SLR Magic Self-Locking Variable ND Filter (52mm, 1.3 to 6-Stop)
Key Features
  • Variable 0.4 to 1.8 Optical Density
  • Multicoated Optical Glass Construction
  • Darkens Entire Image
  • Greater Control Over Exposure Settings
This 52mm SLR Magic Self-Locking Variable ND Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter that is designed to mount onto lenses with 52mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 1.3 to 6 stops. The 0.4 to 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is visually demarcated with numbers representing different density values and includes a rotation lever to further enable fast and precise positioning of the front ring. Once the front ring is rotated into a position that corresponds to the desired amount of density, the filter's rear ring can then be turned to lock the front ring into place, helping to ensure consistent exposures.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity. It is multi-coated to prevent internal ghosting as well as reflections.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density scene to scene.
0.4 to 1.8 neutral density filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a reduction of 1.3 to 6 stops, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Offers increased flexibility to use specific ISO settings or ISO films under bright ambient light.
Provides increased exposure flexibility while using cinema or video cameras within a designated film frame rate.
Multi-coated, optical glass for clarity and color fidelity as well as the prevention of internal ghosting and reflections.
Side lever allows the filter glass to be easily rotated.
Integrated exposure locking ring prevents accidental rotation of filter glass and changes to corresponding density values.
Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

SLR Magic SLR-VND II Reviews

Fine but disapointed

This filter works nicely at the lower end but when you dial it up there is serious uneven vignetting. Also the little num you are supposed to use to rotate the filter was not on when I opened up the box- I thought it didn’t exhist but I did find it and attached it. It’s a pretty junky plastic nub. The build of the rest of the filter is nice and strong.

Wish the handle out was smaller.

This is really a good ND and the fact that it has limited range is excellent. I only wish the handle was a little shorter. Putting this 80mm on a lens and then putting it inside the bag can sometimes get snagged when removing it. My filter broke in half when I tried to pull my 50mm F1.2 with this thing on it out of my bag. I had to play around with it for a while to put it back together. This should be raised but not this far out.

Will this variable ND filter allow mounting of a clamp-on matte box?
Asked by: Tyler
It may not as the mechanism to change the ND filter's strength would be interfered with if a clamp-on matte box was attached. It would not be recommended with this filter.

question

is the side lever/handle removable ( screw on) ?
Asked by: umon k.
The lever is totally removable. Mine came off after the 2nd use and by the 4th use, the lever couldn't be screwed back on as the thread has been stripped. I did not use a lot of force in screwing in the lever but it still got stripped. That's a testament to the built-quality of this product. Please consider other brands for your VND.

question

2 questions. 1: lter also be used as a CPL as you can adjust the angle of the filtration. 2: Does this filter have threads on the front of the filter? Answers appreciated.
Asked by: Rick
While both neutral density and circular polarizer filters use polarizing foils, the main purpose of this variable ND filter is to reduce the exposure overall, rather than reducing reflections, reducing glare and saturating colors as a circular polarizer would. As for the threads in front, those would measure 86mm.

You cannot. The front is wider. It accepts 86mm filters or 86mm lens caps in the front.

Asked by: WISNER
The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Canon EF has a 72mm filter thread, so the SLR Magic 77mm Self-Locking Variable Neutral Density 0.4 to 1.8 Filter (1.3 to 6 Stops) won't fit without a step-down ring like this one: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1026570-REG/sensei_surp_7277_pro_72_77mm_brass_step_up.html
