides of the devices (this was a major issues with the ORCA - I couldn't fully open the media door when the device was in the bag). Enough room on the bottom to actually attach L-series batteries, if desired. Plus, all the little features showing that this is made by audio professional for audio professionals. - Retractable handles are stiff and easy to use, making them super convenient to just slide out of the way. - Adjustable D-rings for the strap to allow me to dial-in the fit. - Molle attachment points to add lots of accessories. - PLENTY of room inside the bag for battery (even a little strap at the bottom of the bag to secure it) and wireless receivers. - Side pockets are nice and organized. If I were to find one complaint, it would be that the sides are indeed a bit tight for traditional XLR cables plugging into the inputs. It works fine, but is a bit tight. Definitely ordering a few low-profile XLR cables to make it even better. If you own a SD633 and are looking for a bag, look no further. Get this one right now. Own something other than a 633? Strongly consider Stingray - these bags are well thought out and built with a high quality.
